Intentions.

Sitting at the table in the cafeteria. An aura of gawkiness hovered around them. The silence resonated from the eerie behavior of Zury at lunch. Auggie was perturbed by her sudden change In behaviour. He had stopped by several times at her office before lunch and she had looked all fine. Only for him to walk up to her and meet a different Zury from the one he met earlier. He enquired to know what was wrong but she repeatedly gave him the same answer.

"I'm alright," she said.

"But you don't look it, you do not look okay" Auggie adjusted from his position and rubbed his curly hair with his hands. He was tensed " Look Zury, we have known each other for some months now and I can tell by sniffing my fingers that something is wrong"

Zurry wondered why he was so concerned about her. Of Course that has been his usual manner. The ever caring and kind Auggie. But at this point it was not helping. How was she going to let him know that he is the reason behind the argument she had with their other colleague and her good friend Sally. It seems easy but at the same time tough. But what isn't tough in today's world

Sally was the only one Auggie was close to in their office. Sally had been in love with Auggie ever since he started working with them. Sally on several occasions has told her how she has a crush on Auggie and wouldn't mind making babies with him..

She let her mind drift from the milky skinned man sitting before her to the eye catching fountain running in the middle of the cafeteria that gave it this relaxing look. The fountain which was made in the form of a boulder rock that sits gloriously on the arm like structure. She wasn't sure if the boulder had a map of Africa and Europe beautifully carved on it. But she could tell she saw a map. She wondered what the artist's intentions were.

Then it struck her. Intentions, that was the question she needed to ask Auggie. What are his intentions towards her? Towards their friendship?.

She moved her seat further back and withdrew her hands from Auggie. Then she asked.

"I feel like our relationship is getting beyond what it was. I mean you are a nice guy and good friend. We spend most of the time together. You buy me gifts." she paused and stared at Auggie " I can tell from your movements that this isn't just a mere old time buddies friendship. Auggie, what are your intentions towards me?"

Auggie flinched, then shrugged his shoulders. He smiled and relaxed on his chair. He had this smirk on his face, he always does.

He pondered on her question. He wasn't a man to be caught off guard. Truly he wasn't caught off guard by the question but he was surprised that even when he had made his intentions known to Zury several times she hadn't grabbed a hint from it all.

He looked down to his feet, there were tiny ants marching in an orderly procession with crumbs of bread which had fallen from their table. He let them walk a few distance before dispersing them with his feet.

Why was she being childish? Why was she acting like she doesn't know what he wants? He was not in love with her and did even care. He was just about his career. He just needed her to recommend him to their board of directors tomorrow for the promotion. In Fact he is not and will never be the one for love. He is focused more on his career. He needs to prove his dad wrong that he can still become successful in life. He wants his face on the weekly business magazine. He wants fast cars and a penthouse. He wants the glory.

He had noticed the competition between him and his opponent and knew he stood little chance of getting the promotion ahead of him (opponent). In fact his opponent was more qualified for a promotion. Having known all this he decided to devise a means to outsmart his opponent. Since Zury is the one who was to recommend for their promotion he needed her to be on his side hence the reason he started getting close to her. But it bothered him that at this point she didn't know his intentions yet but thinks he is in love with her

"You wanna know my intentions?" He asked

Zury nodded.

"Recommend me for the promotion tomorrow'.

Zury is certain not a good friend, and neither is he a prospect for love. Your story captures how shallow people can be when all they are concerned for is climbing the corporate ladder.

Thanks for sharing your story in The Ink Well, and for reading and commenting on the work of other writers in the community.

Wow, I hope Zury doesn't recommend him. He does not deserve it.

One thing I was wondering as I read this story is how it was inspired by the Shadow prompt. I must have missed it!
