The Six Foot Room - Part 6

Source

An older man, with good posture, a strong jaw, and a fitted suit strode into the room. Everyone seemed to stare blankly at him as he passed by the crowds, making a direct course to Jaym's. Behind the man was a small ensemble of multiple different people, dressed similarly, although, they weren't quite as sharp.

"Minder-227-A, you allowed this ALC out of their vision area, and into a restricted zone." He said as he glanced behind him. As one of his many minions started to tap some input into their small data pad, the director turned back. His eyes rolled over Jaym's and then past him.

"Sir, effected immediately, Minder-227-A has been demoted." The person - who had furiously typed - said.

"Good." The director replied. "You are not permitted to be on this premises, make your way to the assignment centre, for something more fitting your new level."

The escort hurried passed them, and Jaym's caught a glance at his face. It was pale white, and the expression he wore was that of only death. His eyes were hollow already, and he moved like he was being controlled by forces unseen. There was no thought behind his steps, and his movement in general seemed robotic.

"Now then, we only have to find a suitable punishment for you ALC-091723-J, what are we to do with you?" The director said in a surprisingly warm voice.

"My name is Jaym's, and I refuse to respond to anyone who doesn't address me as such."

"I know who you are Mr. Headridge."

Jamy's was unsure about this man and knew for a certainty that he had never interacted with, or even seen the director before. He settled his mind slightly, as he figured he must be so good at his job that he could recall all of the names of people who called this false reality, home.

"I can tell by the look in your eyes that you don't remember me, and you're also wondering how I know you by your full name." The director said as he turned to slowly walk out of the room. "Please, follow me."

Jaym's followed the man and was flanked by the small mob of people who seemed to escort the director. The halls were sterile, neat, and utterly devoid of any type of life. This place wasn't meant for humans. It reminded him very much of the corridor he walked to leave his room.

They passed by many doors, and some of them were open a jar. Within each, there were people talking, working, or enjoying the use of their headsets. None seemed to notice the small parade marching the halls, but then again, why would they? How could anyone be pulled from their duty, or fake beauty long enough to take any notice of their surroundings?

The path ahead seemed to stretch on forever, turning one corner would lead to yet another sprint of space. It was all the same, and Jaym's felt disorientated by it. There was no deviation from the layout.

Soon, the director came to a halt and opened a door. "Leave us, I would speak with Mr. Headridge alone."

"Sir, it goes against our policy to leave you unattended." One of the small voices said.

"You could be at risk." Another added.

"Hah, I'm sure I should be on my guard," the director said as he glanced back at Jaym's. "I'll be careful."

Jaym's couldn't help himself and had to crack a slight smile. In his day he may have put up a good fight, and while he still felt capable, he knew he didn't have the strength in him to pose any threat to the man in front of him.
