My Books Are My Favourite Companion

Hello Bibliophiles! There's no hiding place for me as I have been tagged by some participants to this contest, so I will be participating as well! Thanks to the moderators of the Hive Book Club who came up with this interesting contest.

These are the questions:

What makes you enjoy a book?

"There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate’s loot on Treasure Island."
— Walt Disney

Can I say that reading is one of the greatest pleasures in life for me? Everyone around me knows I love to read. It's a culture my Dad imbibed into me right from when I could start reading as a child. I remember reading some Enid Blyton's, especially Famous Five and other children's books.

png_20211125_163026_0000.png

As I grew older, my Dad would buy me novels, give me a specific time to read and then discuss them with me. This helped to speed up my reading. I was not too happy about it at first because I wanted to play more! Hahaha. Now I am always grateful for such training anytime I think about it.

I love books that literally and figuratively blow my mind! For fiction, I enjoy the intrigues, the plot twists, the action, the unexpected such that I would be captivated. I love to read fantasy/paranormal, thriller, and romance genres. For non-fiction, I expect to learn new things every time I pick up a book to read.

I have special memories of books that have inspired me, shaped me to be who I am today and the growth process is still ongoing.

Books are such a powerful tool that have changed lives and even our world. If a book does not add to my life, like positively influence me, then I do not see any reason to read it. Successful leaders I know are readers and critical thinkers because books widen our perspective and sharpen our minds.

That’s the thing about books. They let you travel without moving your feet.
— Jhumpa Lahiri

When I read a book, I am transported to that place and time. I find myself living and thinking like the characters in the book. This perspective helps me when I write fiction because I place myself in place of my characters.

What is your favourite time or place to read?
Do you like to read outdoors, before bed or on the bus or on your way to work?

I prefer to read at night or very early in the morning before dawn when the world is asleep and everywhere is calm. This is because I don't enjoy reading in noisy places or in a crowd. Also, a quiet environment makes it easy for the book to sink in.

I dislike distractions when I am reading, especially if it's a novel but ironically that's when people come around me the most! I would be so engrossed in a book then a family or my sister or friend would show up with some gist. Grrrh! Hahaha.

I don't have a favourite place to read as I can read anywhere so long as I am comfortable, there's good lighting and it's a quiet environment.

Anytime I am heading out, I always, always carry a book and with mobile devices everywhere now, accessing digital formats of books has been made easy. I could be in a bus and pull out my phone to read.

When I am in the office after the day's work or when I am on break, I put on my phone and start reading. I can never complain about boredom because my books are my favourite companion. My colleagues at work know this and do not bother me anytime my nose is buried in a book.

Do you focus on character development, thoughtful messages or the level of intrigue a plot generates in you?

When I read, I focus on ALL parts of a book because I love to write fiction. I not only read for leisure, I study the author's distinct style of writing. I also look out for morals/lessons and expand my knowledge about the world from books. For instance, when I read sci-fi or biographies, I concentrate on issues involving advanced technology, science etc., and compare the information with a little online research to verify the author's viewpoint. This has been very helpful because most of the things I know came from reading about them in books.

This is my entry to the Hive Book Club Community Contest #3 All About Readers. To participate, click on the link. I invite @dreemsteem and @esther-emmanuel to join in the fun!

You and I are on the same page on what we focus on in a book, moral lessons. I read before I sleep also, at least by then everyone had retired for the day.

I am glad your dad introduced reading culture to you. Honestly, it is a priceless gift. I enjoyed reading your entry and wish you the best of luck.

If you enjoy real science in your sci-fi, you have to read Robert J Sawyer :) ...

What a nicely written post. Good stuff. 🙂

I've just now gotten back to HIVE and discovered there was a book community here 😱 I'm just going around responding to posts that pique my interest.

I dislike distractions when I am reading, especially if it's a novel but ironically that's when people come around me the most!

For some reason, I share this experience. I am pretty sure that the universe is telling us something, but it cannot be 'stop reading'. Maybe 'pay more attention to the people around you?' That's the more acceptable message. 😅

When I read, I focus on ALL parts of a book because I love to write fiction. I not only read for leisure, I study the author's distinct style of writing.

Same. Like 💯💯. I'm actually a smidge bummed I didn't talk more about this in my post. But yeah. I've found through the years that my reading perception has changed so much. Nowadays, it feels much more like a job than it used to. Since there's so much to learn if you are really looking to improve. Plus, my reading time (slow as it is) gets even slower.

I'm not complaining, mind you. It's just a different experience. 🙂

Hello @grocko! Welcome back to Hive. I see you are a fantastic fiction writer. I very much enjoyed your microfiction.

I've found through the years that my reading perception has changed so much.

Well said. Mine changes everytime I pick a book to read. It's all part of the mental growth process. Hehe. Thanks a lot for stopping by to read and comment on my post. 😊

Gosh, this message is very clear, and I believe you, it could be the universe telling us to create more time for the people around us.

This is the beauty of reading. One's imagination is stirred up and is limitless. It's my favourite thing about reading.

Awesome entry @kemmyb ! Goodluck with the contest.

Exactly! A keen reader is lost in the world created by the author in the book. Thanks a lot for your kind comment. 🙂

This has been very helpful because most of the things I know came from reading about them in books.

Like I always tell people, I am well-traveled through books 😂. A lot of times, people don't understand how much self-help they can get from just giving into reading.

My colleagues at work know this and do not bother me anytime my nose is buried in a book.

I always find it very commendable when people around us respect certain timings that are important to us.

Beautifully written post @kemmyb

No wonder you have the ability to do amazing plots even with timers and prompts. Now, I understand why.

Dad did a great job teaching you to love reading, even though you felt bad at first.

Reading in the morning and late in the night is sweet because everywhere is quiet. You have good friends who understands how much love you have for books and stay away from distracting you.

Los libros influyen en nosotros, nos ayudan a moldear nuestra personalidad e, incluso, nos muestran un abanico de posibilidades tan amplio que podemos modificar nuestros juicios valorativos considerando nuevos elementos. Por eso tomo una frase de tu post: “Tengo recuerdos especiales de libros que me han inspirado, me han moldeado para ser quien soy hoy y el proceso de crecimiento aún está en curso.” Fue un gusto pasar por aquí, leerte y saludarte.

Books influence us, help us shape our personality and even show us such a wide range of possibilities that we can modify our value judgments by considering new elements. That is why I take a phrase from your post: "I have special memories of books that have inspired me, shaped me to be who I am today and the growth process is still ongoing." It was a pleasure to stop by, read you and greet you.
