Tomb Raider is probably one of the most famous and iconic franchises in video games, since its first title in 1996 Lara Croft has become an incredible protagonist in video games and has had a lot of adventures and fantastic titles. Since its beginnings Tomb Raider has maintained certain elements in common in its titles, Lara the protagonist of the adventures where we face curses, ancient gods, ancient civilizations and many more mysteries of this world, all this with the traditional third person view which was very practical for the different platform jumps. Although most of the videogames of the saga maintain these aspects, there is a videogame that changed the formula of Tomb Raider, even changed the name in the title, this game is "Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light" which finally after a long time I decided to give it a chance despite being so different from the classic Tomb Raider. After its first level I found it to be an incredible game, as well as curious.

lcgol_2022_09_22_13_56_46_754.png

The first thing that jumps out when I started this game is its view, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light has an isometric view similar to several dungeon games as well as Warcraft titles, for this reason you can not have the same level of accuracy as in the titles in third person, but the accuracy in jumps is not as necessary, although you can not appreciate better the different Spirtes of Lara as well as their weapons or environmental elements to have a more distant camera. In the same way as the camera style can be interesting so are some cinematics and this is because although several cinematics are like the ones we know, but with better quality, in others it is a quite striking Comic style. The first level as you might think was quite simple and serves to get to know the controls and mechanics of this title.

lcgol_2022_09_22_14_38_16_534.png

This first level is called "Temple Of Light" and this title is based on levels that you can choose from a list once you complete them in case you want to play them again and achieve the objectives, each level has different objectives and since I started the first level I was shown them as well as I could see them from the main menu, What I could appreciate at once is that this title is focused on you completing the levels at least a couple of times if you want to complete all the challenges and this is because there are challenges of collecting a certain amount of objects as were the red skulls in the first level, as well as finishing the level in a time limit.

lcgol_2022_09_22_14_01_56_692.png

These two challenges are almost impossible to complete the first time you play the level because running through the level to get there before the time limit and at the same time going through every corner to find the secret objects is impossible. At the time of starting the first level we are shown that Lara has unlimited grenades which will be very useful and I should use them to open the door, a curious aspect of the grenades is that I can not throw them away or at least for the moment they do not let me, Lara drops them on the floor and leaves the Red Area of explosion and the grenade detonates it by pressing the button again, the explosion causes damage to Lara which I thought it would not and I discovered in a bad way.

The first level shows us how an ancient evil being was released and how we ally with another ancient being who was the one who sealed it in the past, this level was quite linear and although I found some puzzles which I quite liked as this is typical of Tomb Raider and I thought it would not be present in this title, the same were quite simple and intuitive, although I imagine they are mostly to teach you the mechanics of the game and later without there will be some more complex and complicated. In a large room with several pots I was shown how to shoot in this title and the truth at least in Mando I found it somewhat uncomfortable, with a single Joystick you have the movement of Lara because you should not move the camera view, for that reason with the other Joystick Lara will take out the dual pistols or the weapon you have chosen and aim in the direction where you are moving the Joystick of the sight, with the right trigger you shoot, you can move while shooting and the shooting angle in 360 but pressing the trigger while you are moving the two Joysticks seemed to me something annoying. The first enemies with which I put into practice shooting were a species of ancestral soldiers and similar to Mayan soldiers, luckily their movement is not so fast and with a few shots I could eliminate them. The Special weapon of this title will be a Sacred Spear that does great damage when thrown and is recharged in an unlimited way by some magic.

lcgol_2022_09_22_14_05_06_183.png

A mechanic that I found very good is to be able to nail the spears on the wall to use them as a platform to climb higher areas, I also found golden rings where I can use the hook to climb and swing on the walls as in other titles, an aspect which is quite different and that I also found quite annoying is the way to recover health and use first aid kits. In all the Tomb Raider titles where there are their famous first aid kits, we find them in the levels and we pick them up, when we want we can use a first aid kit from the menu or from the quick access, but in Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light the first aid kits appear as consumable objects on the floor and when we pass over them if we have low health Lara recovers it automatically, so they can't be saved for later. As I continued through the level and overcame some simple Puzzles, as well as defeating other enemies I discovered how the Artifacts and Relics that one collected in other Titles in this one have a function besides being simple collectibles and that is that they have benefits such as increasing the damage in exchange for decreasing the defesan when you equip it and I can only equip two artifacts and a relic at a time.

lcgol_2022_09_22_14_15_53_011.png

lcgol_2022_09_22_14_17_25_899.png

I also got a relic and these also give passive bonuses, but with a certain condition and is that in order to activate your upgrade you must complete the Relic bar that is under the image and health of Lara and this bar is recharged by eliminating enemies without taking damage which is not so complicated. After a kind of boss fight I also got some improvements as in the RPG and these will be improvements of health or ammunition which I get them in separate rooms containing some puzzle that must be completed for it. This first level was not that complicated and although I did not manage to complete all the objectives on the first try with a couple more attempts should not be too complicated to get them. Really my impression of this title was quite good and although it is quite different from what you may be used to I found it quite fun, although it does not seem to be a very extensive title to see the list of levels in the menu, after completing all the objectives of the first level I will continue with the second to see what challenges await me and try to record the first attempt of the same.
