Uncharted Space (World Building Notes)

There has been a topic of conversation on my mind for some time now, I really have no idea whether or not I'll go with this idea, but I do really like it and would be interested in seeing if I could do something like it for my world.

Uncharted Space
There is a large region of space in the world I write my stories in, and this region isn't really explained in the book.

In the mainline series, there is a story following a Confederation recruit who takes on a job aboard an experimental ship kitted out with specialised equipment in order to chart this region, which before this ship was unveiled, they weren't able to do.

While he is out here, the ship goes missing, as many ships have done in the past. They also cannot find the ship or get any response from them, with no contact the scientists are baffled and the only explanation for this phenomenon is that solar flares or solar winds have interrupted the ships and perhaps left the ships fried by EMPs. But, there is no concrete understanding or information, so there are left with no choice but to forget about the missing ships, as sending more people in isn't an option.

The Gnosians
This monstrous alien race is as harsh as the planet they hail from, and is the main reason for the conflict between The Confederation and Free Space, as the Gnosians started to raid colony worlds.

When the war broke out, the Gnosians fled into the uncharted zone on mass and were essentially never heard from again. They still exist in the world, but the majority of them fled.

In the mainline book, Cutter and his crew make a jump with a dodgy engine but have no choice as they are being pursued by pirates. The Jump Lane closes halfway through their journey, and they end up in the Uncharted Zone.

They send out an SOS, knowing the risks they do so with no choice, as they don't know if the engineers are able to repair the ship's engines. Some Gnosians come across the SOS and find the ship, there is a battle, but before they can board the engines are repaired enough to do another jump.

This is risky, however, as it's extremally hard for the ship's navigation computer to calculate their journey, because of the strange phenomenon that happens in Uncharted Space.

What's In There?
This is where I'm at, it's such a vast area, which nobody enters willingly, bar the Gnosians; for whatever reason.

One thing I've been thinking about for this zone is a parasitic lifeform. But, an intelligent one that takes over its host, keeping them alive as some kind of living nest/ slave. While living in this host, the worms are able to multiply and infect other people slowly. That's a general idea anyway, but they're intelligent, confined to the planets they can reach, however, the fact that it's hard to navigate this area without a navigation system, they have been locked down on whatever planets they reached.

Now, here's the thing, these parasites don't need a host, so they're not exactly a parasite. They are basically a worm-like alien race, which uses the bodies of others. When their victims die, they can stay animated with the help of these creatures... until they decompose. At that point, they just become fertilizer for the worm population to boom.

Why Is The Uncharted Zone, Uncharitable?
Well, here's the thing, in ancient times, this species was discovered and as a defensive measure, large beacons were erected on moons, planets, and even asteroids.

With these beacons in place scrambling all Navigation Charts and Systems, it's impossible for this parasite to reach new planets. This happened so long ago, that none of the current races in the universe remember.

The issue. The Gnosians, are warlike and stupid, there is a strong chance that they have discovered this species and are thinking of ways to weaponize them, or even worse than that, they may have discovered these beacons, or The Confederation could discover these beacons and if they decided to start destroying them, opening entire regions of the universe up for colonization, they could unwittingly release a dormant parasite which could quickly devour the universe.

Religion
There is one ancient religion I was working on, which in the current timeline, they are a secret society of murderers. Their belief is that there is a Galactic soul eater monster, who will eat enough souls one day that it will burst and create a new universe, wiping away the old.

This Doomsday cult is trying to make this happen, and in doing so they make sacrifices for it. But, this religion is actually misinterpreted. It's not about a creature that eats souls and will create a new universe, it's actually about this parasite, which could one day devour every lifeform in the galaxy and end it all.

That's some interesting stuff. Is all this I have read and commented on part of the same story or totally different stories all together? Either way you seem to have a lot of material to work with. 👍👍👍

Yeah, it's all part of the same universe, so far I've written a novel here on Hive based in it and I've been working on a lot of stand alone short stories also set in the same worlds. I've created a lot of lore and worldbuilding thanks to these short stories and the world building prompts.

I'm glad you're enjoying what you've read, I've been having a lot of fun creating it.

This is really good stuff ! So if the beacons were erected to stop the parasite from spreading and infecting new worlds, it suggests that the parasite itself must have some form of interstellar travel and the ability to navigate. Which makes me wonder how that happened - if it's not a natural evolutionary path, were they a species engineered as a doomsday weapon in some ancient apocalyptic war between forgotten (or parasitised) species ?

Also, I'd love to find out more about how the beacons are powered, how they have kept working for so long without maintenance, what kind of automatic defences they have, and what happens when they finally wear out ? Will they wear out soon, or are we lucky enough that it's still many galactic revolutions away ? Assuming the Gnosians don't just nerf them in their stupidity.....

So many intriguing things about this, and so many possible stories, it's awesome !

(Edited)

The way I was thinking of them as a species, they're essentially a hive minded wormish alien who are able to work individually, reproducing asexually. So one of these things could be a problem for any planet they land on, even squashing them may kill the one, but they have many eggs that can lay dorment for years if they have to.

So, the idea for intersteller travel was that they have the knowledge of travel, they understand how to pilot and stuff, but their form doesn't allow for it, which has led them down an evolutionary path where they take control of a host capable of being used - lets say they find an animal, they would really only use it for fertilizer to expand and feed their colony, walking it to their nesting grounds - whereas, if they find a human, as it's a valuable host, they would utilise them to construct whatever they need, the process would be slow but they would gladly take the time to do it.

They're intellegent, so lets say they reach a planet, they won't eat everything available, they'll plan and take what they need to swell their numbers, then strike fast. When they attack they would decimate the planets population quickly, say humans for example, they know we'd be a threat, so they focus on us. While we're a threat we're also useful as a tool, so they would farm us in a way once our numbers reach a more managable number, everything else would be seen as fertilizer to them but they'd keep enough creatures around to farm for food.

As for the beacons, my idea was that these machines are maintained by androids of some kind who also repair themselves and eachother when they need to. Or, maybe the people who installed them designed infinite power supplies in the form of Dysonsphere-like machines that use a few suns in this region of space. Or it could be a mix of both.

It's interesting and I'd really like to work on expanding these ideas, I have an idea for a story following a small crew who voyage into uncharted space and find these creatures. Also, I'm not even sure of the name, I call it Uncharted Space, but I used to call it Dark Space. Infact, before choosing the name Off-World for the series I was thinking of calling it Dark Space.

I kind of like the idea of having a character driven story with small stakes for the most part, where everyone thinks The Confederation are to big baddies who are going to strike again, but no, Space Worms are here now haha

I was reluctant to share my ideas about what's in that region of space because I kind of wanted it to be a surprise but I'm glad I put some of the idea out there.
