Asertividad, encontrar la voz propia/Assertiveness: Finding Your Own Voice

Hello, my friends. What a pleasure to greet you this day, to wish you an excellent day, and to send you my best vibes.

Perhaps the term assertiveness is not familiar to some people. This word comes from "assertive," which in turn comes from "to assert," in other words, "to hit the bullseye." The journey towards assertiveness does not begin with a self-help book, but with an emotional exhaustion that forces you to look in the mirror and ask yourself: where have I left my right to exist authentically?

I know women who confuse silence with politeness and submission with kindness. They say "yes" when they want to shout "no," believing that this avoids conflicts and earns the appreciation of others. But deep down, a constant discomfort gnaws at them, the frustration of feeling that their boundaries are invisible and that their voice doesn't matter.

We learn, sometimes the hard way, that assertiveness is not synonymous with aggressiveness. The latter imposes, shouts, and hurts; submission blurs and disappears. Assertiveness, on the other hand, is that firm and serene point in the middle. It is the ability to express what I feel, need, and think, with clarity, respect, and without apologizing for existing. The first big step is understanding that feelings are not negotiable. You can respect others without nullifying yourself. You need to know when to stop, when to say no, and when to say yes.

In some life situations, we surprise ourselves using language that is, to some extent, submissive. Things like: "It's just that… well, maybe it's not a good idea, but…". We have to open our eyes and decide to change that, to start using phrases like "I think," "I feel," or "I need." After that, that small word, "I," becomes our anchor. You stop making accusations ("You never listen to me") and start saying ("I feel ignored when I speak and you look at your phone"). The difference is abysmal. People stop getting defensive and start, simply, to listen.

Setting boundaries is a steep mountain, but you can reach the summit. Saying "I can't take on that extra project" or "I'd prefer not to talk about this topic" initially causes surprise and even rejection in some. But over time, something magical happens: you gain a respect that the compliant "yes" never gave us. Assertiveness acts as a filter; it drives away those who took advantage of the lack of boundaries and attracts those who valued an honest and balanced relationship.

Assertiveness is a tool of integrity that we all can and should use. It doesn't mean you always win or avoid all conflict – disagreements are natural and inevitable – but it does mean emerging from any interaction at peace with yourself. You have to stop accumulating resentment for what wasn't said and understand that being assertive is, essentially, an act of self-respect. It is the commitment to honor our truth without hurting that of others, to occupy a space in the world with firmness and gentleness. It is having found our own voice, and having the courage to use it.
