The next victim could be you or me; LOH Contest #99

According to the United Nations,Gender-Based violence refers to harmful acts directed at an individual based on their gender. It is rooted in gender inequality, the abuse of power and harmful norms.

It is true that women and girls are the main victims of GBV. However it can affect men, families and communities as well. Gender based violence comes in forms such as physical, sexual and psychological.

In Nigeria, where I come from, there are laws against gender based violence and cases can be reported at ReportGBV which is a body under the Ministry of Womens Affairs.

This dashboard contains a detailed directory of helplines across the states of Nigeria. The helplines include government and social Organization’s together with their contact number, physical address and websites.

It is quite sad to know for a fact that while some states have more than enough foundations, agencies and Organizations, others have little to nothing. A quick search on the website will reveal this to you. What will victims in such places do? The answer is heartbreaking.

Another fact is that, while GBV is frowned upon on paper, the reality is that many victims are either too afraid to come forth, lack basic information on how to report, or are bullied by customs and traditions to remain silent.

According to the website, out of 9084 reported cases, only 33 perpetrators have been convicted.

But How Can We Stop Gender-Based Violence?

Sadly, victims and perpetrators of gender-based violence can be anyone. This is a menace in society, a dirty ugly vice that is pulling its victims into a deep black hole. Victims tend to lose hold of who they really are and become shadows of themselves. Violence of any form is abuse and must stop.

We must let victims know that they have a right. Education must travel through the nooks and crannies of the world. Through the doors and windows. Victims must know that there is light out there and there is a way out.

In our society today, more people than we know are going through one form of gender-based violence or the other. I'd like to say to you that there is help out there. Talk to someone today. You have rights and you deserve your freedom just like everyone else. Speak!

This is my entry to LOH Community Contest #99. @sommylove, I would love for you to join the contest.

Gender inequality good solution I know is to speak up 🗣️🗣️🗣️ there are bad situations in which people may find themselves in but they keep hiding for the fear of what if instead of speaking up and getting help or solutions which they deserve.
Nice piece Thanks dear for sharing 🌹.

many victims are either too afraid to come forth, lack basic information on how to report, or are bullied by customs and traditions to remain silent.

I feel the same way and you are right, we do need to help in disseminating information so that others who might not be aware of their rights may be able to find their own voice.

Exactly. When people don’t speak up, it is assumed all is well. Thanks for dropping by.

Fear is a factor that limits the action of people whose lives have been violated. It is sad to know that there are many people who suffer from violence.

It is heart-wrenching knowing that they may get little to no help. Which is the reason awareness is important. Thank you for your time.

Education is definitely the key. It starts at home. I think we also have to get to the bottom of WHY men become violent and how to express their emotion in a more healthy way. Sometimes they aren't taught that as children as boys are raised in a particular way.

You are right. Boys are raised differently from girls. They typically aren't taught that it is okay to be in your feelings. They are taught to put up that masculinity. I have a son and I will raise him as I would my daughter. Thank you so much.

It is heartbreaking to think of the women who are victims in places where there are no such organizations, and where there are they are afraid
Thanks for sharing the information

So sad but that’s the reality. It is the reason we advocate for serious education, awareness and enlightenment.

Thank so much.

I hope we find it in ourselves to speak up and fight for our equality rights. I hope we find the drive to education and never deprive ourselves of learning so we would never be underestimated and taken advantage of. This is one way to spread awareness about GBV and encouragement to people experiencing this. Thank you so much for sharing!

You are right on point. I hope the ones who have lost their voices find them and keep them. I hope the ones who already have a voice help to amplify that of others. We can't stop education until we are sure everyone has got the message.

Thank you so much for your time here.

Victims must know that there is light out there and there is a way out.

So true. Sadly this usually happens at home or work. Places where it can sometimes feel like leaving isn't an option 😢

Wow....there is indeed a help out there!!
It's high time women should learn to speak up and stop enduring violence. The truth is that many are deformed especially those in rural areas and so, suffers violence every now and then. I hope women get to be more alert, fight for our rights and be more free.
Thanks for sharing this my dear

This should be tackled but I feel it's going to take forever for this revolution to take effects. Anyone could be a victim of such circumstances but we can avoid this by standing up on those things that aren't in accordance with human rights. I found your post through dreemport
