I ducked my head a little, strands of my hair falling forward to hide my expression from the stern looking detectives. The tall, lean man slapped a file on the table, the unexpected harsh sound amid the silence made me jerk up.

I glanced up at him. He smirked, pulled out a chair and sat down. His partner, a middle-aged, pretty woman stood instead, her arms folded on her chest as she stared down at me. I glanced at them both and ducked behind my hair.

"How long do you think you can hold out? Till your 48 hours expire? We have the evidence."

I shook with dread inwardly but feigned calmness and confidence on the outside as I replied. "If you did, we would not be having this conversation. You would have charged me by now. Detectives, quit wasting my time."

The lady detective slammed her hand on the table and bent close to me. Her sugary breath fanned my cheek. I leaned back a little. "You are not smart at all, you know that?" She gritted out.

I gave her a lopsided grin which seemed to annoy her more.

"You think because your DNA was absent from the scene of the crime, there's nothing to tie you to the kidnapping?

"Detective, I don't think it. I know it."

"No, you don't." The man said, opened the file and spread two papers. "This is a forensic report of crumbs of Jelly's potato chips found mashed into the rug. On the day you were arrested, you had the same potato chips in your possession..."

"Everybody eats Jelly's potato chips. It does not mean anything!" I angrily interjected.

"Oh but it does, Colin." The man revealed, smiling satisfactorily. My heart began to thud fast. Are they onto me? But I cleaned up thoroughly.

"We missed it at first but after taking a second look, we discovered the crumbs mixed with strands of Casey, your cat's fur. You don't go anywhere without your cat, the same cat you used to lure Beth to you."

The man smiled, stood up while the lady detective straightened up like the case was closed. I had to think fast about how to get myself out of this situation. I cannot go to jail. They walked to the door….

"Wait!" I looked at them with pleading eyes. "S-she's my daughter." I dropped the bombshell.

A good answer. I like to see if the smirk on the detective's face disappeared. 😂
