What happens if the Earth stops spinning?

We have seen previously, movie actors were given to an incredible sight: Superman reversing the Earth's spin and, in the process, turning back time. But what if the movie literally becomes reality? Of course, we hope for the best, but what if something disrupted the Earth's rotation? What would happen if the rotation came to a full halt?

When the sun is taken into consideration, the earth rotates once every 24 hours. In actuality, the sidereal orbital period, which lasts 23 hours, 56 minutes, and 4.09053 seconds, rotates it once every 23 hours, 56 minutes, and 4.09053 seconds. We are oblivious to the earth's rotation. This is because humans, along with everything else on the globe, including the oceans and atmosphere, rotate at the same steady speed as the earth.

If the World comes to an halt

It would be disastrous for the majority of the planet's surface if the Earth abruptly stopped rotating. We all move with the earth as it revolves, even if we don't realize it; at the equator, this accelerates to about 1,609 kilometers per hour. Everything on the globe will fly eastward if you suddenly stop it. Imagine being hurled sideways at hundreds of kilometers per hour, with people, houses, trees, rocks, and more. After that, high-speed winds would clear the surface, still spinning almost as quickly as the globe.

The impacts would still be profound if the slowdown was more gradual, but over a longer period of time. The first thing we notice is that the Sun no longer revolves around the sky for an entire day. The Sun's apparent motion is caused by Earth's rotation; if the planet were stationary, a single day would take half a year (though we could still look forward to some very long sunsets).

Biological circadian rhythms would be entirely useless without the 24-hour days we are accustomed to. The regular modifications made for sunlight to work play a role in the rhythmic cellular processes that instruct our bodies when to sleep and when to get up. Many animals around the world, from bees to trees, rely on circadian rhythms to thrive. Changing these cycles might cause normal behavior patterns to become disrupted.

Earth's atmospheric patterns are also influenced by the planet's rotation. The way air currents flow would be substantially altered if the globe stopped rotating (after the 1,600 km/h winds had diminished). Today's wind patterns play a key part in boosting precipitation and temperatures all around the world. Any change in air currents, such as when trees are present, can lead deserts to bloom or frozen tundra to become habitable.

A dormant planet, on the other hand, could spell the end of our magnetic field. The liquid metal core of the Earth. It is responsible for a web of invisible magnetic field lines that spiral around the planet, which scientists refer to as a dynamo. Because the Earth's magnetic field protects humans from cosmic rays and electromagnetic storms from the Sun, the impacts of losing this area would be substantially greater. It's something we'll want to continue doing.

The everlasting day planets

There are no non-rotating planets that we are aware of. Planets and other celestial bodies are formed through natural processes that result in rotation, hence all worlds have always been spinning. However, certain planets do not rotate, which astronomers refer to as tidal locking. These are the worlds where the stars always have the same face, resulting in eternal night and day sides.

While these planets appear to be severe environments—one side frozen, the other baked—some scientists believe life may yet exist there. Extraterrestrial life may find a happy medium in the twilight zone of tidally-locked worlds, around where day fades into night, according to some scientists.

The Earth's tides are unlikely to be bound to the Sun since we're too far away. And, while our planet's rotation slows significantly with each passing century (a day takes around 1.7 milliseconds longer), it should never cease spinning completely. This is something for which we should be thankful.
