A healthy drink to manage High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)

I got to know of this drink by my mom who was diagnosed with High Blood Pressure (hypertension) a little over a year ago. She takes her medications as prescribed by her doctor and mostly watches her Indian diet. And yet, there would be days she had to be rushed to the hospital for higher than her already high blood pressure. Until one day, while in conversation with an extended family member she heard of this magical drink that could manage and control blood pressure.

As all Indians probably already know, we jump at a home remedy to treat almost anything, or at least very skeptically we give it a shot. My mom is no different and she churned this juice the very next day. She had this juice daily for a little less than 2 weeks whilst still taking her Blood Pressure tablet as prescribed by her doctor every morning. And then without giving it much thought, decided to take it again the next month for a week and continue for only one week every month. But before the end of the month, she complained of feeling very low and drowsy, and that is when we decided to check her Blood Pressure at home. It was on the lower side this time.

She scheduled an online appointment with her doctor, who now has asked her to stop taking the Blood Pressure tablets. Well, for now that is. She has an appointment with the doctor in a couple of months to make sure the Blood Pressure remains within the normal or permissible range.

My mom now makes this juice once a week not just for herself but for anyone who needs a refreshing juice. I have made a mental note to make this for myself once a month.

Here is the recipe:

Ingredients

A fistful of fresh Mint leaves
Juice of a quarter lemon
½ table spoon of Jaggery powder. You could try omitting this or try even use the liquid jaggery if you can get it.
Water – 1 cup

***Method: ***

Blend all the ingredients in a mixer / juicer. Strain and drink. Dilute if required.

With the above measurements, 3 of us had this drink in relatively small portions. You don’t need to consume too much of it. Just a small gulp or two will do.

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor. I am only sharing a home remedy that has worked for my mother. Always check with your doctor before you try anything or let your doctor know about any alternative medicine / diet / therapy you are willing to try.

You will be surprised at how we can change many things by adding a couple of ingredients in our cooking or making a few lifestyle adjustments.

Thank you for reading.
See you in my next post.

I know I have been missing in action for a long time now. But I was traveling and was back home with my family. I hope to continue posting recipes 3 days a week going forward.
