Acabo de ver hace un rato en la televisión cubana el filme 18 Rosas. Una película filipina de adolescentes, con su fiesta de 15... bueno, de 18, y su historia de amor típica. Algo aparentemente ligero y refrescante, pero todo cambia cuando te sientas a verla y te das cuenta que no es el clásico cuento de princesas que uno cree. La historia sigue a Rose, una muchacha de 17 años con la cabeza llena de sueños, una muchacha carismática y soñadora que ha pasado años planeando hasta el más mínimo detalle de su fiesta de debut, una tradición bien simbólica que marca el paso a la adultez.

I just watched the film 18 Rosas on Cuban television a little while ago. It's a Filipino teen movie, complete with its 15th... well, 18th birthday party, and its typical love story. Something seemingly light and refreshing—but everything changes when you sit down to watch it and realize it's not the classic princess tale you might expect. The story follows Rose, a 17-year-old girl with her head full of dreams. She's charismatic and hopeful, and she's spent years planning every last detail of her debut party, a highly symbolic tradition that marks the transition into adulthood.

La cosa es que, cuando ya todo parece listo, aparece Jordan, un chico tímido y solitario que acaba de llegar al pueblo. Para que su fiesta sea perfecta, Rose hace un trato con él: él le echa una mano con la plata de la fiesta y ella lo ayuda en una búsqueda personal. Suena a negocio redondo, ¿no? Pues ahí es donde el asunto se tuerce, porque lo que empieza como un simple acuerdo va cogiendo calor y los sentimientos empiezan a desordenar toooodo lo que Rose tenía controlado.

The thing is, just when everything seems ready, Jordan shows up—a shy, lonely boy who has just arrived in town. To make her party perfect, Rose strikes a deal with him: he gives her a hand with the money for the party, and she helps him out with a personal quest. Sounds like a sweet deal, right? Well, that's where things take a turn, because what starts as a simple agreement starts heating up, and feelings begin to mess up everythiiiiing Rose had under control.

Lo que más me gustó es que la película no intenta ser más de lo que es. Las actuaciones no son de Óscar, sobre todo al principio, pero tienen una autenticidad que engancha. La joven protagonista le da a Rose esa energía de muchacha soñadora pero con carácter, y el joven protagonista interpreta al chico solitario sin caer en el melodrama. El ritmo de la película está bien llevado, y la mezcla de humor, drama y romance no se siente forzada.

What I liked most is that the movie doesn't try to be more than it is. The performances aren't Oscar-worthy, especially at the beginning, but they have an authenticity that hooks you. The young lead gives Rose that energy of a dreamy girl with a backbone, and the young male lead plays the lonely boy without falling into melodrama. The film's pacing is well-handled, and the blend of humor, drama, and romance never feels forced.

Lo que distingue a 18 Rosas es que no es el típico cuento de “van a terminar juntos o no”. La película va más bien de “¿y qué pasa cuando creías que tenías toda tu vida resuelta y te sale un remolino en el camino?”. La historia se toma su tiempo, con un ritmo más bien contemplativo que te va metiendo en la cabeza de Rose y en su lío existencial. Además, está ambientada en los años 2000, o sea, sin redes sociales ni teléfonos inteligentes, eso le da un toque nostálgico a la historia.

What's cool about 18 Rosas is that it's not the typical "will they end up together or not" story. The film is more about: "What happens when you thought you had your whole life figured out and a whirlwind suddenly shows up in your path?" The story takes its time, with a rather contemplative rhythm that gets you inside Rose's head and her existential mess. Plus, it's set in the 2000s—so, no social media or smartphones—which gives the story a nostalgic touch.

Eso sí, no esperes un final de cuento de hadas. Aquí las cosas se ponen serias y los sentimientos y revelaciones inesperadas pueden destrozar los planes de Rose. La película se atreve a mostrar que el primer amor no siempre es color de rosa y que a veces hay que hacer elecciones difíciles.

That said, don't expect a fairy-tale ending. Here, things get serious, and unexpected feelings and revelations can shatter Rose's plans. The film dares to show that first love isn't always rosy and that sometimes you have to make tough choices.

Si buscas una historia de amor juvenil que no sea tan predecible y que te haga sentir cosas, dale una oportunidad. Eso sí, prepárate para pasar un rato agradable y quizás hasta soltar alguna lagrimita, como lo hice yo. Porque al final, como dice el refrán, no todo lo que brilla es oro, y esta película brilla por su sencillez y honestidad.

18 Rosas is a movie that, without even trying, captured me. It's not perfect, but it has heart. If you're looking for a youthful love story that isn't so predictable and makes you feel something, give it a chance. Just be prepared to have a good time and maybe even shed a little tear, like I did. Because in the end, as the saying goes, all that glitters is not gold—and this film shines through its simplicity and honesty.
