From my Asian side; Happy Chinese New Year 2023

“Black birds tend to like shiny things.” ~ The Bloody Raven

I was going to take a break this week to celebrate the New Year but was reminded of one of the blogging disciplines of perseverance in a recent Ladies of Hive contest prompt. It took a lot of focus, attention, and time over the last week to curate and judge the #ladiesofhive 117th edition contest and I felt quite pleased with the results as I read each post.
If this boosted the morale of some of the ladies, then I’ve successfully accomplished that mission.
I got a busy day so I'll keep this brief.

Now, back to the Silvery treasures.

Sterling Silver Cuff bracelet

Text; Outside: 朋 友, friend, Inside: 925STM, Thailand
0.925 Silver, Weight 12.5g

Nyssacat last year gave me this simple Friend bracelet, not much is known about the brand with the Hallmark illegible. It appears handmade since the stamps are tastefully misaligned for that hand made look. This could use a little polishing.

A Delightful gift! Thank you again @Nyssacat.💋

Next is a ‘Restrike’ blast from the Qin Dynasty past. A modern made traditional Sycee.

10g Fine Silver Sycee
image.png
Text; Private Brand
18.6mm x 11.5mm x 10mm
Mintage Unknown

Minted for a private enterprise. Brilliant uncirculated, individually sealed, and are meant to be gifts perhaps given to select customers and certainly family members. I just had to pick this one up via Nyssacat from Ben at HK Colonial Coins.

10g Fine Silver Sycee
image.png
Text; 精 银, 999, 10g
Translation, ‘Fine Silver’ read from right to left.

The Sycee ingot has been used as currency since the Qin dynasty up until the end of the Quig dynasty. The sycee were not minted by a central mint but by various smiths in accordance to local trade preferences thus the sycee can vary in sizes, shapes and purity.
Without an empire wide central standard currency, professional Money Handlers are needed to determine the value for business transactions.

In present day Chinese tradition, the Gold Sycee are understood as the prominent symbols of wealth and prosperity portrayed in Lunar New Year festivities.

As being part Chinese, I got very interested in Chinese money after I found some old Chinese silver coins in my father's collection that were probably given to him by Grandmother's brother.
So that's the reason I got this delightful little silver Sycee and re-experience the Chinese side of my family heritage.

Thanks for visiting @grindan and Happy Chinese New Year!🧧

That is awesome! Both my father and grandfather collected coins and various silver, but I never got into it... until Hive !LOLZ posts like this make me want to go out and find personally significant pieces too!

Having assets to hold on to is smart, having ones that are tied into family history is even cooler though! Happy Chinese New Year to you as well 😁🤗

I had a chance to pick up a small beautiful authentic gold Sycee from HK Colonial but I am currently deep in debt having to fix my home after the 2022 May flooding. My first priority is to pay off the revolving portion of the debt that is costing me 9%+ APR. Next priority, is pay off my last shopping bill through Nyssacat.
He always sneaks in a few gifts among my purchases.
Stacking will be light this year.

I believe Nyssacat found this hand made Thai bracelet from YPSchwartzy on IG who prowles the many yard sales in search of silver treasures.
Hand crafted like this have a simple charm of their own, I figure it may have been originally owned by a vacationer that have returned Southeast Asia.

Yes, Uranium is looking like a precious commodity and Eric Sprott is into it, then I'm interested.
I got some Revolving debt to pay off over the next year.

Thanks @stokjockey

I could have spent my LTC that are in my crypto HODL stack. I may regret not buying the little gold Sycee, for now I have to avoid spending my Crypto savings. If my LTC were $130+/coin I may.

I spent a pleasant Chinese New Year with my Mom, kids, and my siblings. Sorry, I didn't get much chance at getting a few decent photos.

Always, with love 🤗🌺❤️🧧

Stacking some silver from off the beaten track makes for interesting conversation.
I remember seeing Sycee traded as money in a few Kung Fu movies a long time ago. Usually in scenes of gambling houses.
I recall a scene in HERO starring Jet Li as his character is rewarded with trays of silver as reward bounties for eliminating the Emperor's enemies.

Thanks for dropping in @silverd510 🧧

Very nice sis! The bracelet is nice in that you can wear your silver treasure! I have never seen a Sycee before and wonder......does it have a chunky feel to it? I would think that it does.

Both nice pieces for your collection. Thanks for sharing and have a lovely week!🤗💜 !LADY

It's about time I got to show these on the Chinese New Year, while the Year of the Rabbit coins are nice, I thought it cool to share something different. You know I'm fond of real silver bracelets, and this Asian find from Nyssacat fills the bill.

For Sycee, It's small size doesn't give that chunky feeling, I'm sure the larger 1, 2, or 5 Tael sized ones would. I may just plan to get a raw silver sycee from that era but for now I have some Revolving debt to pay off first.

Thanks again for stopping by @elizabethbit 🧧

If you do get a bigger one, take a pic and put something by it so I can king of get a feel for the size and weight of it. That would be cool.

Take care sis! Have a lovely week!💜🤗

She would have Chinese pastries, treats and candy available when I visited her and have those red packets with some cash in them. She passed away in an apartment fire some years ago. She was a hilarious woman.

Very nice I also got one of these silver boats recently, however there is some issue with it but more on that in a way later post

These 'Boat' shaped Sycee are somewhat a peculiar form of money. You can't stack them like coins.
Without further research, I can venture to guess that they were meant to displayed in a show of wealth for onlookers, a status symbol which is consistent with theme of the Chinese god of wealth and prosperity.

Thanks for dropping in @bitcoinman and looking forward to see your silver boat. 🧧

Well also important to get it from a reliable source

I am acutely aware of the huge fakery that is the Chinese market can be. Ben of HK Colonials examines, researches, and tests everything LIVE in real time over the internet. His reputation is valuable to many Western clients, too important to allow any fake coin or artifact to be passed on to any customer, unless someone wants a fake.
Ben did send me a fake 'silver' LTC free.
Listening in on Ben's clients on his Discord, I am dumbfound on the high level of knowledge and scholarship of his clients.

Happy new year! I went to a Chinese lunar new year celebration for the very first time. Was wondering what these "gold boats" were :)

And you got a picture with the god of Wealth and Prosperity too.
The gold sycee is the symbol of wealth and prosperity prominently portrayed in annual lunar New Year's celebrations.
If that gold sycee was real, this poor fellow would have a stiff back this morning. Lol!

I did not know who he was representing! Thank you so much for this information; I've updated my blog post to include the name of Caishen (财神). 🙏

I believe he is part of the Sanxing trio of luck, Fu, Lu, and Shou representing fortune, prosperity and longevity. My grandmother had the three figurines in her home, I thought they were a singing group when I was little.
