The Play2Earn Report - New Year's Edition

avatar

So it's finally 2021 and that hated last year is finally lying behind us. To tell the truth though, the last year certainly was one of my best. Now don't get me wrong here, I'm as annoyed with this whole Covid-19 nonsense as everybody else, but in terms of financial development I've had a great year. My holdings in the blockchain world have now surpassed my holdings in the conventional world. And that's not because I've lost money in the "real" world. Things are certainly looking pretty good in that regard and if I play my cards right this year, I should be in for some amazing returns at the end of this bull market. But this is the Play2Earn Report, so let's get back to that topic!

As always, let's take a look at my different coins first:

TokenAmountIncrease
Hive6,19036
LEO5,255196
LBI2,000-
SPT35,387438
XTM2,421-

I was debating a while whether to integrate XTM into the list or not but ultimately decided to do it. XTM is the native token to Torum. While strictly speaking it's not a game, it offers enough gamification to warrant appearing on the list IMO. If you haven't heard about Torum yet, you might want to check this article I've did a couple of days ago. Long story short, it's basically Crypto Facebook and in my opinion, the potential is immense. The token will be sold at 0.05$ each in their IEO Pre-Sale so that would be 121$ right there. Not bad for roughly 10 days of entertaining chit-chat...

Other than that, I've switched to powering up LEO again and that came with a nice boost to my Leo Power. I've powered up 196 in a mere 5 days and I intend to move all income from my games to LeoFinance until the coming airdrop has happened. Even without any further information available yet, I expect this airdrop to be a huge earning opportunity and every LEO powered up can only help!

Now let's move on to the games I'm playing:

Splinterlands

This last season was a real struggle for me. I didn't manage too many games during the holidays and so I had to battle through the whole last day of the season to get back to Champion I. I managed to do so eventually and ended the season on #57. It probably would have been a top 50 slot if I had seen it through, but I was too spent after getting to Champion I so I took the risk of not moving further and well, it didn't pay off. I used the Splinter Stats Season Report Card for the first time and admittedly, this gave me some great insight into what I've been doing right and what I've been doing wrong.

splinterlands.png

The very obvious takeaway for me has been that I need to pay more attention to what I'm doing. This may sound silly, but hear me out. I've been doing my daily quest each day for several seasons now as all but my water splinter are strong enough to win games, even in Champion I. That's only half of the story, though. I'm really strong in Fire and Life, everything else is more situational, though. I have a great counter to Magic in Death for example, but it's not strong enough in many other rulesets. Now what I've been doing was just grinding the quest until I completed it, using the required splinter all the time instead of going with my best splinter for the individual ruleset. In hindsight, this cost me a lot of rating and also a lot of DEC.

So from here on, I'll try to pay more attention to each match-up, only working towards my quest when doing so is the best choice available to me. I play the game so much that it really shouldn't matter if I finish a quest after 5 or after 50 games. This should help to get me to Champion I a lot sooner this season and should also fix my somewhat bad win rate. We'll see how it goes from here.

I've also picked up the habit of buying a couple of summoners each day. As I have explained in this article, I expect demand for summoners to spike with the release of the land expansion. Because of that, a portion of my daily DEC is now always used to buy more summoners from the market. I feel like this is a pretty safe bet. Even if I'm wrong with my forecast, these summoners are very unlikely to be worth less any time soon.

While I'd obviously wished I had learned about Splinterlands in 2018 instead of 2020, I'm still pretty happy with how my collection is looking after my first year. It's net worth is a lot higher than what I've invested into the game. Yes there are issues, yes it's still a lot of work, but boy it's just such an entertaining and rewarding game!

Ocean Planet

The first new game to be released on Hive in 2021 and one I'm really looking forward to play. It's another game coming from the Cryptex24 guys so the same good people that are already doing Cryptobrewmaster and that alone instills a lot of confidence that it's going to be another amazing title. In case you haven't heard of the game yet, I've done an article with all information available so far last week.

Untitled.png

As you can see above, I've picked up the Fishbone character for 10 HBD. He can breathe under water and in a game called Ocean Planet that has to be useful in some way! The game will start tonight so in case you want to get anything from the pre sale you still have some hours left to get the card(s) you want. I'll certainly get back to you with an Is It Worth Your Time?-style article as soon as I had a chance to test it.

Rising Star

Rising Star now officially started to use it's reward pool. Actually, they even started a day earlier than announced and thus sent out the first rewards on December 31st already. I've bought my second 12-pack for 100,000 Starbits but sadly missed the opportunity to get another Mozart as they were all gone when I made the purchase. Nevertheless, I've found some cool new cards and also had an Epic instrument this time around. Fun enough, this brings back some memories from last fall. Once again, I'm starting to have too much luck, so drunk fans are messing with my ego. For now, I'll keep buying 12-packs but eventually I'll need to handle the situation with more targeted buying of single cards.

Untitled.png

I've climbed up to rank #41 already and should be able to buy another 12-pack tomorrow which should bring me up another few ranks. The Starbits price is also slowly recovering and has already moved up to 10,000 Starbits = 4 Hive again. If it gets closer to it's soft peg, I might consider trading my Starbits for Hive and buy the 12-pack that way. That would have the added benefit of receiving a Beethoven on top of my packs.

Untitled.png

With Starbits price as low as it was there haven't been to many purchases made with Hive so there's no rush for me here, as long as the price stays below 4.5 Hive per 10,000 Starbits I'll just keep buying my packs with Starbits. I do have a feeling we'll get back to the peg eventually, though.

Another crazy thing to note is that there are absolutely no cards below 1,000 Starbits left on the market. Even Fan Boost 1 cards are going for 1,500 Starbits and more now. The introduction of the rewards pool certainly was a smart move and I feel like Rising Star is bound to have an amazing 2021!

Cryptobrewmaster

Not too much news on Cryptobrewmaster this week. I'm reaping my weekly rewards from the wealthy Brewmaster event and keep building my referrals. Speaking of which, I've found another 8 referrals this week and now am looking at a total of 312 players brought to the game. I have only 2 claims ahead of me before I've finished all referral rewards in the game right now. I'm sure @rollie1212 is going to add more eventually, though, so I'm not worried about that at all. It certainly helps that the ingredients I claim from the referral rewards are all masterpieces right now - talk about some massive value in that program!

The next updates should also introduce artifacts and building NFTs to the game finally bringing some permanent progression to Cryptobrewmaster. That's not to say that I don't feel like the economy is brilliantly crafted but I know many players are yearning for some notable progression within in the game so this is certainly going to be another huge step in the right direction. Much like with Rising Star, I feel like 2021 is going to be an amazing year for Cryptobrewmaster. #hivegaming is the future!

eXode

Speaking of amazing years. We certainly have an exciting year ahead of us for eXode with a lot of the features coming together, colonization finally starting and permanence coming to the game. It's been pretty quiet around the game during the holidays and I feel like that was well deserved. With these days behind us, though, things are bound to heat up again pretty soon.

dCity

It feels like I've hit a bit of a wall in terms of progression in dCity. My daily SIM income is completely reinvested into the game but currently, this only suffices to keep my position at around #350 in the ranking. I'll give it another week or two before pulling the plug but if things don't change, I might try another infusion of Hive from some of my other games to get things going again.

Untitled.png

The last president also had extremely high taxes which certainly did not help my growth either. Luckily, it's back to only 8.5% now so maybe that's already enough go get some growth going again.

Conclusion

And that's all from me for today. Hope you had a great New Year's Eve and to all of you - have a wonderful year 2021. We'll eventually get over Corona and if the bull market does what we all expect it to do, we are bound for an amazing end of the year! Thank you all for reading and see you next time!

You certainly are a great example for the grind that is possible with crypto in general and Hive in particular. 2020 was mostly passive and semi-passive earnings on Hive platforms for me. Still, it was probably my most fun year on this platform. So much has happened and most of it was actually pretty good. It even eclipsed January 2018, when I briefly earned over 20k USD per week on here. Not financially - obviously - but in terms of building a foundation and enjoying myself.

Wow, that must have been some crazy times, let's see what happens on the high of this cycle's bull market.
And I agree, it feels like we are building the foundation for something big here - both with Hive/LeoFinance and with Splinterlands that is. Great times are ahead of us!
