When I was younger, I had really clear skin which was kind of expected because everyone in my family also did, due to this factor, I didn’t exactly have to do much for my skin to thrive, it simply just did.

How my skin looked when I was younger.

While other teenagers were going through puberty and experiencing acne, I was having the time of my life, but, this was more a curse than a blessing in the long run.

Why do I say it was a curse? Well, because my skin was clear, I didn’t get to learn anything about skincare and I practically abused my skin by using detergent on certain days to wash my face.

I spent years doing whatever I wanted to my skin and since it was still clear, it didn’t matter to me that was until I had to travel to another state to serve my country.

Traveling to a state that had a higher sun intensity showed me that there were flaws in my skincare and it didn’t take long before it was evident that I was doing something wrong.

The first mistake I made at this point was not purchasing sunscreen; I had never thought that dark-skinned people needed sunscreen and I always heard about how our melanin protected us from the sun but, It was wrong and I paid dearly for it.

Before long, I started experiencing sunburn, and my complexion changed which was alarming to me, but I didn’t know what to do.

Finally, after much consideration, I decided to get a lotion with sunscreen which wasn’t ideal because all it did was damage my skin more since it wasn’t made for the face.

At that point, I gave up on caring for my skin and simply just let it be but then the bumps and acne came with full force.

This was awful because having acne out of the blues messed with my self-esteem and I acted erratically while looking for a solution.

When I searched online, the only solutions I saw were “home remedies”; I wouldn’t advise anyone to use these because most times, they can cause more harm than good.

Anyways, after a while of trying different remedies, I decided that I wouldn’t anymore because they weren’t working.

I continued suffering with my skin issues until I came across a YouTuber who spoke about having a skincare regimen, she spoke about how body lotions and soaps shouldn’t be used on the face because the skin on the face was more sensitive than that of the money.

She also emphasized on products to use for your face and the importance of active ingredients like vitamin c, retinoid, etc.

After learning about this, I began trying to perfect my own skincare regimen and the process has been difficult but here is what I have learned.

How my skin looks now.

WHAT I HAVE LEARNED TRYING TO GET A SKINCARE REGIMEN

  1. Sunscreen is very important in every skincare regimen because, without it, your skin will be exposed to the sun which isn’t good.
  2. What works for A might not work for B, so while trying to create a regimen, you need to be intentional.
  3. Your skincare routine doesn’t have to be very dramatic and you can simply use a few products and get a good result.
  4. Your skin needs time to get used to a new product so you shouldn’t expect immediate results.
  5. You should research about adding an active ingredient to your skincare routine because it can be what you need to turn things around.

FINALLY,

My skincare journey has been a difficult one and even now, I am not where I want to be but, I am learning and growing.

I am grateful for this community that was created for skincare because I know I will learn a lot here.

All five lessons listed are valid. Product prostitution does more harm than good.

I wish I started using sunscreen when I was younger. It's been a lifesaver even when I only ever apply once a day. I don't come home looking like I went to fight.

Welcome to this Skin and Body Care community 😊.

Many of us are mistaken and believe that sunscreen should only be used if we go to the beach and it is not so, UV rays are stronger every day because of the damage in our ozone layer, protect our skin from them is important, especially the facial skin. I also made this mistake for years and I did not use it as I should and I am thin and white skin.

Those steps you mention are important, especially the one you say that we don't need so many products because it is true, many people think that they should invest too much and therefore leave for later the care of their skin, when to begin to moisturize it is only necessary to consume a lot of water, wash it morning and night or as many times as necessary and that is very economical.

Best regards to you 🤗

Thank you so much for the welcome.

The crazy part is even with me using sunscreen, I didn't realize that even when I was indoors I needed to use it.

There are so many skincare rules I am learning as I grow older and I have figured that being minimalist with skincare is way better than packing loads of rubbish.
