Un paseo por el Vedado/A Walk Through Vedado (Esp-Eng)

If you come to Havana and only stay in Old Havana, you're missing out on a lot of the good stuff there is to see around here. That's why I want to show you part of Vedado—it's on another level. It's like the city's lungs, but with much more swing. Today I got up, took the bus, and went to run some personal errands in the city. Then I went for a walk through Vedado to make the most of my outing, because Vedado calls for that—getting lost among its streets and its period houses.
Me bajé en la calle 17 y eché a andar. Conocida como la "Galería de las Residencias Suntuosas" por el célebre escritor Alejo Carpentier, a sus lados se alzan las mansiones de la antigua oligarquía republicana. Tremenda vista desde el primer minuto. Muchas de estas mansiones son actualmente centros de trabajo, aunque otras son Residencias de personalidades. Aqui vemos, en esta impresionante casona, el ICAP (Instituto Cubano de Amistad de los pueblos).
I got off on 17th Street and started walking. Known as the "Gallery of Sumptuous Residences" by the famous writer Alejo Carpentier, the mansions of the old republican oligarchy rise on both sides. A tremendous sight from the very first minute. Many of these mansions are now workplaces, though others are residences of prominent figures. Here we see, in this impressive manor, ICAP (the Cuban Institute of Friendship among Peoples).
De repente todo es más fresco, más verde. Los árboles son enormes, como viejos abuelos que han visto de todo. Las casas son altas, con columnas y vitrales. Algunas están cuidadas, otras pidiendo a gritos una mano de pintura, pero todas tienen carácter. Pasé frente a la UNEAC y seguí de largo porque ese sitio si me lo conozco bien.
Suddenly everything feels fresher, greener. The trees are enormous, like old grandparents who have seen it all. The houses are tall, with columns and stained-glass windows. Some are well-kept, others crying out for a coat of paint, but all of them have character. I passed by UNEAC and kept going, because I know that place well.
No había un plan, solo ver, caminar, admirar, fotografriar. En una esquina, un señor vendía periódicos y libros de uso. Más allá, un chico rapeaba versos con una base desde un teléfono. El Vedado es una radio a todo volumen. El Vedado habanero es un lugar donde la historia, la arquitectura y la vida cultural se funden en un singular recorrido urbano. Esta zona abarca unos cuantos kilómetros, desde el Malecón hasta las proximidades del río Almendares.
There was no plan—just to see, walk, admire, photograph. On a corner, a man sold newspapers and used books. Further along, a kid was rapping verses over a beat from a phone. Vedado is a radio at full volume. Havana's Vedado is a place where history, architecture, and cultural life blend into a unique urban journey. This area covers several kilometers, from the Malecón to the vicinity of the Almendares River.
El Vedado sigue siendo un espacio vivo que alberga centros culturales como la UNEAC o el Museo de Artes Decorativas, así como el famoso parque de John Lennon, del cual les hablaréen otro momento. Perderse por sus aceras es adentrarse en una auténtica lección de historia viva de La Habana.
Vedado remains a living space that hosts cultural centers like UNEAC or the Museum of Decorative Arts, as well as the famous John Lennon Park, which I'll tell you about another time. Getting lost on its sidewalks is like diving into an authentic lesson in Havana's living history.
Decir Vedado en La Habana, es como mensionar el sitio de más lujo y esplendor de toda Cuba. Vivir aquí es de afortunados. Su posición es privilegiada. Es un barrio que nunca duerme del todo, pero tampoco es un relajo.El Vedado, corazón moderno de La Habana, respira entre rascacielos art déco y frondosos árboles. Sus anchas avenidas llevan al malecón, donde el mar rompe contra el muro. Allí se alzan varios hoteles, teatros y cines. De día, bullicio estudiantil y oficinas, de noche, la vida nocturna palpita en bares y centros culturales con un aire nostálgico siempre muy vivo.
To say "Vedado" in Havana is like mentioning the most luxurious and splendid spot in all of Cuba. Living here is for the fortunate. Its location is privileged. It's a neighborhood that never fully sleeps, but it's not chaotic either. Vedado, the modern heart of Havana, breathes between art deco skyscrapers and lush trees. Its wide avenues lead to the Malecón, where the sea crashes against the seawall. There you'll find several hotels, theaters, and cinemas. By day, there's a student and office bustle; by night, nightlife pulses in bars and cultural centers with a nostalgic air that's always very much alive.
La Avenida de los Presidentes es otra de las calles flamantes de La Habana. Allí se encuentra la Casa de las Americas y el Hotel Presidente. Caminé como dos horas. Me dolían los pies, pero el alma la tenía nueva. Porque el Vedado no es solo bonito, es sincero. Tiene la misma mezcla que el cubano, drama, gracia, resistencia y mucho, mucho ritmo. Si vienes, no lo pienses. Ponte tenis, aguanta el sol y lánzate. Te va a doler dejar de caminarlo.
The Avenida de los Presidentes is another of Havana's flashy streets. There you'll find Casa de las Américas and the Hotel Presidente. I walked for about two hours. My feet hurt, but my soul felt brand new. Because Vedado isn't just beautiful—it's sincere. It has the same mix as a Cuban person: drama, grace, resilience, and lots and lots of rhythm. If you come, don't overthink it. Put on your sneakers, bear the sun, and go for it. You'll hurt from having to stop walking it.

When you walk around with no other plan than to discover surprises, they come your way, just like in this case. The buildings are beautiful; I love the colonial style. The arches and columns really stand out, lending each house and building a sense of grandeur and significance. It’s true that they might need a little maintenance, but even so, they stand out and seem to want to contrast with and beautify their surroundings. I love that there are plenty of trees and greenery; it creates very attractive views and makes for a beautiful place to explore, even if two hours have passed. As you say, it’s a shame not to explore these spaces.

Es la zona que casi no se ve fuera de La Habana, pues tal y como dices, la parte vieja es la que se internacionalizó. Yo estuve por allá hace unos 20 años atrás, en una cumbre internacional, y me encantó toda la zona, es como otro país dentro de Cuba, aunque luego nos fuimos de turistas a otros espacios.

Truly amazed by how big and tall most of the buildings are in Vedado. I feel like my neck is going to hurt looking up at them and would really take time to stop and appreciate the building designs and structures. I really enjoy walks like this.
