Hola, mis amigos de worldmappin. Que placer regresar por acá para seguir mostrándoles las maravillas de mi Habana.

Hay sitios que llegan a uno sin siquiera buscarlos, y llegan para bien, para traernos un poco de paz y aluvio al alma. Es lo que me pasó con el sitio que les traigo hoy. En muchas ocasiones la había visto desde algún auto, pero ayer tuve que hacer una gestión muy cerca y no dude en entrar. Les hablo de una iglesia, la iglesia de Santa Rita de Casia. No es de esas catedrales coloniales enormes que te dejan con la boca abierta apenas las ves, pero tiene su encanto. Está ubicada en la Quinta Avenida esquina a 26, en pleno Miramar, uno de los varios más lujosos y respetables de la capital cubana.

There are places that come to you without you even looking for them, and they come for good—to bring us a little peace and relief for the soul. That's what happened to me with the place I'm bringing you today. Many times I had seen it from a car, but yesterday I had to run an errand very close by and didn't hesitate to go in. I'm talking about a church—the Church of Santa Rita of Cascia. It's not one of those enormous colonial cathedrals that leave you speechless the moment you see them, but it has its charm. It's located at Fifth Avenue and 26th Street, right in the heart of Miramar, one of the most luxurious and upscale neighborhoods in the Cuban capital.

Lo primero que ves al llegar es una fachada moderna, distinta a las iglesias a las que estamos acostumbrados los cubanos. Arriba, una escultura de Santa Rita presidiendo la entrada, acompañada por los cuatro evangelistas. Y a la derecha, una torre cuadrada con su campanario en lo alto y una cruz. En el jardín de la izquierda hay otra imagen de la santa, rodeada de vegetación, con un detalle que no pasa desapercibido: un rosal con flores rojas. Es que Santa Rita es la patrona de las causas imposibles, y uno de sus símbolos son precisamente las rosas.

The first thing you see when you arrive is a modern facade, different from the churches we Cubans are used to. At the top, a sculpture of Santa Rita presides over the entrance, accompanied by the four evangelists. And to the right, a square tower with its belfry at the top and a cross. In the garden on the left, there's another image of the saint, surrounded by greenery, with a detail that doesn't go unnoticed: a rosebush with red flowers. Santa Rita is the patron saint of impossible causes, and roses are precisely one of her symbols.

Tenía las puertas abiertas de par en par y enseguida me animé a entrar. Adentro es otra historia. El techo es de caoba maciza, con una secuencia de arcos que le dan una fuerza visual impresionante. Las paredes están revestidas de mármol hasta cierta altura, y la luz natural entra por unos vitrales grandes que te envuelven en una paz que no se encuentra en cualquier sitio. El altar principal, hecho de mármol, tiene un vitral hermoso donde se ve a Jesús, y alrededor hay figuras religiosas que cualquier cubano reconoce: la Caridad del Cobre, San José, la Virgen María...

The doors were wide open, and I immediately felt encouraged to go in. Inside is another story. The ceiling is made of solid mahogany, with a sequence of arches that give it an impressive visual impact. The walls are clad in marble up to a certain height, and natural light comes in through large stained-glass windows that envelop you in a peace you don't find just anywhere. The main altar, made of marble, features a beautiful stained-glass window depicting Jesus, and all around are religious figures any Cuban would recognize: Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre, Saint Joseph, the Virgin Mary...

Habían muy pocas personas, luego llegó el pastor y comenzó una misa por los muertos de los familiaresque que se encontraban allí. Por supuesto que me quedé durante un buen rato escuchando y acompañando. Hay varios unos reclinatorios donde la gente se arrodilla a pedir y agradecer.

There were very few people; later the priest arrived and began a Mass for the deceased relatives of those present. Of course, I stayed for a good while, listening and joining in. There are several kneelers where people kneel to ask and give thanks.

Allí supe que la iglesia se inauguró en 1943. No es muy antigua para los estándares habaneros, pero tiene su historia. Y no solo religiosa, esta parroquia está ligada a las Damas de Blanco, que acudían cada domingo a pedir por la libertad de los presos políticos. La iglesia siempre las acogió, y hasta guardan el banco donde se sentaban.

There I learned that the church was inaugurated in 1943. It's not very old by Havana standards, but it has its history. And not just religious history—this parish is linked to the Ladies in White, who came every Sunday to pray for the freedom of political prisoners. The church always welcomed them, and they even keep the pew where they used to sit.

Permitanme hacerles un poquito de historia sobre esta santa. Santa Rita también tiene una historia dura. Nació en Italia, la casaron a los catorce años, tuvo dos hijos mellizos, y quedó viuda cuando mataron a su esposo. Pidió que sus hijos murieran antes que cometer el pecado de la venganza, y así fue. Después se hizo monja y vivió con una herida en la frente que era el estigma de la corona de espinas. Pero al morir, dicen que su cuerpo exhalaba un perfume agradable. Causas imposibles, sí, pero también mucha fe.

Allow me to give you a little bit of history about this saint. Santa Rita also had a hard story. She was born in Italy, was married at fourteen, had twin sons, and was widowed when her husband was killed. She asked that her sons die before committing the sin of vengeance, and so it happened. Later she became a nun and lived with a wound on her forehead that was the stigmata of the crown of thorns. But upon her death, they say her body gave off a pleasant fragrance. Impossible causes, yes, but also great faith.

Salí de ahí con una sensación rara, de esas que te hacen pensar. En medio del trajín de la ciudad, encontrar un sitio donde el silencio invita a la reflexión no es poca cosa. La iglesia es sencilla, pero bonita, y tiene un ambiente acogedor que te hace querer quedarte un rato más. Si algún día pasan por la Quinta y tienen un momento, entren. No hace falta ser creyente para apreciar la paz que se respira ahí dentro. Y quién sabe, igual y Santa Rita les echa una mano con eso que parece imposible porque este es un remanso de paz en el corazón de Miramar.

I left there with a strange feeling—one of those that makes you think. In the midst of the city's hustle and bustle, finding a place where silence invites reflection is no small thing. The church is simple, but beautiful, and it has a welcoming atmosphere that makes you want to stay a little longer. If you ever pass by Fifth Avenue and have a moment, go in. You don't need to be a believer to appreciate the peace that can be felt inside. And who knows—maybe Santa Rita will give you a hand with that thing that seems impossible, because this is a haven of peace in the heart of Miramar.

Hi, friend, Greetings. Well, I’ll tell you that one of the things I like most about reading your posts is that you always share such interesting things. Coincidentally, I’ve walked past that church countless times on my way to my friend’s house, but I’d never stopped to go inside or take any pictures of it. Now I’m really curious to visit it. Thank you for all the photos—I found the story very interesting and well told.

I was so struck by the interior of that church that I couldn’t take my eyes off it. Whilst the exterior is modern, it has a distinctive style, and it reminded me of certain mausoleums. But then the church’s ceiling left me in awe. The design, the structure, the light streaming through the stained-glass windows, it’s marvellous and creates a real sense of peace.

I’m familiar with the story of Saint Rita, particularly the mysteries surrounding her death, things that are inexplicable. And one thing that caught my attention was that they still keep the bench where those women used to sit. It’s a beautiful place with an interesting history. Thank you very much and a big hug!🤗

Me impresionó tanto el interior de esa iglesia que no podía dejar de mirar. Si bien el exterior es moderno tiene un estilo particular, y me recordó a algunos panteones. Pero luego el techo de la iglesia me maravilló. El diseño, la estructura, la luz que entra por los vitrales, es maravilloso y genera mucha paz.

Conozco la historia de Santa Rita, sobre todo los misterios que rodean su muerte, cosas inexplicables. Y una cosa que me llamó la atención que aún guarden el banco donde se sentaban esas mujeres. Es un hermoso lugar con una historia interesante. Muchas gracias y un gran abrazo!🤗

Hola pasado por ahí varias veces aunque no soy de la Habana, pero nunca la había visto por dentro y está espectacular, la Habana tiene tesoros , gracias por compartir
