Discord And Physical Appearance

Life is too short to spend another day at war with yourself.
— Ritu Ghatourey

Beyond conflicts and discord in the society, the internal one comes first. We may not want to admit it but some healthy percentage of the world populace are at war with themselves about their physical appearance. Let me narrow it down to the women folk!

See me as a genie who grants wishes freely. What would you truly wish for? Some ladies would say they desire to stay slender and beautiful regardless of what they eat! I am one of them, no doubt. Our bodies are a priority for us and so is staying in shape.

I see young girls wanting to look differently from how they are born. No wonder plastic surgeons are making huge sums of money! I hear there's the Jennifer Lopez hips, Beyoncé lips, Alicia Keys boobs etc. I could go on and on but this is reality which got me thinking - what drives young girls and ladies to think this way?

I believe girls just don't simply decide to hate their bodies. We teach them to, which creates internal discord within them. Consequently, some become bulimic or anorexic just to avoid the result of inherited genes and struggle to stay slim so they can be acceptable to modern society. Very unhealthy!

This internal discord or conflict with our bodies is as a result of conforming to what the society wants and expects from us. Isn't it about time we begin to accept ourselves and let those who have accepted themselves help those who have not?

First, who makes up the society? WE! Why do we force others to live a false life? Why would a group of people come together and make themselves a ruling force and determiners of how people should live their lives?

Consider Nayyirah Waheed's words,

And I said to my body, softly. 'I want to be your friend.' It took a long breath. And replied, 'I have been waiting my whole life for this.'
— Nayyirah Waheed

When we begin to say these words to ourselves, then we begin to truly live. It starts with loving ourselves and our bodies and in no time, we develop body confidence.

Above all, let every decision we take concerning our bodies be about our health. You have only one body and life's short.

It is my sincerest hope that people see themselves as unique, beautiful, and powerful in their own right. Everyone has beauty within themselves. More than physical beauty, it is their confidence, their persona, and their soul that makes someone beautiful. Not some physical outer shell

Well said! It is the inner beauty that should count more than the outer. More importantly, being comfortable in one's skin is key.

I appreciate you stopping by and writing an inspiring comment. 😊

Good one
Beauty in the hands of the beholder. I don’t think it the shape or the out look that really matters
Most time I see ladies that have to go extra miles of painting their face maybe it’s called foundation I don’t even know. I wonder why.
Most would bleach, go into surgery and all sorts maybe to please the opposite sex.

One thing that not clear to them is, they might have gotten their desires but there is always a consequence

You write so well dear. The topic you raised in your post is also of great concern in today's world. Actually we are living an outwardly life, just for others. Most of us never live according to their own way. The people who live according to other's wish, never get to be happy. I believe in the fact that everyone is different and so everyone should follow their own way of living their lives. Afterall this life we get for ourselves and only we are responsible for the quality of our life. We should enjoy it fully, as we never know how much journey is left.

Thank you my dear @kemmyb
May you always be blessed with love light and peace.
Keep smiling 😊😊like this 😊😊

I like how you captured this issue in this one sentence. We are different, uniquely so and should learn to appreciate it rather than live to satisfy someone else.

Thanks for this lovely comment. 😊

Really! The goal should be about being healthy and not about looking like a certain person.

Self acceptance is a key to living
a happier and a more fulfilled life.

The truth is the society would never listen. We like setting up standards for others.

An individual needs to learn how to accept herself irrespective of the so called societal standard.

Insightful piece

Muchas gracias por su visita y apoyo. Apreciar y aceptar nuestro cuerpo es importante para disfrutar de la vida. Cuando intentamos vivir o parecernos a otra persona, perdemos la alegría que viene con la Vida. 🙂

I think media has a lot to do in spreading the standards of physical appearance. The heroines are all slim smart girls. Such an appearance is rarely available in real life.

I remember when I was a kid, the dolls used to have a kid like appearnce with a fat (broad) body while today I see the barbie, elsa, repunzel etc. as the dolls. What a girl would get from the early years of her life.

Fashion industry has its own negative impact in this regard.

It is a thought provoking post @kemmyb

Great post!
Unfortunately the we, us of the society, is actually a small group of people which includes the clothing and beauty manufacturers, their advertising and marketing companies and the social media influencers, who are all united in influencing society- the rest of us, that beauty is all aesthetics instead of inner beauty only, so we buy their products and look down upon this that either can't afford to buy their products or don't fit into their products and then that judgement and segregation leads to This internal discord or conflict with our bodies is as a result of conforming to what the society wants and expects from us.

If these guys- the clothing and beauty manufacturers, their advertising and marketing companies and the social media influencers, didn't put the pressure on the rest of us- society, then we'd all be happy in our own skin and would have no need to vilify others for being in theirs..

I want to have a different body- a slimmer, healthier, fitter one, but not so much because of wanting to fit in, but because of the positive medical implications.

Well said, @chocolatescorpi! I apologize for the late response. 🤦‍♀️ Indeed, our inner beauty counts more. We are all beautiful in our own way but this internal discord makes us doubt and think the grass is greener for the other person.

Let's tend and care for our own grass instead. Taking care of our bodies should be about our health!

Thank you so much for stopping by. 😊

Such a great line!

As a friend of mine says, just drive your own bus in your own lane and don't worry about everyone else...
