My Mountain Top Experience

They say time heals all wounds, and yes, I believe it's true, but I also believe that nature is more of a natural therapy.

I traveled to Ekiti State in the western part of Nigeria for my compulsory one-year National Youth Service program. Truly, I did not know what to expect, as I had not been to this part of Nigeria before. I asked my friends if any of them knew anything about Ekiti, but no one seemed to know anything. I took my phone and Googled about Ekiti. I was impressed with what I read about the place, but seeing is believing.
I went to the market a day before I was to travel and bought all the items I needed. I packed my bags, and I was ready for the 10-hour journey on the road. The day for the journey was here. I woke up around 4 a.m. and had my bath. Off I went to the park, where I met other young people who were traveling for the same national service. I met some other people who were going to Ekiti. We all chatted, but no one seemed to have an idea of what to expect.

Our bus moved from the terminal at 6 a.m., and the journey was an interesting one as we all introduced ourselves and got to know each other. There was a common theme when everyone had his or her own expectations. It was the fear of the unknown. I sat in between a lady and a very young gentleman. Her name was Grace, and the young man's name was Mike. Mike was so young that the other guys started calling him baby Mike.

At about 4 p.m., we had arrived in Ekiti State, and I was so surprised by what I saw. The place was filled with mountains and green vegetation. The air felt different; it was cold and moist. Everyone in the bus brought out their phones and started taking pictures or making videos. I was so going to have fun in Ekiti State.

The three weeks of camping was over, and I was posted to Emure. On getting to Emure, I saw even more mountains, and I was really excited. I went to do the necessary paperwork. I guess who I saw? Grace and Mike. I was happy because I had some people I knew around. We then went to look for an apartment to rent, and we saw one immediately without even stressing ourselves.
It had been three weeks in Ekiti State, and I had started enjoying my stay there. My phone rang, and I picked it up. Matthew, a friend I had known for 12 years, was on the line, and I was happy he was the one. But his voice was shaking. "Matthew, what is the problem?" I asked. He told me one of our mutual friends was dead. Fred had been a close friend for the past ten years, and we were very close. I couldn't believe what I just heard; it was shocking, and I was totally disoriented. I could not eat for days. I was thinking of how a young and vibrant young man will sleep and never wake up.Mike and Grace noticed that I was losing weight, and they became so worried. I told them what the issue was, and they felt sorry for me. And tried everything possible to make me eat.

It was a Saturday morning, and Grace suggested we go for a picnic on one of the mountains. I told them I wasn't interested, but Mike insisted I must come. I had my bath and followed them, uninterested in the conversation they were having. But as we were walking along the path, I heard the birds singing and the leaves dancing. I saw some monkeys jumping from one tree to another. I was captivated by how they were swinging. We got to the top of the mountain. The air was so refreshing, and I felt a sense of calmness. I looked down at the green vegetation around the mountain, and it was so refreshing. We started playing chess, and I was totally enjoying the environment in which I found myself. The calmness of the environment, the cold breeze, and the fresh air were so refreshing. Grace dished out the food we had brought with us. I ate, and I was even asking for more.

After eating, we went down the mountain to a stream that was nearby. The water was so transparent, and I could see fish swimming in it. I loved the movement of the fish. They all moved like they were dancing to the rhythm of a song. We sat by the stream and watched young children swim. I saw happiness in their eyes and how much they enjoyed the nature around them.
I felt like a great burden had been lifted off my shoulders. I started chatting with Mike and Grace. I could see the relief on their faces. I suggested we have another picnic the next weekend. They laughed at me and echoed "We thought you did not want to come for the picnic". I smiled; the experience was refreshing, and I loved every bit of it. It helped me get over the sadness I had earlier.

Nature had healed me, and it was refreshing.

I think I want to go to Ekiti.
You described it so beautifully.

Nature gave you exactly what you needed at a time you didn't even know you did.
The part about death was really scary. Someone just sleeps and doesn't wake up.

I hope you got the healing you needed and I do hope you are still friends with Grace and Mike.

Refreshing mountain air has a way of healing the mind and placating the senses. You suffered a debilitating bereavement, but you were able to emerge from it “whole” due to the help your friends and the mountains. Beautifully related!
