My worst and favorite teachers

avatar

Boy oh boy, this article is going to bring back a lot of memories from my high school days. Thinking about my teachers and trying to figure out my favorite (the worst didn't take time to figure out 😆) brought back a lot of fond memories for me. Thinking about the worst ones came with some headaches, but all the same, I picked out the very worst.

I would have loved to give accolades to my kindergarten teachers but unfortunately, I can't remember any of them. They laid the foundation that the others built on, coz I can't imagine what would have happened if they were lousy teachers. As for my primary school, I can't remember the names of some of them but my favorites were the ones that taught me in the last 3 years before I graduated; Mr. Chris and Mr. Ken.
Grade: 9/10

High school favorites

Maybe I should have started with the worst. I guess I rather save that headache for later 😆 I was a very good student back in high school and I was loved by a lot of teachers for being a very intelligent student. So, I had a lot of favorite teachers but as we all know, not all teachers are good and they do exist a few bad ones.

Starting with junior high, my favorite teacher was My English/Literature teacher (yeah she taught both subjects); Mrs. Agbolahor (God I hope I spelled that right). She's a very compassionate woman and also very good at teaching. She has a way of making you love any topic she taught in both subjects, and she can make them very interesting which is something hard to do in a subject like literature (only the prose aspect is interesting on a normal day).

She actually made me love English language and I became very good at it to the extent that in any exam I wrote, I always score the highest in English. Even when she was switched for someone else when I got to senior high school, I still remember most of the things she taught me and I applied them when I'm studying. The new teacher in senior high wasn't bad, but he didn't teach as well as the previous one.
Grade: 9/10

As for my favorite in senior high school, I will pick my biology teacher. This man can teach biology to a 5-year-old and they will understand it. He was so good at breaking down complex topics into simpler forms that the whole class will understand. He was very confident when teaching and sometimes he doesn't even come to class with notes, he dictates from his memory. The entire class respects him and they always pay attention when he is teaching.

He isn't strict and never comes to class with a cane because we are always well-behaved when he is around, he was arguably the favorite teacher of everyone back then. But unfortunately, he left after a year and we had he has gotten a job as a lecturer at one of the federal universities in my country. We were happy for him but at the same time sad that we won't see him again. I remembered we donated some money and got a gift for him, he was the only teacher we did that for back then.

The worst

Where should I even start? The physics teacher? (This guy was even beaten by some of the students) Economics? Or maybe further maths teacher? One thing I disliked back then in high school was that most of my favorite teachers either left or were transferred to another class but you see the worst ones? They stick to you like glue for years. But one thing I realized with most of them was that they are my worst because they are very strict, they aren't exactly bad at teaching, well, except for the geography teacher!

This guy is the worse of the worst. Was he strict? Not at all, in fact, that was one of his many problems. His classes are always boring, he only reads from his notes and doesn't explain anything, he confuses the whole class (and sometimes even himself) with contradictory statements, he deflects questions and changes the subject matter, he can't control his class; it's always chaos when he is teaching, and overall; he made everyone hate geography.

Back in high school, I barely read my books but still come out topping the class in exams, you want to know my secret? I always pay attention in class! I do that by taking notes and listening attentively to the teacher but with that geography, it was very difficult to do so because of how confusing his classes are. And to make matters worse, a lot of the students always make noise in class and it makes it difficult to hear what the teacher is saying

Even when the class is very noisy and nobody can hear what he is saying (at least the few of us that still cared to listen), he can't even control the class to keep decorum and when he tries to do so, the students don't even respect him. One day, he couldn't take it anymore and had to call one of the strict teachers to discipline the class, what a joke!
Grade: 1/10 (I wish I can even go below 1).

Conclusion

This was a rollercoaster of memories and emotions. As I was thinking about each teacher, I could see myself in each of their class among my classmates, even though I left high school over 9 years ago (damn I'm getting old). You will notice that I gave all my favorite teachers 9/10, why not 10/10 you might ask? I believe nobody is perfect and each of those favorites has their flaws. I wish I could do a grading of my university lecturers but let me graduate first 😆. Who knows, maybe some of them are here on hive 😂

That is so true..... As kids, we easily confused strictness and discipline as wickedness but looking back at it now, we would appreciate it.

You came across great teachers honestly, as for the geography teacher, his personality got the better part of him, he was too calm and cool perhaps but that's not needed in teaching as you need to make some "harsh" decisions to control the class

Nice write-up bro

That's just it, the geography teacher was just too calm to be a teacher and I reasoned he was still very inexperienced back then because he just recently graduated from the university. Thanks for stopping by

All the biology Teachers I've met are bookworms...they have all the knowledges on their heads and it makes me wonder. Our home used to teach for hours without his books, he'll be giving us note from his head😎.

The kind of your geography teacher, we had that kind too and it was sweet for us because the class always end up in quarrels which he reports to school authorities cos he was scared of flogging People wey go beat am Las Las 🤣

😂 exactly the same thing with ours back then. The guy was scared of us because when he came, we were already in SS 2 and to make matters worse, he is very short; majority of the boys are bigger than him 😂

Truly, this must be some kind of coincidence or something, turns out my Biology teacher and yours almost have similar story. From their teaching down method to their new profession, the story is almost same. You know God is a rewarder of diligence. I am glad that God has elevated them into lecturing, i know that they will go beyond that.

I wasn't having a bad English teacher though but I just don't like the subject even though the woman liked me, it was not just my thing. Your article alone tells that you are doing well in English, won't you give your boy some tips? 😁

Turns out geographers are the bigs boys😂😂 do you notice that most of them are male? Gosh!! I don't just want to remember mine.😂😂 Well they all tried, they contributed to our growth. God bless our teachers

I won't exactly call myself an expert in English language, I do make mistakes sometimes 😆 it's obvious that you also have a good mastery of English, even though you don't like the subject 😉 thanks for stopping by
