Lack Of Empathy On Social Media

Hello Hive World.

I was surfing through social media a few days ago mainly to keep abreast of recent happenings and saw the story of a young girl of thirteen years who committed suicide because she was body shamed on tiktok by some mean people.

This is not the first time I have heard of similar situations and it makes me sad especially because I am a mother of two boys and would not want something like this to happen to my sons or daughters.

Understanding Empathy

We live in a society where empathy is at a very low level and most people do not know what it means. Empathy is simply understanding what the next person feels in any given situation. Or as I like to tell my sons to put themselves in other people's shoes.

When we do this often enough, we can know how people feel and why they do certain things or make some decisions. This enables easy understanding and inevitably should produce less criticism or judgment.

It is lack of empathy that makes me avoid people who are quick to judge or point out faults in other people.

Social Media Power

We have made technological breakthroughs and innovations that have changed our world. Each year, we become more advanced. Smart phones are available to almost everyone. Our young ones have become addicted to the internet and more particularly, social media. Their lives are influenced by the things they watch and read online.

This has made our youths to be more self conscious because of the 'perfect' stars and models they see and the lifestyles they live. For the reason that they do not see themselves as nearly 'perfect' or good looking as those models, they shame themselves.

We are not all built the same way emotionally. Some of us are strong while some people are less strong and can crumble at the sound of criticism that should not faze them.

Also our backgrounds are different. Some children are brought up in a loving and friendly environment while some others have lived in abused homes all their lives. Any further verbal and emotional abuse like body shaming from a place (social media) where he or she has taken comfort in, then it would most likely result in emotional breakdown and suicide.

It is only those who delight in hiding behind the screen and disrespecting other people that lack empathy. They have no concern as to how their words would affect others.

Words have energy and power with the ability to help, to heal, to hinder, to hurt, to harm, to humiliate, and to humble.
— Yehuda Berg Source

As parents and guardians, we have a duty to first teach our young ones to be empathic and importantly, to always check up on them. Let them know they are loved and accepted regardless of what they see or hear outside the home.

Above all, let us make the environment conducive for them to confide in us and talk about anything. Let us actively show empathy to others starting with our youths.

I hope this helps someone today. Thank you for reading my post.

A good post, though I would like to add a little something.

It's important to remember that the majority of bullies do not actually lack empathy, they are lashing out because they themselves are suffering abuse that they aren't properly coping with. Many of these 'bullies' aren't really trying to hurt people, they're trying to make people feel as alone as they themselves do. For some people, that's the only way they know how to connect.

Of course, there are psychopaths out there that simply delight in causing pain to other people.

It's important that we not only make our children feel loved and supported, but that we teach them to love and support themselves. When people really know their own worth, they are much less susceptible to emotional bullying. People must first have a good understanding of themselves before they can experience empathy with others.

Exactly the point I am trying to make. You say some of these bullies want others to be as lonely as they but they go to the extreme of hurting others. If only someone had taken the time to show them love and support.

Thank you for reading my post. I do appreciate it!

Unfortunately, the anonymity behind the keyboard sometimes brings out the very worst in people. Personally, what I do is to just ignore all the trolls.

Ignoring trolls is a good way to deal with this issue. Alas, not everyone can ignore them.

Thank you for reading my post. I appreciate it!

I imagine that little 13-year-old girl being the target of mean comments and it breaks my heart

Empathy is what I look for in every relationship I have, whether family, friends or romantic. In my case, I am a person of very strong emotions, that is to say, if some comment were to affect me, they will do it very strongly. That's why I need people around me who can at least try to understand how I feel and improve the way they say things.

Your post helped me today, thanks for sharing it <3

Hi, hi @galistea! I am beyond happy that this post spoke to you. The 13 year old's case is a heart breaking one and I won't wish it on anyone.

I am emotional just like you and get easily hurt by mean comments or words. I guess we have to watch the things we say and speak words of love and encouragement. 😃

Totally agree with you Lady titan, if there's anything I'm grateful to my parents for is that they thought us emphaty and how to genuinely show love to people as that's what the world needs. More love and emphaty.
Thanks for sharing darling💗

People have no heart, no compassion anymore @ladytitan, I'm not upvoting because this post is past payout, and my vote would be wasted.

I agree and it's quite sad. If only we are compassionate, these issues will be less.

No problem about the voting. It's past payout anyway. Thanks for your comment. 😃
