Sleepless Nights Off-World (World Building Notes)

For this prompt, I'm going to try something a little bit different. Usually, I write them in different sections, each covering a range of topics that stem, or connect to the main topic of the prompt. I rarely write from the perspective of a character, and instead try to write as if this information is being read from an encyclopedia, as opposed to being spoken from a person. (I have experimented with that style before, in a post too far back to scroll.) So, I decided to try it again.

Has anybody seen those videos circulating, which are mainly Reddit posts, spoken in a robot voice? Each story on a channel I found on YouTube, seems to be many different authors, who all use the exact same style. Also, nearly all of the stories are sci-fi space operas. They've gained popularity, and I enjoy listening to them sometimes, so I was thinking of trying to replicate that similar style with these posts.

Here's A Link To The World Building Prompt If You'd Like To Check It Out.

Here's A Link To The Channel I Was Talking About If You'd Like To Check It Out Too.

I have no idea where they're getting this content, but the videos seem to do well view-wise, and in the past 9 months they have uploaded about 700 videos. They say they're all from different writers, but they all seem far too similar to be written by multiple authors.

Imis Dentis - Chemicals For Sleepless Nights

Sleepless nights? How could one possibly find time to sleep in the territory known as Free Space?

I sleep when my body physically can't go one step further, or when my brain can't possibly process one more thought. There is far too much wonder in all directions of this galaxy to feel the need to sleep.

To satisfy the query, however, I'll do my best to recount some remedies for a sleepless night. Of course, there are many chemical options to help someone out.

The Humans have pretty little pills; tiny things. Deep Sleep they call it. They're usually white, but I have seen them vary in colour. Usually, if they ingest one of them, the medication takes effect within the hour. I've even met Humans who do their best to fight the sleep after ingesting because it gets them high; the pills seem to have the opposite effect then. Deep Sleep they call it.

Most other races of Free Space need a higher dose of this medication. There are other races though with a completely different biological makeup, who are not affected in the slightest by Deep Sleep.

The Triskani need something more potent, which is known commonly as Tranq - Triskani speech is a difficult language to replicate. They come in the form of small palm-sized vials that need to be injected. Some people have taken to manufacture their own version of that drug, and it has the street name Tranquility.

Fog is another name for it, because when you take it, the user experiences a deep haze, as though they are looking through a veil fabric. The sensation described is complete numbness of the body and sense, while your mind wanders free. Rotchnok, or New Trisk as it's now known is where Tranquility comes from. Due to lacking supplies, or clean workspaces, most batches are tainted these days, and the drug has turned into an epidemic among most worlds.

Classic Fog was clean, and - if taken recreationally - could be a benefit. But, with the rise of Triskani crime lords, and organisations, there was something of a competition among them all, to produce batches quickly by cutting corners, and many even tampered with the compound itself to create something highly addictive.

Imis Dentis - Doshan Nights

Most worlds have something for people to do, regardless of whether it is night or day.

My homeworld of Dosha is somewhere that one may try to stay awake so they can experience the world that comes alive when the sun descends.

There is one particular creature of my home world that only comes out at night, and its magnificent size can block out our three moons as it passes overhead. The Great Abuwi, or Nag'inus Abuwi, roughly translates to The Great Mother of Dosha.

The idea of her fell into myth and legend, even though many held the belief for a great time, it was commonly believed that the stories of this creature were nothing more than folklore, or perhaps a metaphor created by our ancestors.

She did appear though, during the occupation, where the Doshan people and the world as a whole cried in unison. Our warriors fought in small confrontations, but the pinnacle of our fight was The Day of Night, where gunfire from the ground and overhead lit up the darkness.

The gunfire fell silent, and for a moment the moons were gone. A great wind rose. I saw it, with my own eyes. Every Doshan warrior spoke the same words. Nag'inus Abuwi, and we were spared her fury.

She struck a Confederation cruiser, and it wasn't one of the small ones. It was an I.O-65 - Flagship, which housed the director of the Doshan campaign. Within a few seconds flat The Great Abuwi fell the vessel, and it halted all aggression.

The troops scattered, and the fleets retreated from our star system. But, within a few days, our cheers turned to fire in our throats. A new director emerged from beyond our stars. They laid down fire and caused The Dark Spot.

Our lush green world was left with a scar in the form of black sand; a constant reminder of our lost war. The pain inflicted on our world was physically felt by every Doshan, and it was after that we suffered disease for the first time.

Even these years since then, the pain is felt.

While on Dosha, I stay awake each night, in the hopes that I might see her again.

Very interesting your science fiction and galactic stories, we could say, with a certain apocalyptic tone. Greetings, @killerwot.

Hey, thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it. This world I've been building and writing in for a while is set in a post-intergalactic war, so society as a whole is kind of crawling back from the wreckage. It's futuristic, but where tech was once abundant, now it's in short supply, and many people have to do whatever they can to survive and make money.

Excellent stories - you should write more first person ones !

HFY is a huge genre on Reddit/YouTube, but you're right, I reckon a lot of them have been written by AI and are narrated by AI voices. Probably the best human reader is Netnarrator.

But if you want to go down a real internet rabbithole, look up Stabby the Space Roomba. There's so much been added by Reddit users that it's hard to find the original story, but most of it is absolutely hilarious.

What does HFY stand for? I assumed it was created with AI, just based on how similar all of these stories read, and it always poses Humans as the biggest threat in the galaxy, or the most alien thing in the galaxy.

It's not bad by any stretch, but I've just noticed these similarities. But, if it's a trope of this particular style or genre it makes sense then that all of these authors write the same way.

I've never heard of that, but I'm going to look it up now and see if I can find. Based on the title I think I'll like it.

Also, thanks, I'd like to try and replicate the same first person style of those others stories for future posts. I think they have a little bit more weight to them when they're told from someones perspective.

I love the style choice! Those videos are neat. A lot of them are AI voice and AI content, but they have a lot of charm!
