Salzburg : Medieval City Carved into the Rocks

(Edited)

Located in western Austria, on the border with Germany, lies the small German-speaking city of Salzburg. It is feasible to travel through it in just two days while still taking in every aspect of it from start to finish. It is not necessary to spend more than a day there; nonetheless, we strongly suggest that you make the most of your time there by enjoying both the day and the nighttime activities available to you while you are there.

image.png

It's a new city that you might go to for a weekend getaway, or you might go between one and two hours to go sightseeing in towns like Vienna or Munich for a day or two. The name Salzburg comes from the German terms for salt (salz) and castle (castle). Salzburg is located in an area that is dominated by salt mines (burg).

image.png

No need for public transport

All of the city's attractions may be reached on foot without difficulty. It should take you somewhere between ten and fifteen minutes to get on foot from Salzburg Haupbahnhof to the city center. They will drop you off at the Haupbahnhof, particularly if you are traveling from Vienna or Munich by Flixbus or by train. It is recommended that one make their way to the heart of the city from this location, and that is precisely what we did.

The river runs through Salzburg

It is difficult for us to adjust to and appreciate cities that do not have access to water. Salzburg overtakes us in the competition for first place thanks to the Salzach River. Because of this, strolling through the city, which is located on both banks of the river, is such a pleasant experience. Long walks can be taken along the river, and photographs can be taken of the city in the distance from any of the bridges that cross it. The Salzburg Castle will be following your every move from this point on.

The Palace and Gardens of Mirabell

The Mirabell Palace and Garden, which is an outstanding illustration of landscape design, should be your first destination after walking for ten to fifteen minutes from the train station in the direction opposite of the river. This palace on Mirabellplatz is presently being used as the city hall, and visitors are welcome to stroll through its grounds. Even though it is a beautiful garden to meander around, it cannot compare to the landscape wonder parks that are found in Paris. After all, how could something that's green ever be harmful?

Mozart's music may be heard virtually everywhere

The birthplace of Mozart, the residence of Mozart, Mozart University, the Mozart Chocolate Shop, the Mozart Statue, and Mozart Cafe... In Salzburg, there is an unhealthy obsession with the music of Mozart. If you are a fan of Mozart, which is somewhat uncommon, but there is a city where you will never run out of things to do, hear, and watch here.

image.png

Before you cross the river to get to Mirabell Palace, you can go and check out the house where Mozart once called home. On the other bank of the river is the residence in which Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born.

Baroque!

When you have finished crossing the river, you will find yourself in the Altstadt neighborhood of Salzburg. A maze of baroque architecture may be seen in the city's ancient area of Salzburg. Moving from one street to another makes it simple to lose sight of where you've been and how to find your way back to the beginning of the journey.

image.png

It is difficult not to feel as though you have been transported back to the Middle Ages when you are getting lost in this maze that consists of multiple squares, each of which we shall explore separately.

Getreidegasse street

When you reach the Staatbrücke, which is the largest bridge that crosses the river, the road will split to the right and the left. Continue straight over the bridge. You are currently facing Salzburg's most famous and touristy shopping district, which is on your right. In addition, the house where Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born is located on this street, in addition to a number of other businesses, design stores, chocolatiers, and cafes.

image.png

Because there are already a significant number of other tourists standing in front of this site, it won't be difficult to find. One of the most eye-catching features of this street are the ornate wrought iron signs that adorn each storefront; these signs are based on an age-old custom. It's a lot of pleasure to window shop at beautiful designer boutiques even if you have no intention of buying anything.

The city dominated by statues!

In Salzburg, you won't find any of those overdone artistic sculptures at any of the steps along the journey. The art of sculpting and the music of the classical era both have a place of prominence in Austria as cultural pursuits. After Vienna, Salzburg had the same feeling as it had before.

image.png

The doors to historical sculptures are typically locked, especially during the colder months, to keep the elements from damaging them. During our trip in March, the majority of the monuments that stood in front of palaces and churches were shielded from view by transparent guards or wooden planks.

Hohensalzburg Castle

From a distance, it is possible to view a castle, regardless of whether you are strolling along the river or around the plaza. To reach the castle, you can either ride the funicular that departs at Festungsgasse or hike up the hill. We made the decision to walk, which, in our opinion, is the more delightful option given that you can see the city slowly emerge from beneath your feet as you move forward.

image.png

If you want to see the castle, you can get a ticket to do so from the gift shop. If you already have a Salzburg card, you do not need to pay any more money for the ticket to ride the funicular, the ticket to visit the castle, or the ticket to enter the museum.

Thanks for your report. I took me back in time. I was there about 35 years ago and I still remember. Did you tried the "Mozartkogel" ? I loved them! I also remember the Ferdinand Porsche Museum.

Great to know you have good memories of Salzburg even after so many years! We had few Mozartkogel as dark chocolate is my favorite. Due to some timing issues we could not visit the museum, but Definitely I would like to visit there on my next trip. Thanks for taking time time to read .
