The Confederation's Space Station, Haven (World Building Notes)

I've actually had an idea for a space station floating around, which hasn't been featured yet in any of the current stories. But, it will be coming into the book soon! If you would like to write about a space station or an idea for your worlds that you may have, Here's A Link To The Most Recent World Building Post.

Haven
The idea for Haven was that it was a huge prison station, in a way. Originally built just before the Invasion of Free Space as a mobile base that the Confederation could make repairs to their cruisers and re-group and re-organise their fleets.

This leads many people to believe that the occupation of Free Space had been planned for a while and that the Gnosian raid was only an excuse and the reason The Confederation was waiting for.

As the attempted occupation lasted longer than originally expected, the Confederation started taking POWs back to Haven, in order to interrogate them and learn information about each planet, so the minds at the top would have a better understanding of each world, for their second or third assaults.

As the occupation carried on, they couldn't release these prisoners as most would have been high-value targets and warlords. The Rotchi started using the space station as an engineering hub, where they created and crafted some devastating weaponry. It is also rumoured that the Rotchi scientists tested their new weapons on the prisoners, but, these rumours have never been proven. The general consensus around Free Space is that the rumours are true and that is yet another reason for the hatred the Rotchi encounter on every Free Space planet they visit.

The Catastrophe
At some point around the middle of the Occupation, there was a mishap at the station. Some say there was a revolt and the prisoners staged an uprising, some say that it was some new weapon the Rotchi were testing.

The fact of the matter is, the catastrophe was devastating and blew chunks of the station out into space, killing a lot of its personnel and prisoners alike. It was rebuilt soon after, from there on, however, Haven was seen as a life sentence if you were to be assigned to it.

The garrisons of Haven wanted to get off it so badly after the rebuilding efforts, that most would make themselves sick on purpose, just to be sent on leave from the military.

"One of the benefits of these Rotchi labs is how easy it is to get your hands on non-lethal material. You just gotta know what not to drink." - Anonymous Ex-Haven Guard.

Haven After The Occupation
After the occupation ended and all of the fleets came back home to Confederation space, there was no need for Haven anymore and the prisoners were costing too much money to keep there, but, they knew too much to be released back into Free Space.

One of the Brigadiers who came back to the station after the war had an idea though, one which he pitched to the leaders of the Inner Sanctum.

"Why let something so valuable go to waste? The options before us seem to be, tearing it down, or leaving it to go derelict. Before we know it, squatters will move in and that'll be the end of it." - Brigadier Runish, speaking with the heads of the Inner Sanctum.

He pitched the idea of re-fitting and re-purposing the whole facility, turning it into the largest recycling/ engineering/ dock in the known galaxy.

With all of the leftovers of the war. Ships that were beyond repair, weaponry that never got to see combat, and an unending workforce of Free Space hostages. It seemed like a no-brainer. Haven became a forced labour station and all of the prisoners became workers and the unemployed soldier were given a chance to continue working, as guards.

The Rotchi
After the war, the Rotchi weren't needed anymore and they returned to Free Space. Some spoke out about the facility and there was an assault on Haven led by one of the largest underworld gang in Free Space, at the time.

The Blue Clip was a syndicate that formed on the capital planet of Free Space known as Jex. Their tentacles spread quickly throughout the galaxy and during the occupation they quickly became a big thorn in The Confederation's side and they aided many Free Space worlds in defending against attacks.

The leader of this group was seen as an extremely high-value target and soon he was captured. The Blue Clip assumed he had been killed. But, when the Rotchi informed them about Haven, what was left of the organisation rallied and assaulted the station. It failed and any of the survivors were taken as prisoners too, very few members made it back to Free Space. Some who did are hard to trust, as saying you were a part of that assault or The Blue Clip, in general, is a good way of boosting your street cred.

The gang was destroyed after that and they left behind a power vacuum that gave rise to many of the organisation operating today.

No one ever attempted an assault on Haven again and most don't even believe it now. The majority of people, think about Haven as nothing more than a symbol of Confederation power, or as a horror story.

Very cool bit of worldbuilding. Haven sounds like it was a nightmare for a lot of poor folks on both sides.

Yeah absolutely, I like the idea of it being an all round bad place to work or be, in general.

I have an idea some chapters surrounding the place which I think will be pretty sick.
