Learning can get harder or easier.

"Is learning that hard?" is something I've had to think about a lot of time because I'm someone who wants to learn so much about the weirdest things you can possibly think of. In my experience, I've come to understand that the best way to understand how hard or easy learning can be is by looking at how things work in a classroom environment.

When you are positioned as a classroom teacher and you have to go through an essay you gave to your students, that's exactly when you will see the difference between a well-written essay and a poorly written one. The well-written essays are easy to mark because everything is nicely done. But, for the poorly written ones? Oh, my God! The whole essay just doesn't make any sense.

What would you do in that position?

You try to teach the students the right way to go about their essay writing. They need the right words when forming sentences. They need to phrase their sentences properly. The order of the sentences in each paragraph has to be right. With all these in place, a really bad essay can become really good and if they work towards it, they will surely learn.

The problem though is that some students will learn while others will continue to present poorly written essays. For those that learn, they will say that learning is easy. But those who fail to learn for whatever reason, will always tell you that learning is hard.

In my case, I know that learning in itself is hard. Now, we can talk about the factors that will make it easier or harder.

They are;

1. Who are you learning from? If you want to learn MMA from a dude who can't hold his fist for 5 seconds, you will end up learning NOTHING. So, whenever you are learning anything in school, from your mentor, from a friend, on YouTube, podcast, or from Google, if the person you are trying to learn from doesn't know what he/she is teaching, it will make your learning harder. The same applies to vice versa.

2. Are you really making an effort to learn? You want to be multilingual. So, you paid and bookmarked a lot of tutorial videos on YouTube about the language you want to learn. You created an account on Duolingo and even subscribed for the premium package. You do all these which are commendable, but you don't go back to watch the videos you bookmarked. You don't check into Duolingo to learn that new language. Why wouldn't learning be hard for you?

These things are no-brainers. Learning is truly hard but when you are making a genuine effort to learn and you are learning from the right source, it will become so much easier to learn. This applies to all areas of life even in behaviors.

I will wrap things up by highlighting two things;

The easiest thing I learned is to say the truth at all times and at all costs. I started learning about that from a very young age and I'm still learning it. However, the reason I see it as an easy thing "for me" to learn is that it's harder for me to look you in your face and lie than to say the truth.

Meanwhile, the most difficult thing for me to learn is a new language. I'm not even kidding. I lived in the Northern part of Nigeria for a year and I can't say "My name is K" in Hausa, their native language. Now, I'm living in the SouthWestern part of Nigeria where they speak Yoruba. Guess what? I still can't say "My name is K" in the language. Haha. Why? Because I've never really tried to learn it.

So, regardless of how difficult it can be to learn something, it's only hard to learn it if I don't make an effort to do so.

Thanks For Not Missing Any Full-stop or Comma.

There are so many things to learn in life, but learning to be truthful may be the most important!

Thanks so much. Saying the truth is something I learned very early in life and it's harder to do that in this day and time because of censorship and because people prefer to be lied to. However, I'm still trying to stick to the truth and to always say the truth or say nothing at all.

Learning another man's language isn't an easy thing to do, besides you didn't grow up there if you'd grown up there it would have been a different case but you didn't, if you're eager to learn the language then I think you should move around with your pen and jotter in case you hear someone speaking you can just jot down everything to practiced by you later😁.

Haha... Learning those languages is not an easy thing ooo. There are times when I feel like I'm rebelling against any idea that's edged towards learning those languages.

It's funny because when I was in Hausa land, folks that are not natives would like to speak Hausa with traders in order to get a good treat. Meanwhile, I just go straight out with English 😂. Lol.

Heheh, that's very true... Learning a language is actually easy when you're young and grew up within that tribe but learning a new language as an adult..oops, its really hard.
You've also outlined wonderful points to put in consideration if you really want to learn and they're nice... It indeed all boils down to us because we need to be interested before it manifests

Great publication

That's true, bro. Learning a language is not easy at all, especially for an adult who has other more serious things to prioritize. Haha. It's just so tough to sit back and learn a language.

For most of us, it’s a blessing that we are truthful people. Thanks to our parents. Right from birth, I’ve been trained to tell the truth at all times and it has just become a part of me.

Learning a huge language is really not easy. I’ve been in a new place for almost 5 years now and I’m still struggling to wrap my head around the language. But I trust that one day, we will get better.

That's very inspiring to know. People don't understand the role parents play but that's exactly the fact and it is manifesting in our generation.

A lot of the people you see with very good habit are people that had very good parents but it's a pity to see so many parents of this generation who allow every rubbish to fly in their home. It makes me wonder how this world will be in the next 10 years.

Wow... Korean? This is interesting. I remember trying to learn Korean in Duolingo too. I'm a big fan of Korean culture, their lifestyle and their Kdrama. Haha. But, to learn the language is very tough for me. I also don't have enough time to commit to learning it

The language part is terrible for me too, mine is better my friend was born in Kaduna and finished all her education there but can not speak Hausa at all even to buy something in the market while I have a boss who can speak most languages in Nigeria without visiting their states.

Hahah... I'm having a very big laugh while reading this comment. There are people like that who just don't go to a lot of places. Yet, they pick up on these languages. Haha

I think that it is pretty challenge to learn a new local language there, since many languages there don't have the same root, pretty independent one from another. So it is learning from scratch everything

Exactly. It's very true because even the people that speak Yoruba try to differentiate the language into different categories. It's not really easy to pick up on the complexity of these languages. Hehe

Who or where you learn from and how much committment you put to whatever you are learning goes a long way.

I think you will learn a new language when you have friends who you are close with and discuss often, once a while they tend to say something in their language and you learn that way. What most people learn first in a new language is insults, maybe you should start from there😂

Hahah... I'm laughing really hard already.

You actually have a very good point because I've noticed that when people try to learn a new language, the first couple of words they pick up and it sticks in their memory are usually insult and a couple of nasty words 😂.

Oh, my goodness. Lol.

Yeah, I have noticed that as a Yoruba. Every person from other tribe would easily learn how to insult and how to greet before learning how to converse well.

Rightly said.
Learning is all a matter of determination.
Not just taking the first step because you're determined to do so, but finishing it.
That's the matter.

That's true, bro. For everything we want to learn, we need to be determined to follow it through till we achieve the big goal.

Using hive as an example, sometimes you would see people lament about how difficult it was to survive on hive as A newbie, whereas you will see some that wouldn't have much to say about the challenges they encountered being a newbie. The difference between the two categories of hiver is that one had a very good teacher and the other did not. Which means people will learn things from matters a lot.

I always thought it was just me but learning a new language has always been difficult, I don't know why it is just as if my brain was programmed to understand two languages which are my native language and the official language.

Exactly. What happens on Hive is a good example of how it becomes so much easier to learn about what happens in an environment when we have a teacher who's really knowledgeable about what's going on and also ready to teach.

The one about language is really relatable. Haha. I'm all about my native language and English. I don't pay a lot of attention to learning additional languages. Haha.

Well said. In my weak moments i find a lot of excuses on why I don't know something or why i don't have something. But then when I reflect I know I am lying to myself. Oh it might be true with respect to the difficulties, they might indeed exist. But there will also be the part where I have not tried enough. At the end of the day, Nothing ventured, Nothing gained. Even as i say this i am sure I will not be doing all that I need to. However at least I can cut out the excuses loop from my life.

I hope your students turn out to be more of the doers rather than the complainers, and they learn how to be a doer from you.

Cheers from a #dreemerforlife

It's amazing to get your thoughts on this and I'm even more impressed when you said that "you will still not be doing all you can".

I believe it can easily be my case too. I could say the same about the things I really want but have yet to achieve those. The good news is that we know that we can't just make excuses. If we can look at ourselves and admit that we haven't done enough, we will end up doing so much more to achieve what we want.

To be fair the opposite situation has also happened to me in my 26 years working. Where a bad appraisal has made me go into deep introspection trying to not find any excuse and instead work on corrections. And then struggling to not be able to do those, and thinking it is my fault. Those were two months of hell. Luckily i decided to go crazy and ask feedback from some other seniors and from my peers, and it became clear that though i could be better at some stuff overall my appraiser was being a jerk and singling me out. So yes, one does need to be kind to oneself. The way I see it don't use an excuse, unless you can conclusively prove that it is an actual reason rather than an excuse :)

Learning can either be simple or difficult depending on who is teaching us, and our desire to learn. I used to lack the ability to lie looking at people in the eyes but I discovered recently that I can do anything unless I didnt want to 🤣🤣

I came across this post on Dreemport

Haha... I'm laughing already at the fact about finding it hard to lie to people's faces. Haha.

The one about the difficulty of learning depending on our teacher is very true. That's a fact. Haha.
