Las lluvias, los mosquitos y el Dengue/The Rain, the Mosquitoes, and Dengue (Esp-Eng)

El verano en Cuba es cosa seria. El calor que desespera, la humedad que cala hasta los huesos y, para rematar, la temporada de lluvias que parece que el cielo se le olvidó cerrar la llave, llueve casi todos los días. Pero no es la lluvia en sí lo que nos tiene con el susto en la boca, sino lo que viene con ella, el mismísimo mosquito Aedes aegypti, el más odiado del barrio y del país.

Hello, my friends. What a pleasure to greet you again.

Summer in Cuba is serious business. The desperate heat, the humidity that soaks right down to your bones, and to top it all off, the rainy season—as if the sky forgot to turn off the tap, it rains almost every single day. But it's not the rain itself that has us scared stiff, but what comes with it: the very Aedes aegypti mosquito, the most hated one in the neighborhood and in the whole country.

No es un mosquito cualquiera, no. Este es el que trae el dengue, esa fiebre que te parte las piernas y te hace sentir que un camión te pasó por encima. Y lo peor es que no es un cuento de viejas, es una realidad que cada año nos da candela. Por más que la televisión y los carteles nos repitan que hay que tapar los tanques, ponerle arena a las macetas y voltear los recipientes, siempre hay alguien que deja un cubito olvidado y hay aparece el criadero perfecto.

This is no ordinary mosquito, no sir. This is the one that brings dengue, that fever that shatters your legs and makes you feel like a truck ran you over. And the worst part is that it's not an old wives' tale—it's a reality that gives us hell every single year. No matter how much the TV and billboards repeat that we have to cover our tanks, put sand in plant pots, and turn over containers, there's always someone who leaves a little bucket forgotten, and boom—there appears the perfect breeding ground.

Y entonces, cuando el problema ya está encima, llegan las famosas fumigaciones. Las brigadas con sus mochilas humeantes pasan por la calle echando esa nube espesa que parece un atardecer de ciencia ficción. El olor a químico se mete por las rendijas, la gente corre a cerrar ventanas y los niños se tapan la nariz con la camisa. Pero, seamos sinceros, ¿eso resuelve la cosa a largo plazo? Es como ponerle un curita a una herida abierta. Mientras no le cortemos el agua al mosquito, la batalla está perdida.

And then, when the problem is already upon us, the famous fumigations roll in. The brigades with their smoking backpacks pass through the streets, releasing that thick cloud that looks like a sci-fi sunset. The chemical smell seeps through the cracks, people rush to close their windows, and kids cover their noses with their shirts. But let's be honest—does that really solve things in the long run? It's like putting a Band-Aid on an open wound. As long as we don't cut off the mosquito's water supply, the battle is lost.

Cada año, en Cuba fallecen muchas personas afectadas por el dengue. Una enfermedad que no distingue entre género ni edad. Una enfermedad que no inmuniza, así que estamos expuestos una y otra vez. El problema fundamental son las mismas personas que no son cuidadosas en sus casas y también la cantidad de basureros que hay por todas partes. Y con el tema de la escases de combustible no podemos estar fumigando a cada rato. Eso mata a los bichos, sí, pero también afecta a los buenos y, al final, hasta nosotros mismos nos intoxicamos con tanto veneno. Es un parche, una solución de urgencia para cuando el número de casos se dispara y los hospitales empiezan a llenarse.

Every year in Cuba, many people die from dengue. A disease that doesn't discriminate by gender or age. A disease that doesn't confer immunity, so we're exposed to it over and over again. The fundamental problem lies with the very people who aren't careful at home, and also with the sheer number of garbage dumps everywhere. And with the issue of the fuel shortage, we can't be fumigating all the time. That kills the bugs, sure, but it also harms the good ones, and in the end, we end up poisoning ourselves with so much poison. It's a patch, an emergency solution for when the number of cases spikes and hospitals start to fill up.

La verdadera clave está en casa, en la cultura, en eso que llamamos "resolver". No es solo del gobierno, es de cada cubano. Hay que revisar los patios, los techos, las canaletas. Ese taponcito de botella que dejaste en el jardín puede ser el hotel cinco estrellas de una familia de mosquitos. La lluvia es una bendición para los cultivos, pero para el dengue es una invitación a multiplicarse.

The real key is at home, in our culture, in what we call "resolver"—making things work. It's not just about the government; it's about every Cuban. You have to check the yards, the rooftops, the gutters. That little bottle cap you left in the garden could be a five-star hotel for a family of mosquitoes. Rain is a blessing for crops, but for dengue, it's an open invitation to multiply.

De manera que mi mensaje es que mientras llega la brigada y el humo recorre el solar, no te confíes. La pelea es nuestra. Abajo los recipientes con agua estancada, arriba la vigilancia y el sentido común. El dengue no da tregua, y nosotros tampoco podemos dársela purque sabemos de sobra que mucha gente muere por esta causa. Porque un barrio limpio no solo se ve mejor, sino que también está más sano. Y eso, mi gente, no tiene precio.

So my message is this: while the brigade arrives and the smoke drifts through the block, don't get too comfortable. The fight is ours. Down with containers of stagnant water, up with vigilance and common sense. Dengue gives no quarter, and we can't give it any either, because we know full well that many people die from this cause. Because a clean neighborhood not only looks better, it's also healthier. And that, my people, is priceless.
