I tried taking a record of the movies I watched in 2023, those I reviewed and came up with an interesting idea to write a post capturing my best films of the year and reasons I chose them.

Last year was an interesting one in the entertainment/movie industry because just as I saw fine, superb movies that can be termed masterpieces or classics, I also came across those that the world already rated highly but turned out to be a whopping flop. Of course, I can't claim to have seen all the movies made in 2023. No one can actually, though I wish I had the time to see them all.

In no particular order, I'll drop a highlight of my favourite movies for 2023.

Fast X

Before you roll your eyes, I'm into action-packed movies and the Fast And Furious series has been on my radar since the inception. This sequel is the first of a two-part finale (sadly) and the second part will be released next year. It's the best of the franchise so far, packed with dangerously exciting car chases and stunts, gunfights and action sequences as Dom Toretto's team faces an enemy that is unrelenting. If you want a full, adrenaline-pumping two and half hour watch, it's this one!

Extraction 2

I give you another action-packed thriller, a continuation of Chris Hemsworth as Tyler Rake, a black ops mercenary. If you've seen the first film, you'll agree with me that this sequel is better, faster, violent and adrenaline-pumping. Tyler Rake is barely recovered from the wounds he sustained in the first film when he gets another job to rescue his wife's sister and two children from a Georgian prison. Believe me, this almost two-hour long film is worth it. No hype.

John Wick: Chapter 4

And how can I mention all these cool action thrillers without John Wick? Again, another impressive franchise that the movie industry kept us entertained with these past years. No doubt Keanu Reeves is the fitting actor to embody the character of John Wick. So far, Chapter 4 is the best of the films in my opinion. It delivered well on the car chases, action, fight/gun scenes much more than I expected. If you're yet to see, you're missing out.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves

If you don't know, I love high fantasy. This one here reminds me a little of Lord Of The Rings. It's a fantasy and adventure film with swords and sorcery based on the popular fantasy game, Dungeons & Dragons. It's one of 2023 films that I termed a masterpiece because it's a fun, delightful and hilarious watch. The adventures are captivating and the comedies are rib-cracking. The cast of Chris Pine, Hugh Grant, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page make it an entertaining watch.

Past Lives

This one is unlike the cheesy or cliche romances that cinephiles are used to. It's a film that will hold attention for years to come because of the artistic work put into it by Celine Song. A romance that spans out over several decades between Korean New Yorker, Greta Lee, and her childhood sweetheart, Teo Yoo, who never left Seoul. Years later, they meet and there's a third wheel who struggles with the feelings of this couple. How do you think this ends? It's a creative and brilliant work.

Boston Strangler

Another film that I term a masterpiece. The filmmakers take their audience back to the 1960s where we find a series of murders yet no named culprit. It's a kind of scandalous story that we would never know about unless it's shown in a film. It's also a story that shines the light on the reality of the female gender worldwide at any age. If you are a fan of Keira Knightley and love historical films, watch this and let me know your thoughts.

Fair Play

This one caught me by the throat and held on for many days. I cringed every time the memory of some scenes flooded my mind. A compelling psychological thriller and drama that evaluates unbalanced relationships and how it affects the female gender. I admire Phoebe Dynevor especially after her remarkable performance in the historical series, Bridgerton. This film will break your hearts at some points and make you angry at others. A must watch!

A Haunting In Venice

Who doesn't love a great whodunnit mystery based on Agatha Christie's novel? This one isn't your regular murder mystery, it spices up the suspense and tension with some spooky scenes! Kenneth Branagh is fantastic as Hercule Poirot and we see Tina Fey and Michelle Yeoh in action. It's a perfect film to see at Halloween. Just remember to keep the lights on while watching!

So far, these are my favourites from the numerous films I saw last year. I still have some movies released in 2023 like Oppenheimer to watch and hopefully I do so soon. I wonder what the movie industry has in store for cinephiles this year. Let me know your favourites in the comment section.

Good selection, I liked Extraction 2 more than the first one, there was more action and adrenaline and I'm a fan of all the John Wick movies, although it had a 7.7 rating on IMDb I always find the performance of Keanu Reeves interesting, I think that this is not the final movie and that they will surprise us with something later on.

I think that this is not the final movie...

I think so too! I've been reading some rumours that there's another sequel in the works but the way Chapter 4 ended, a little sad and unexpected, but fitting.

Thanks so much for your visit. !PIZZA 🙂
