The heartbeats of the people pounded in perfect sync, with a rhythm in contrast to the jingles which the merriment of the yearly celebration brings.
The flakes from the cold snowy weather piled up all around the surrounding areas as the jingles continued without a break. And like the best song you’ve ever heard, it played on a loop continuously. Everyone exchanged pleasantries and kept a warm smile as their boots left footprints on the snow from all movements around. As a celebration that occurs every once a year, the people of the little town of Caventon added an extra effort to make sure that they do something different to elevate the spirit of the people in order to maximise the merriment that comes with festivity.

The arrangement had been made, everyone was informed and urged to stay positive as they focus to keep their minds from wandering too far. “Let’s not lose hope yet. It is not yet over.” Mr Clement, one of the senior members of the community leaders said as he concluded the meeting.
One after the other, the different heads of the families filed out of the large hall where the most respected and chosen members of the community go whenever there is an important discussion to be had.

The snow had increased its fall and the wind sent an unforgiving chill down the bones of anyone who is not fully armed to defend against its intensity. Different familiar tones of the season shot out of the houses on all corners of the street. The children threw snowballs at each other as they seemed to have developed an uncanny ability to defend against the cold. Everyone appeared happy and ready to enjoy the celebration with everything they’ve got. The twinkles of the colourfully well lit tree around the streets and houses captured the eyes of everyone like a beautiful young maiden yet to choose a suitor amongst the host of men flocking around her. The overall sight of it made ‘The day’ truly live up to its reputation; the day a king was born.

There he sat, with heavy clothing from head to toe. He looked from his rocking chair and sensed the joy within the hearts of everyone he loves. He knew deep down that this might be the last time he would share wonderful moments such as this with them. Tears rolled down his cheeks as he thought about what might have been if he was not knocking on death’s door. Mr Richard knew that time was no longer on his side. The words of his doctor flashed through his mind as he tried to consider the possibility of his survival. “I hate to have to make you feel discouraged, but I have to be honest with you. This is a very complex operation”. Doctor Ben had told him. “It’s not impossible but your chances of survival are minimal”. He recounted the words of the good doctor as he sat there waiting for the ambulance that will convey him to the hospital for his operation.

Mr Richard is one of the rare gems gifted to Caventon. His love and sacrifice for the town even in his advanced age made them regard him as a father. Everyone in Caventon looked hopeful and prayed earnestly for their beloved ‘father of all’ to come back to them freed from the captivity of the ailment that has threatened to reap him away from them. It’s almost a few hours to the operation. Mr Richard’s agitation increased with each hour as he tried not to think about what the doctor had said. He is a man of small stature, six feet tall with a frail looking body that seemed to have carried more burden than it could. He spent his lifetime building the little community of Caventon and assisting the good folks with any and everything within his ability. From carpentry to fishery, farming and construction, Mr Richard made himself available to everyone who for any reason had the need to utter the word ‘help me’. His cheerfulness, vibrant attitude, open mindedness and love for everyone he comes across made him the sweetheart of the community.

Doctor Ben along with a team of other doctors walked into Mr Richard’s room to move him to the theatre for the operation. “Okay, it’s time.” Said the doctor.
The well wishers moved out of the room as the nurses carried and laid him on the stretcher. The air is filled with uncertain thoughts. Hopes and prayers ascended on high as they made their way out of the hearts of the people like a smoke coming out of fire to meet with the clouds in the sky. Mr Richard was wheeled into the operating theatre to begin the complicated operation to remove the solid muscles around his heart. For what seemed like hours, the doors to the theatre remained closed. Neither doctor Ben nor anyone from the team of doctors were seen or heard from. The day soon went dark and the night arrived without much awareness of the people waiting in anticipation of the news from the doctor. It’s about 1 hour until the next day, the 25th of December, Christmas Day. Sleep eluded the eyes of those waiting as they sat patiently at the reception scoping the door that leads out of the theatre. Aside from three nurses who had gone in and out through the door in the last hour, no one else had come out of the operating room.

At 2:35am, just about 4 hours into the surgery, a loud scream was heard from the direction of the theatre. The door opened and a nurse ran out of the theatre towards their direction. They all stood up with wide eyes as they fixed their gaze on her waiting to hear the news she had for them. She walked past them without giving them much attention. The nurse hurriedly entered one of the doctor’s offices and walked out moments later with a file which she carried into the theatre. The room was filled with utter silence. All that was heard for a little while was the faint music from the reception area which seemed to have increased in velocity. The people of Caventon waited for the outcome of the surgery with their hearts earnestly in prayer for a miracle.

Two hours after the scream that sent everyone’s hearts to their mouths, the door flew open and Mr Ben came out still in his operating clothes. He looked tired and had a somewhat unhappy look on his face. The cause of the perpetual unhappy look on his face is due to an accident he had a few years back driving on a highway while distracted by his phone. He always told his story as a constant reminder to get people to desist from using their phones while driving.
“I came out to tell you myself” he said as he approached them.
“It was truly a complicated operation.” He began. “The clogs around the muscles of his heart made it difficult for his heart to function at full capacity. We had to perform the operation on a motionless heart. That means for a while, Mr Richard had to be slightly dead…” his explanation was interrupted by the chorus of screams that rang through the hall as the older women amongst the well wishers cried uncontrollably upon hearing the word ‘dead’.
“No, no, no. Please listen to me”. He continued.
“He is not dead. We just had to put him in such a state so we could perform the operation. I’m glad to inform you that the operation is a success.” He concluded.

Claps and cheers filled the air as everyone celebrated the news of his survival.
The celebratory mood had completely overwhelmed the gloomy and intense mood that had settled within the hospital’s atmosphere for hours. Their hearts became joyful and their faces shone with excitement. Christmas morning came with a miracle and they celebrated in love and with a grateful heart for Mr Richard’s survival.
That day, the people of Caventon celebrated Christmas in a way that it had never been done before. They arranged a lot of different dishes along with drinks and presents which they brought to the hospital in the spirit of Christmas and in gratitude to the doctors, nurses and anyone willing to join in celebrating Mr Richard’s escape from the cold clutches of death.

The merriment and love within the little town of Caventon knew no bounds as the good news entered all corners of the neighbourhood. It was a day truly worth celebrating, the joy and celebration of the Yuletide merged with the celebration of a life saved from death. A true Christmas miracle.

"No no no. Por favor escuchame".
