The Evolution Of Music; Then Vs Now
Recently, I and my friends were talking about a popular Nigerian artist named Tiwa Savage who released a new song titled “Koo Koo fun” and this song has been a source of jokes in the Nigerian space.
Most people talking about the song often compared her recent style of music with her former and it leads them to ask the question of what changed.
Did this talented artist just decide to start singing what most consider rubbish or was there something else behind this change?
Well, personally, I believe that the reason behind this change is due to the evolution of music which is expected.
Over the years, we have seen music evolve due to each generation, and with this change or evolution, most artists try their best to keep up so that they can remain relevant.
Now I am not saying that every evolution of music is good but it is unavoidable at this point and we have to go with it when it happens.
If you study each artist properly, you would realize that even the ones you feel like are the same have a slight change that you might not have noticed.
Looking at artists like Beyonce and even Bruno Mars, their music has evolved with the times and they no longer focus on ballads and R&B like they use to.
So, you might be asking what you can do when your favorite artist evolves and you don't enjoy their music?
To be honest, I don't exactly have this problem because my favorite artist even though she has changed a bit, hasn't changed much and I still enjoy her evolution.
So, if yours has changed drastically, well, you can either try to enjoy their change or find a new artist who resonates with you; trust me when I say there are so many amazing newcomers.
Finally, Then vs Now; is the then always better?
I wouldn't say the Then is always better but in most cases, it is due to what is trending now.
Before now, we use to have a lot of songs based on emotions and where lyrics were a priority but now, it is mostly for the sale of sex but this is just my opinion.
In conclusion
Music is always going to evolve and change and at this point, I feel like we should definitely be expecting worse to come.
You are absolutely right, music keeps evolving and it's natural for these artists to change but it becomes a problem when they change for the worst.
Personally I don't really like having favorite artists because I just love music but seeing that there's this particular artist I always love his or her songs, I can just add them to my favorites.
Music is wide and more new things are coming in every day, we just have to keep appreciating the ones we like.
Welll, you are different not having a favorite artist; I personally have a bunch and they are my go to for music.
Anyways change is good when it is good but most these days are for bad.
Exactly, I have a bunch of favorites, hahaha, so I can't really say one is my favorite, lolz.
That's just the truth 😢.
This is true, I get it.
Yeah 😁😁.
Thats tru my friend @khaleesii especially when you go through their videos and even lyrics. But not to blame them because thats what the generation and era enjoys seeing and listening to.
I have already been seeing the worse i guess because the current evolution of music is completely something else when you see the new guys like asake and the rest but well, most other people do enjoy maybe its just me. You have done a good write @khaleesii
Well, it still depends on who you are listening to, there is a lot of good artists out there.
Also, Nigerian music has always almost been like this for me; not something I listen to.
Thank you so much for reading
Hi @khaleesii. You have written an enlightening piece and I agree with you. Nothing remains the same forever. When my favourite artists evolve, I continue with them unless their lyrics don't make sense anymore. 😃 It's all about the lyrics for me.
