TAKING ON RESPONSIBILITY

As a big brother of four, I've always been in the position of looking after my siblings. This responsibility always has me on the go, but when I left my parent's house a bit of that responsibility left too because we no longer see every day plus I am now two states away from home. I'm only called on important occasions or when the conditions at home are taking a toll on my parents. Lately, my sister decided it was high time she took the bold step I took in 2021 and Also found her feet by herself. Being a girl, my parents were concerned about where she would stay and her means of survival, so they thought it best to send her to the only family member who could be trusted to look after her without doubt.

This change so far has taken a toll on me because I now must look after her as I would myself. It also meant I needed to sit up and no longer be as nonchalant as I would if I were to be alone. Before now, I wasn't always worried about my feeding as I could eat anywhere I met food. Oh, I forgot to mention living alone I could choose not to sleep at home at will and I did so a lot of times. But now I can't always leave her feeling lonely at home, so I must be home whenever I'm not at work. Being that I love food and she loves cooking, what else am I looking for outside my house? Except I'm trying to now hustle to put food on the table for two.

I'm currently writing this post on a moving bus back to my family house because I do not know if I will be able to do so when I arrive at Delta State from Port Harcourt after over a year of seeing them. But that's not even the story here. Providing for this journey took a huge deep in my finances as I'm currently drained preparing for the burial of my late grandmother scheduled to be held tomorrow Saturday 23rd March 2024. I had to pull a lot of strings just so my sister could be as comfortable as I could afford 😂. I've been working at my place of work and at the same time doing freelance jobs for clients during the day, writing and playing Splinterlands at night. This has been my routine for almost a month now knowing that my sister would need to look good and presentable when we arrive.

Right now I'm looking like a bag of stress because I needed to fix some pending issues at the office and other stuffs before embarking on this journey. I can't afford to relent, even if I would not do these things for myself on a normal day, I would do it for my only sister because it is what we do for those we love. It's not easy, but it's worth it. I mean if I do not go this length for my sister, who would I do it for at this point in life…

This is such a nice read, taking the bold step is never easy, and I can so relate to stepping up as the eldest to fulfill elder duties, it's not easy, may God see us through.

It's always glad my heart to see elder siblings looking after the younger ones, I know it is not easy but may God always strengthen you and make ways.

I hope that your journey and burial ceremony went well.

Your sister looks cute 😍 have you invited her to hive?

Taking up responsibility isn't an easy task, it drains you financially, physically and if care isn't taken, mentally too. You're really doing great taking care of standing up to your responsibility as the big brother, well done.

I completely agree with you that it is worth it. I have seen my mom and dad open the house for many of their cousins, and nieces and nephews to come down to Bombay to find jobs, or education and it was always a bit of a burden. But they never said no, and most of those who came managed to do very well after using the city as their launchpad. The result is that when my mom goes anywhere she has got people all around who treat her like an elder sister or mother because of her timely help in their lives. That feeling of satisfaction of being a foundation for someone to grow on is very beautiful.

I wish that you keep getting better opportunities so that you can flourish at your best being the leader that you are. Cheers from a fellow #dreemerforlife

Awww... Such a sweet elder brother you are. I can imagine your sister going all around saying "my brother this" and "my brother that".
