Navigating Batumi's Streets

I usually stop by Batumi when I visit the Black Sea coast almost every year. My recent visit to Batumi last week was a little different from the others. I can say that it was more calm and enjoyable. The weather was clear for a few days even we were in January. Maybe the effect of fresh air made my visit pleasant.

There was not much density at the border gates compared to previous years. Many of the visitors from Turkey were visiting to Batumi to shopping for technological products. At least that's how I understood it. People were looking for other alternatives to find various products at affordable prices with the depreciation of the Turkish lira. Batumi is one of the favored locations because it is close to Turkey and provides visa-free travel freedom. The real estate sector in Batumi is quite dynamic in these days. New residences are being built on the coastline. It can be an alternative to Istanbul for those who want to buy a house for investment.

Local people generally do not speak English. It is still possible to communicate with young people in English when you want to ask for an address to find a local place. Sometimes Google Maps can't help us enough to find every place we are looking for :) I can say that the streets are neat and clean in general. My previous visit to Batumi before this was in the summer and the streets were more crowded. It is already known that it is a city that attracts tourists in the summer months.

USD has continued its downtrend against the Lari since March. Currently 1 USD is around 2.6 Lari. Local people still complain about the economic situation. However, they were less affected by inflation than their neighbors Turkey. At least the economic results do not seem to have had negative effects on sociocultural society.

I went to the beach in the evening to enjoy the sunset after wandering around enough during the day. There was a calm and peaceful atmosphere. And I started to think… Until a few years ago, people from this city were coming to Turkey to work. They don't stop by anymore after the hyperinflation in Turkey. The supply-demand balance in the world has changed a lot after the pandemic. Investors can see this as an opportunity and investors tend to commodities that cannot be adequately controlled by the state in countries with high inflation. How accurate can it be to portray this situation as the recent stagnation in cryptocurrencies? I'm not so sure about this, but I think it might have an effect. One thing I am sure of is that time is full of surprises. Surely, we will see that how the dynamics will change in the future.

Hemen hemen her yıl Karadenizi ziyaret ettiğimde genellikle Batum'a da uğrarım. Geçen hafta Batum'a yaptığım ziyaret diğerlerinden biraz farklıydı.

Selamlar
