Drawing the king of horns

In this opportunity I am going to share with you the process of making a reindeer or caribou, the emblematic animal of Canada and the same one that Saint Nicholas uses when he goes with the sleigh through the skies.

But before exposing the procedure, it is appropriate to take into account some aspects related to the nature of this beautiful animal.

In North America they are usually called reindeer when they are domestic; that is to say, when they are raised for various purposes, one of which is that they are used as draft animals or, what amounts to the same thing, to pull sledges; They are also raised to obtain meat, milk and hides. But they are called caribou when they live in the wild.

They inhabit the arctic zone of Europe, Asia and America. They tend to migrate north after winter in search of food. They feed on willows, birches, lichens and grasses.

They are not that tall, measuring between 110 and 130 centimeters and weighing between 60 and 170 kilos, although the adult male can weigh up to 250 kilograms.

They are gregarious animals that form from small to numerous herds, from 50 thousand to half a million individuals.

Unlike other cervids, both males and females grow horns; only that those of the males are larger. These horns fall off every year. Males drop in late fall, after mating days.

During the mating season, males fight for territory and for females, and they enter into violent battles after which they can inflict serious injuries that even lead to death. It also often happens that the antlers get entangled and the pair of animals ends up dying of starvation.

When threatened by predators, the herds create a whirlpool of reindeer running in a circle, in the middle of which the females with their young take shelter.
