Revisiting My Childhood Shellfish-Gathering Spot

Happy Wednesday Hivers!

Time really flies, and here I am again with another walk to share for #WednesdayWalk, initiated by @tattoodjay!

When I was a child, life wasn’t as easy as it is today. We were a big family, and although my mother had a small business, it wasn’t enough to support all of us. That’s why my siblings and I did our best to help our parents in any way we could. Growing up, we learned the value of hard work and the importance of helping one another, even in our own little ways.

One of the things we used to do back then was gather shellfish along the shore. Whatever we collected helped us save money because we didn’t have to spend as much on food to go with our rice. It may seem like a simple thing, but it was a big help to our family. Now, come along with me as I take you to our usual spot, where we used to gather plenty of shellfish when we were kids.

Back when I was a child, I was really afraid of sea creatures, especially when my friends would throw them at me whenever they found one! But now, I’ve gotten used to them after encountering them so many times over the years. I guess the more familiar we become with something, the less scary it feels.

The spot where we used to gather shellfish was a bit far from our house. But we didn’t mind the distance because we could collect so much more here compared to the area near our home. Maybe it’s because fewer people come here to gather shellfish, unlike in our place, where more people often go shellfish gathering.

A big smile spread across my face as soon as we arrived at the place where we used to gather shellfish. It had been so many years since I last visited this place, and coming back brought back so many beautiful childhood memories.

Further ahead, there’s a mangrove area where we used to catch plenty of fish. We always had so much fun trying to catch them! One of our favorite things to do was swimming whenever the tide came in. We never really worried about the rising tide because all of us knew how to swim. We would even jump from the mangrove trees straight into the sea! Those were such fun and carefree days, and remembering them now makes me smile.

Back then, we never thought of gathering shellfish as work. All we had in mind was collecting shellfish and having fun together. Playing was always the highlight of our adventure, and before we knew it, we had already gathered plenty of shellfish to bring home. We were happy, not because of how much we collected, but because of all the fun we had along the way.

Looking back, it reminds me of how simple childhood happiness was. We didn’t need expensive toys or fancy places to have fun. Sometimes, all it took was a little adventure with our siblings, some laughter, and the freedom to enjoy the day. Those simple moments became precious memories that we still carry with us today.

The sun was slowly setting, so I asked my mom if we could head home before it got too late. On our way back, we passed by the beach, and I enjoyed walking barefoot on the pebbles. It felt good to connect with nature and enjoy the simple pleasure of walking barefoot along the shore. I hope you enjoyed joining me on my walk this week!

Childhood memories are the best, especially through the eyes of a child exploring and experiencing nature. You are fortunate to have had such a wonderful time at the seashore.
