Watched "Overlord" and LOVED IT (Anime Review)

(Edited)

I'm a really big fan of Japanese culture and one of my favourite things is their anime style! I'm a big fan of anime in general but no other country comes even close to the level of Japanese ones!

I must have watched over 200 titles over the years with the latest one been "Overlord", an action/fantasy "Swords Arts Online" like anime and damn I just devoured all 4 seasons of it in a week! Yeap, it's that good!

Story

Our main character is Momonga, a legendary Undead Sorcerer player and one of the masters of "Ainz Oal Gown" guild in the MMORPG game called "Yggdrasil". The year is 2138 A.D.

After 12 years "Yggdrasil" devs decided to shut down the game due to players inactivity and our protagonist Momonga decided to spend those last few hours playing before game shuts down for good!

Game was supposed to go down on midnight but midnight passed and Momonga found himself still logged in to "Yggdrasil" and unable to log out! On top of that all NPCs (Non Player Characters) inside his guild seem to behave like real persons.

Momonga immediately realised that something is wrong so he commands his guild guardians to investigating the surrounding of the "Great tomb of Nazarick" (guild headquarters name) and realises he's stuck in a completelly different world than the "Yggdrasil" he knew.

Plot

First season is more like an introductional season, Momonga along with Nazarick guardian Nerberal Gamma heads out to explore this new world he is trapped at and for security reasons they decide to change their names to Momon and Nabe respectively as well as their appearances. On top of that he decided to change his main name to "Ainz Oal Gown".

As in every world, virtual or real one needs money so Momon and Nabe become adventurers, fight against villains, save people and acquire lots of money, fame and influence in the kingdom of E-Rantel.

Fun fact : Adventurer Momon is a swordsman despite "Ainz "Oal Gown"'s (same person) sorcerer class yet he is so BADASS!

After realising how this new world works "Ainz Oal Gown" puts forward his ultimate plan, to create a kingdom of his own with inhabitants from all sorts of races but easier said than done!

Ainz had to fight with all sorts of races like humans, lizardmen etc. to get hold of their territories as well as solve internal guild problems with brute force like "Shalltear bloodfallen's" rebelion.

Battle Scenes

I've watched numerous Shounen anime and I can't say that "Overlord's" battle scenes were the best but they were quite good! Animation really shows how powerful "Ainz Oal Gown" is and thank god there are not many chats in between battles!

My favourite battle was when Ainz single handedly faced an army of 200k humans! Just one of his spells were able to instantly kill 70k soldiers and at the same time summon a black demon powered by the souls of the dead who would hunt down the rest of the army.

"Ainz Oal Gown's" is in a league of his own when it comes to "Overlord" power ranking in all 4 seasons.

My Opinion

"Overlord" had a strong story, some nice jokes and lots of battling. Most MMORPG anime have a similar plot and this makes them kinda boring after watching a bunch of them but "Overlord" kept me wanting to find out what's gonna happen next!

It is not in the top of my MMORPG anime list but it's definitely a top 5, can't beat "How to pick up girls in a dungeon" hehe! If you are a fan of dark Shounen anime the I'd recommend you give this one a watch, 13 episodes in each of it's 4 seasons with a total watch time of 17,5 hours. Short and sweet!

Let me know if you enjoyed this very first anime review at the comments section bellow and feel free to suggest any cool shounen anime to watch or review! Thanks for reading!

I've been needing to get into this for a long time too. I started it years ago, even. I think I watched two episodes but just got swarmed with things to do and forgot about it.

It's a really decent one @namiks , easy to watch, fun and great story/fights.

Not the best of its kind but one of the best for sure, at least in my opinion

I think I watched this before but I didn't finish.

Okay, nope, it's still on my watch list on Netflix. LOL

Reading how you rated it a top 5, I guess I should start watching. 😅
The story also seems to be interesting.
I'm not really into this type of anime but let's see if this may change my mind.

Shonen anime, right? How about Dr. Stone or Demon Slayer? They're pretty famous, you must have watched or heard of them I guess.

Top 5 in my shounen MMORPG list, a lot lower in my "best anime" list haha.

I think you will enjoy it even if you're not into these kind of anime, great plot and action.

Demon slayer is freaking awesome and watched Dr. Stone recently. Refreshing plot and great main characters.

Might as well do a review on this one now that I still remember the plot. I've watched so many and I can't remember what happened in half of em until I watch a couple episodes haha

Ohh okay! Hahahah but well at least it’s top 5 in that category.

Yeaaah they’re pretty great animes! Famous ones maybe you have watched them already. Hmmm, what else.. hmm hahaha

Hahaha yes that would be awesome to read too! Looking forward to that.

It really strikes me that it can be watched pretty quickly, with so many anime on the list it gets complicated to venture through 4 seasons (although I watched over 500 episodes of One Piece to catch up 😅). I've read very interesting things about this anime, I understand why you like it.

It would be interesting if you do a review of Vinland Saga, I did one recently, I think it's the best of 2023.

Watched "Vinland Saga" a couple months ago and liked it! Lots of good fighting scenes and great animation.

I think the best thing I can do now is do a review every time I finish a new anime so I don't have to re-watch old ones hehe!

Currently watching "Log Horizon", kinda similar to "Overlord" as far as story goes and not that cruel haha! This will be my next review hehe!

Ohoooo, I already finish this one. And I enjoy it so much. With the adventure, action and comedy in one anime, that's my kind of anime. I am also planning to rewatch this because I already miss them, haha. Maybe one of these days I'll download it again on my phone. That's a good pick of anime yeah (人 •͈ᴗ•͈)

It sure is! "Overlord's" fun scenes make the anime look kinda less dark than it actually is, great balance!

I'm definitely re-watching this one in the future too!

Yeah, Japanese anime style is simply the best! Can you believe that I've watched hundreds of titles but not Attack on Titans? Don't know why, kinda disliked it from the first couple episodes but I should give this one one more try I guess, everyone says it's one of the best anime they've ever seen

yes my bro, for sure Atack on Titan is very different in terms of graphics and anime aesthetics.. what caught my attention is that it is a sinister criticism of society. the wall, what's behind it? the police, the clergy, ancient occult wisdom... you can draw up various analyses. at the right time you take a look on that again.. Aloha
