Cheers to our childhood friends

Childhood was a very fun and memorable period for me (and I guess a lot of people as well) mostly because of all the memories we created with our friends back then. Things were a lot simpler as of then and it was quite easy to make friends because everyone usually spend time outdoors (except for all those "omo get inside" kids whose parents always lock them indoors 😆).

Once upon a time, I was the only male child in my family and I had only 2 sisters then which inevitably meant I became bored of playing with them after some time, so I explored my neighborhood and made some friends. One is a boy (Uzor) who lived opposite my house but his aunt always kept him indoors. My mom had a store in front of our house and sometimes, I look after it while she was in the house doing one activity or the other (or maybe when she goes to the market).

One day, the woman opposite my house opened a store opposite ours and started selling drinks (alcoholic and soft drinks). Her nephew is the one that looks after the store most of the time and that was how a new friendship was formed. We played different games, built sand castles, and constructed toy cars using empty packs of sugar and caps of bottled drinks, at the same time looking after our respective stores.

I also taught him how to do different stunts like somersaults, and backflips (I was very good at them). There was also another boy (Daniel) that lived in the house next to mine but he was much older than us and we only saw him during the holidays because he went to a boarding school. But whenever he is around, it's always double the fun because he had a couple of gaming consoles (Gameboy, Sega) and he allows us to borrow them and play games.

The 3 of us always come up with new games, especially Daniel who stays in a boarding school. I have a lot of friends in school too but none of them lives close to me and so I only saw them in school. The best time was when the children of one of my neighbors come to stay with their father for a few weeks, mostly during holidays. The children live in another city with their mom while their dad works in the city where I stay.

Whenever they are around, it simply means the games that only I and Uzor play (and sometimes Daniel) will become bigger, and in most of those games, the more people that are playing it, the more fun it becomes. I remember how we always scream and laugh as we play those games, which I will admit isn't fun for the adults around who have to deal with the noise we generate. Aside from games, they were also a couple of mischief which is usually done by me and Uzor 😆.

Things changed when my family moved out of the house we were staying. Coincidentally, that was also the period I finished primary school and got into high school. I didn't have a phone back then, so I lost contact with a lot of my friends from school, and also Uzor. The only friends I still saw back then were the ones that ended up in the same high school as me and Daniel who goes to the same church as me but I only saw him during holidays.

The last I heard about Uzor was that he went back to his parents who lives in another city. As for Daniel, we still saw each other in church whenever his school is on break and that usually happens maybe every 3 months or thereabout. The last time I saw Daniel was 2 years ago during his priestly ordination (yeah, he is now a Catholic priest). I had a chance to speak with him then and I said "So I will be calling you Father Daniel now", and we both laughed.

I will probably not recognize Uzor if I saw him today because the last time I saw him was over 15 years ago and he definitely would have gone through a lot of physical changes (probably carrying a full beard now 😆). It's really fun thinking about the whole thing now, those memories are very special and I'm glad I met a lot of people, even though I lost contact with them.

Not having a phone is one of the major reasons why many of us lost touch with our old friends, funny enough, finding them isn't as easy as social media potrays it

Exactly, some of them don't even use their real names on social media. Thanks for stopping by

As always dear friend, you always grace is with lovely and intresting articles. This particular one you did about childhood friendship is very relatable, as I can equally tell you first hand that I have experienced all types of friendships all my life, but none is as pure as our childhood friendships.

All those memories are what we think about and just smile in peace and joy.

Thanks for sharing this with us dear friend.

Not having phones have really made us lose some good friends. But I hope you meet Uzor the mischievous one 😅 and Daniel soon. You and Usor decided to terrorize the community with stubbornness 😅
