The Power of Influence: Examining Positive and Negative Peer Pressure

The peer presure can have both postive and negative effect it can greatly impact the lives of student peer pressure is talking about so much that it can seem a little bit like a joke especially when you're a teenager but actually experiencing peer pressure can be so uncomfortable you're probably been told that to resist peer presure psychologically speaking it totally makes sense that we'd want to give in to social norms but that doesn't means it's always a good thing thankfully researchers have come up with some better ideas for resisting peer pressure .

Psychologists believe that we're basically hard wired to want to feel like we belong after all in our evolutionary past copperating with groups was necessary for people to survive because of this social norms have a huge effect on our behavior especially ones called injunctive norms which tell us how society thinks we should behave in certain situations these norms aren't necessarily bad but following them can also cause us to act in risky or dangerous ways to fit in .

In an early demonstration of this effect from 1968 58 male college student s asked to fill out questionnaries about going to an urban school then while they did the room thsy were in started to fill with smoke when the participants were the participants were in the room alone most of them went to get help but when they were in groups they were much less likely to which seems pretty weird one possible explanation for this is that the participants looked at other people behavior to try and figure out how they should respond if the other people didn't seem stressed by the smoke they might have decided that it wasn't something they had to worry about .

The positive side of peer presure can leads to many benefits for student such as encouraging good behavoir and promoting healthy habits this is because student are often influenced ny their peers and aspire to fit in with them for instance if a student's group of friends are all high achievers the students more likely to be motivated to to do well in school similarly if a student's friend eat healthily they are more likely to fall this habit .

Another postive affect of peer pressure is socialization student who are pressured to participate in group activities oftrn find themselves enjoying socializing with their peer and buliding friendships this is an important aspect of personl development and can help students bulid a network of friends who support them through difficult time .

Negative peer pressure can have far reaching consequences and can impact a student life in many ways one example of negative peer pressure is bully when a group of peer takes it up on themselves to bully another student the victim can suffer severe emotional and mental distress leading to issue such as low self esteem anixiety and depression addionally the victum may also experience difficulty concentrating on their studies as they are constantly worried about their safety and well being .

Another example of negative peer pressure is when a student feel pressured to engage in risky behaviours such as drinking alcohol taking drugs or engaging in sexual activity even if the student is aware of the risk involved the fear of not fitting in or appearing unpopular may lead them to make decisions which can be harmful or dangerous .

The role of teacher in this scenario did you have vital role in helping student navigate the complexities of peer pressure they can help student understand the difference between postive and nagative peer pressure and help them figure out how to deal with it teacher can help students develop a strong sense of self worth so they are less likely to give into negative peer pressure building a good repo with student and providing emotional support can help student maneuver their way through the challenges of school life teacher can also provide valuable lessons in dealing with peer pressure they can educate students on self care self esteem and resilience which is essential in the face of negative peer pressure .

Providing a suppotive environment can help students feel safe and encourged to make decisions in the last i have to say that peer pressure can have both postive and nagative effect on students while postive peer can lead to healthy habits and positive socialization negative peer pressure can lead to mental and emotional distress and behaviour therefore it is critical that teachers play a central role in helping students navigate peer pressure through personal support the provision of tools and advice and education teachers can provide a student with their skills and knowledge they need to make decisions and lead better lives .
