"Mama Agba, it's out of respect to you that we have come to speak to you first before we take any further decision," Ajibade said calmly, being the spokesman for the three-men committee of the Onibade family that visited Mama Agba.

When Wura caught sight of them from afar strolling towards their hut, she hurried inside to alert her grandmother.

Mama Agba could see the worried look on Wura's face and calmed her. "My dear child, cheer up. Don't be alarmed. I have an inkling as to what their unannounced visit is all about and it's nothing more than to stir up more conflict."

"Maami, had something happened before that you did not tell me?" Wura asked.

Mama Agba held her gaze. "It is not everything that is meant for the ear of a child."

The solemn look on the face of the three men who are members of Wura's extended family got her worried. Ajibade glanced in her direction. "Wura, why don't you get us some drinks?"

Wura got up to do as asked when Mama Agba interrupted. "Ajibade, would I come to your house and request a drink without you offering first?"

Silence filled the compound at the loaded question pointing out the height of Ajibade's disrespect. His mouth fell open in embarrassment. "Haa, Mama Agba. It is not so. I merely thought to keep Wura busy while the adults discussed the matter."

Wura, tongue in cheek, coughed into her hand to stop herself from grinning at the obvious discomfort on the face of the men. Mama Agba nodded. "Wura, bring your uncles some palm wine and after that, stay inside."

After serving the drinks, Wura hid behind the door, her ear pasted on the wood so she could hear what they had to say.

"Mama, Wura is not a child anymore. She is almost eighteen. By our custom, she should be married and it is on us as her uncles, since her father rests with our ancestors, to choose a worthy man for her."

Wura froze behind the door, her eyes widened in shock!

Weldon @kemmyb, although the world has grown into civilization, but it appears that some elders still do not understand. They think they could interfere in every single bit of their children’s life especially the ladies when it comes to marriage.

It is a wonderful and contemporary scene you have painted here, nice one
