Scam In Broad Daylight || Inuke's Blog Writing Contest #2

I came across this writing contest initiated by @inuke and decided to participate so I could share my experience while reading and learning from others.

Fraud and scams are prevalent actions that are rife everywhere, no matter how people may claim that one region is more innocent of such deplorable acts than others. I think the rise and popularity of cryptocurrency in my country contributed to this situation.

I remember when there were lots of ads on the internet at every corner of a screen inviting people to "work at home" for $50 per hour, or "earn $100 just to click" and so on just for simply completing a few tasks online.

These offers are usually tempting and too good to be true. Considering the poor economic situation of my country and youths struggling to make ends meet because of the low employment rate, many people clicked on these ads and lost money to fraudsters.

I had my share of interactions with a scammer when I was pregnant at home. My husband had gone to work that day. So while going through my phone, I saw an ad from "Eki Traders", an investment platform, inviting people to pay some money upfront, the money would be invested and a weekly payout would be made to the investors. This payout would continue as long as the platform was in existence and people reinvested their payouts for higher payouts.

At the time, I was happy to participate when I read the "reports" from other investors who were getting their weekly payouts based on their investment plans. What's more, this platform claimed to be registered with some authority that I can't remember now and also had legit phone numbers and a WhatsApp group.

I considered the stress my husband went through daily to ensure our son and I were comfortable at home. I wanted to help and relieve him of the burdens. So I thought why not invest some money and use the weekly payouts for foodstuff and groceries at home.

I believed I was doing something good. I invested, joined the WhatsApp group and actually got a week's payout! I was happy and believed it was genuine. How can a group make weekly payouts for a long time on a small amount of money invested? That should have been a good indication that the business was not real.

Anyway, I stayed online and was active on the WhatsApp group so I wouldn't miss out on any information. The following week, I was expecting another payout. Nothing came into my account.

I sent the admins a message and noticed that a few people also complained in the group that they were yet to receive their payouts. An excuse was given and we were told to be patient as the outstanding would be sorted in a few days. I was hopeful.

Then the excuses kept piling up and within two weeks, the admins stopped responding to complaints and the group was deleted!

It was a shock. That was how I lost a decent amount of money that would have solved many problems at home. I did not dare to tell my husband about it so I got money from my elder sibling to replace the lost money.

I was sad and disappointed in myself for letting something like that happen. Ever since, I have been extra cautious when "sweet" and "too-good-to-be-true" deals come my way, especially related to cryptocurrency. I know many people who have lost money, and the disappointment and frustration were palpable. Also, I have helped save some people from falling prey to fraudsters when I detected similar situations.

These lessons are a great reminder that in the world of the internet, it pays to be cautious and sceptical and not jump fast at offers that promise outrageously more than we are willing to give or pay.

Thanks for reading.

Hello @ladytitan, how are you doing?

Btw, how much did you invest in this weekly payout scam? Sadly, many people fall prey to this kind of scam. But we learn from our mistakes, don't we?

Have a nice weekend!

Hi there @pravesh0. 😃 How have you been? The scam thing was a sad and terrible experience that I always try to forget. I lost roughly $35 which was a lot of money to me then, being a housewife and pregnant. I learned my lesson and have been extremely careful since then.

Thank you for your comment. My boys are doing great, thanks. 😊😊

That should have been a good indication that the business was not real.

It is okay, many tend to ignore such warning signs when the returns start materializing.
It is sad that you got scammed but I applicate your intention to help out your husband. Don't let this scamming be the end of that. I know in the current economy it is very hard to maintain life with single earnings.
