Walking Your Dog Without Leaving the Living Room - The Petaverse
Do you love dogs [or even (ugh) cats]? But you live in an apartment where no pets are allowed. Well, now you can own a dog to walk, play with, etc., without even leaving your living room. Just purchase an NFT with your favorite breed and move it onto the metaverse.
But say you do own a physical 'best friend' and want to spend as much doggo time as possible. Well, scan your dog and let him/her join you in your metaverse exploits.
The COVID pandemic ushered in a groundswell in interest in acquiring a furry friend - both physically and in the metaverse. The COVID lockdowns created a need in people for 'company' to pass the time of day. But this begs the question, will this stick or is it merely a pandemic fad?
Projects such as ClassicDoge are betting this trend is here to stay. ClassicDoge has been around since November 2021 with its goal to blend the physical world with the digital world. This project allows users to scan their pet and create a tokenized three dimensional rendering of the pet which permits the pet to join you in the metaverse.
Consider this use. You own a dog you absolutely adore. But the dog is aging. By using ClassicDoge, you can scan your best friend, and after the passage of time, you can still take your dog for a walk in the metaverse even though the dog has passed away.
Web traffic referencing pets peaked on Open Sea in October, 2021. Since then, however, this number has significantly dropped. In a similar fashion, searches for NFT pets peaked on Open Sea in October with a consistent downward trend since. Accordingly, only time will tell if the market will support pet tokenization and moving pets to the metaverse.
Although not in as realistic of a format, the concept of a 'virtual pet' is far from new. Remember the late 1990's and early 2000's - Tamagotchi was the rave. Maybe the present idea of adding your physical pet to the metaverse will gain traction and become a welcome addition to the emerging metaverse culture.
