Found a Hidden Gem of a Small Korean Eatery, 88 Chicken.

I was looking for some late night food in the area and was brought to this family run Korean eatery, 88 Chicken. It’s located in a rather hidden location amongst a residential area which I would have never thought to go on my own.

I learnt that the small place is run by Mr Kim Yong Hwan and his wife Jiyi. He is a former chef and their place aims to serve authentic quality Korean food at reasonable prices. The decor was pretty minimalistic and the place only seats a small number of diners, so it was fortunate that I went there pretty late after the peak dinner hours.

A Korean eatery means one should always start off with some Soju! So I went for the pretty standard Jinro Green Grape. Nothing much to say about what is essentially a standard alcoholic drink. It serves its purpose and that’s it.

The main meal was the Army Stew, a classic homely meal in Korea. I have to say this dish was really good and authentic, and they did not stinge on the ingredients, using the more more expensive Korean spam instead of a cheaper local version. It’s hits the right spot and satisfies my craving for a nice warm hearty soupy dish. :)

Next up was the classic seafood pancake. This one surprised me. It was really good. I waited quite awhile for it, having already made my way through half of the army stew before it arrived. After putting a slice into my mouth, I realised the wait was definitely worth it. It was very patiently pan fried until it had a nice crisp exterior while the insides weren’t over cooked and still really juicy. This is one of the best pancakes I’ve tasted.

I was a bit too full by this point of time so I had to order a takeaway of their specialty fried chicken. I can’t possibly leave a place named “chicken” without ordering it right? Even by the time I finally reach home and ate it for supper, it was still really good. The batter was thin and crisp and the chicken was juicy and well marinated.

I must say this place really surprised me. I hadn’t expected a hidden gem to be located here of all places. I will definitely take note of this place should I have any cravings for authentic Korean food in the future. :)
