Cafe Miniamdang? Take this off your watchlist 🀑

(Edited)

It is not very often I watch a series with so much doubt about its quality, but this particular one I'm reviewing, Cafe Minamdang, left me with no option.

RDZwY_3m~2.jpg

I don't think I will be saying any good thing about this Kdrama and I genuinely won't mind leaking some spoilers because, by the end of this review, I want to make sure that anyone that was already planning to watch this will give it a rest and focus on more serious series.

I just got off the back of watching the well-made Alchemy Of Souls when I decided to dive into this.

For the record, according to the data I extracted from AsianWiki, this particular show has 20% more viewers than Alchemy Of Souls and I was genuinely convinced by the plot and casts that this will make for a very interesting series. But, from the very first scene of the first episode of this 18-episode drama, I started seeing so many things that made me cringe with disbelief.

The Plot was the only decent thing about this Kdrama

As I said, the plot looked good on paper.

This is the story of a former criminal profiler who was framed while chasing a psychopathic serial killer and ends up serving jail time. After serving his time, he used his profiling skill to pull scams as a shaman in his attempt to find the serial killer... and whatnot.

What went wrong?

Almost everything. There are levels to this stuff and the plot ticks all the marks for me. I've always been fascinated by Kdramas that have to do with psychos, crime, investigations, action and co.

This series was supposed to be a good blend of all these and it was, but the scriptwriter and director did a VERY POOR job. No kidding.

1. The Funny Stuff.

Every time they tried to bring humour into a scene, it gave me an uncomfortable feeling because all the 'funny stuff' were forced. It didn't seem natural and the sound effects used to heighten the humour ended up having a reverse effect.

kpwyd_3f~2.jpg

Every 'funny stuff' that was added to this show was completely unnecessary. They drifted too much from the main plot and this is fundamentally why this series had to last for 18 episodes.

Jeezzzz... If they only focused on the crime aspect of the show, this would have been killed and buried in 10 episodes and it would have been more interesting.

2. The action scenes.

The female lead was introduced as someone that took out a whole gang of ruthless gangsters without taking a hit. The main lead had a guy in his team who was supposed to be very skilful in martial arts. The killers in the show have been killing since childhood.

R6xyx_3m~2.jpg

Add these characters up and you will expect a very well-choreographed and interesting fight scene. But, the director successfully ruined this side of the show. The action scenes were poorly choreographed.

It's even more embarrassing because I've seen some of these actors do very well in action movies. But all the action scenes in this show were filled with flower boys and girls. It is awful.

3. The Character development.

The main female lead and a bunch of other characters had a role which didn't develop as the show progressed. The character that was most affected by this poor character development is that of Su-Cheol which was played by Kwak Si-Yana.

j5q4b_3f~3.jpg

He was supposed to be a sidekick to the main lead, but the idea of making him act as a mentally deranged sidekick was uncalled for. It didn't add anything to the overall development of the show and it's awful how it seems like the introduction of each new episode worsened his disability.

He had an awful lot of screen time and every freaking one of those was frustrating to watch.

How did this show get such a high rating and viewership?

8.9 rating in Asianwiki
8.0 rating in Mydramalist
7.1 rating in IMBD

Seriously, how did people rate this show so highly? This is no match to any of the first sets of Kdramas I watched back in 2008/2009. It's embarrassing to see something like this in 2022.

Just because the actors made so much effort to bring life to this poorly written and directed show, I will painstakingly give it a 4/10.

Take away all the cheap-rated comedy scenes and the poorly executed action scenes, then... I may consider giving a 6/10.

This is the worst Kdrama I've seen this year. I hope Narco-Saints won't be anything like this. Fingers crossed!

Thanks For Not Missing Any Full-stop Or Comma

Oh great! If I didn't read this and just saw the movie with that guy in the first image, I would have rushed to see the drama πŸ˜…

That is because he is a great actor in the dramas I've seen him in before.

It's no surprise that this drama turns out worse but it's surprising that it has a high rating, I really wonder why.

Forced funny stuffs? πŸ˜… It's bad already, thanks for the review (I mean spoiler)

Hahah... I couldn't stop myself from dropping these spoilers. Lolz. I would have dropped more because this drama is a complete mess. The scriptwriter and director didn't get it right at all.

The script was also inconsistent. One moment you will think they are about to get all serious, the next second... every one starts doing some really weird 'funny stuff' which turns out to be an eyesore. Haha.

The male lead is a reputable actor in the industry. I wonder why he accepted this project. And, this happens to be the only project he has worked on this year. Lolzzzzz. The casting as a whole is superb, but the directing of the show didn't match make sense. Same with the script. Lolz.

I'm glad you won't be watching this. Haha. Bid farewell to this one. Lolz. It's not worth it at all. !PIZZA

I guess some actors don't get to decide all the projects they accept, this one was forced on him πŸ˜… he's more than this normally.

I should go ahead with other dramas recommended, thank goodness this wasn't recommended before I saw this review πŸ˜‚

Hope to see the review on Narco-saints, seems to be a must watch... I've heard a little about it

Hahah... That's possible. Actors are assigned projects by the company they signed with. This could be one of such cases. Lolz.

Narco-Saints seems like a good one. It has just 6 episodes and most of the filming (probably all) was done South America. I already have the full episodes and will watch them within the week. Haha.

Let's see how it will be. I wonder if you will like it though. It's basically about drugs, cartels and similar stuff. Haha

Haha... I guessed as much. Lolzzzzz.

About the episodes, that's what the new era of Kdrama is offering especially when the show is a Netflix production. Lolzzzzz.

I find it hard to deal with all these short series too.

While it’s true that some parts of the drama were forced, I think it’s still a good show to watch.
I have to agree that I was quite disappointed of how the end fight scenes turned out but well, other parts were interesting to watch. I still think they put up a great show.

Oh, so you have watched this. Haha. You are really going deep into the Kdrama world.

Normally, I'm not usually a big fan of Kdrama that have this type of flow. I also didn't enjoy the role of Su cheol and how it lacked any character development throughout the series. Haha.

I always wonder why this show got very high rating, but it appears some people really give it a lot of credit. Haha.

It's good to still enjoyed it despite the disappointing part of it. Which Kdrama are you watching at the moment?

I’m watching Little Women. It has a gloomy and mystery vibe so be careful. πŸ˜…

I also hated the part that Su Cheol is branded as the β€œdumb” one in the group but oh well.. He was so different when he was shown in the first few episodes when he was the man behind the bar making coffee and wearing decent clothes. πŸ˜…

Hahah... 'Little Women'? Amazing!

They started releasing that this just recently so it's in my watchlist and I will dive into it when they are done releasing it.

For now, I have; Adama, Big Mouth, Extraordinary Attorney Woo, The law Cafe, If you wish upon me, One dollar lawyer, May it please he court, Blind, and Bargain. Haha.

All those are in my watchlist but the next I will be watching is Narco-Saints. I will be reviewing that within this week since it's just 6 episodes. Haha

From your list, I have only watched Atty Woo. It is nice too! πŸ˜…
What kind of genre is Narco-Saints?

Narco-Saints is action with the plot based around drug smuggling cartels. I have the full episodes as released two days ago and I will be watching them this week.

I will also rate it as PG-18 because I sensed they will be using really strong language and cuss words. Plus, the action scenes may get really brutal.

I kinda like how some part of the setting was based in Suriname, a country in South America.

This is most recent trailer

If you can cope with all I mentioned about this, you will surely enjoy the show. Haha

Haha... I watched a very dark one before this but I didn't enjoy this because of the romance and humour they tried to fit into the show.

At the moment, I'm watching Narco-Saints and it's all vibe with a very interesting story. Haha. !PIZZA

Hahaha.... The rant is very important because they did a very poor job in the script and directing the show. It's even more weird that they used really good actors to execute a poorly directed project like that. Haha.
