The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020) | Review

I decide that I like a movie when it ends, no matter how the plot is going on in general, and it is not only about action or the climax it manages to reach for me to consider it excellent, it has to be more than that (and also less). As a choral singer, in addition to tuning and matching my voice to the same pitch as my partners, I had to follow my conductor and she would indicate with her hands the nuances within the piece, from a piano to a messoforte, the pianissimo are also important. I'm sure every good director, of every art, does the same with what they are dedicated to, and these nuances were very well achieved in a movie that could have been boring, there is only one master who can tell a story like this and make it a success: Aaron Sorkin in "The Trial of the Chicago 7".

Decido que una película me gusta cuando esta termina, sin importar como esté transcurriendo la trama en general, y no se trata solo de acción o el clímax que logre alcanzar para que esta la considere excelente, es que tiene que ser más que eso (y también menos). Como cantante coral, además de afinar y unir mi voz al mismo tono que el de mis compañeras, tenía que seguir a mi directora y esta me indicaba con sus manos los matices dentro de la pieza, desde un piano a un messoforte, los pianissimo también son importantes. Estoy segura que cada buen director, de cada arte hace lo mismo con lo que se dedica, y estos matices fueron muy bien logrados en una película que pudo haber sido aburrida, solo hay un maestro que puede contar una historia así y hacerla un éxito: Aaron Sorkin en "El juicio de los 7 de Chicago".

In the late '60s, many social issues were going on: the Vietnam War, segregation, and the fight against police brutality was among them. The plot of this film based on real-life is developed around what we described above and around a group of different political activists who advocated for the above described in different ways: protests and demonstrations were part of their itineraries. During one of these protests, in August 1968, a group of 7 political activists leading different causes was arrested in Chicago: Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, Tom Hayden, Rennie Davis, David Dellinger, Lee Weiner, John Froines, and Bobby Seale all for protesting at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. The trial is ordered by a new attorney general and is headed by a prejudiced and obnoxious judge. The trial became a trend at the time and with the slogan "The whole world is watching" and together with a couple of tough lawyers who believed in the cause, led this group of political activists to create some fame for their strong convictions.

A finales de los años 60 estaban pasando un sinfín de problemas sociales: la guerra de Vietnam, la segregación y la lucha en contra la brutalidad policial eran unas de ellas. La trama de esta película basada en la vida real se desarrolla en torno a lo que describimos anteriormente y alrededor de un grupo de diferentes activistas políticos que abogaban por lo anteriormente descrito de diferentes maneras: las protestas y manifestaciones eran parte de sus itinerarios. Durante una de estas protestas, en agosto de 1968, fueron apresados en Chicago un grupo de 7 activistas políticos que lideraban diferentes causas: Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, Tom Hayden, Rennie Davis, David Dellinger, Lee Weiner, John Froines y Bobby Seale todo esto por protestar en la Convención Nacional Demócrata en Chicago. El juicio es ordenado por un nuevo fiscal general y está encabezado por un juez prejuicioso y detestable. El juicio se convirtió en tendencia en la época y con la consigna de "El mundo entero está mirando" y junto a un par de aguerridos abogados que creían en la causa, llevo a este grupo de activistas políticos a crearse cierta fama por gracias a sus fuertes convicciones.

The movie has a parade of stars playing the different roles, so much that it could even be overwhelming for not being able to keep track of any of them well, but then, investigating a little in the life of each of the people to whom these actors gave life, it could not be otherwise, we are talking about political leaders, with strong characters, each one from their podium had their inflated egos and strong characters. That's why they brought in this strong casting clearly led by Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything) and Sascha Baron Cohen (Borat), although I adore Eddie, he couldn't shine as much as he had done before in The Theory of Everything or The Danish Girl.

La película tiene un desfile de estrellas interpretando los diferentes papeles, tanto que incluso podía resultar abrumador por no poder seguirle la pista bien a ninguno de ellos, pero luego,investigando un poco en la vida de cada uno de las personas a las que estos actores les dieron vida, no podía ser de otra manera, estamos hablando de lideres políticos,con fuertes caracteres, cada uno desde su estrado tenían sus egos inflado y sus caracteres fuertes. Es por esto que se trajeron a este casting fuerte claramente liderado por Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything) y Sascha Baron Cohen (Borat),aunque adore a Eddie, no pudo brillar tanto como ya lo había hecho antes en La teoría del todo o en La chica Danesa.

However, the performances are saved by a somewhat unlikely actor, because we are used to seeing him in more "funny" roles, Sascha Baron Cohen, who plays Abbie Hoffman, the leader of the Yippie movement, the one who wanted to raise the pentagon only with "good energies", and the most incredible thing is that he did not caricature this character so well known and so important in the political movements of the late 60s; He brought, in addition to the humor that characterizes him (both Sascha and Abbie), the revolutionary character of the time, the thinker who was under the bangs and tousled hair, a true fighter for just causes and that is when we realize why Sascha agreed to choose this role, which also gave him nominations for the Oscars and Golden Globes.

Sin embargo, las actuaciones son salvadas por un actor algo inverosímil, porque estamos acostumbrados a verlo en papeles más "graciosos", Sascha Baron Cohen, quién interpreta a Abbie Hoffman, el líder del movimiento Yippie, ese que quiso hacer elevar al pentágono solo con "buenas energías", y lo más increíble es que no caricaturizó a este personaje tan conocido y tan importante en los movimientos políticos de finales de los años 60s; le aportó, además del humor que lo caracteriza (tanto a Sascha como a Abbie), el carácter revolucionario de la época, el pensador que había bajo los flecos y el cabello despeinado, un verdadero luchador por las causas justas y es cuando nos damos cuenta porque Sascha accedió a escoger este papel, que además, le otorgó nominaciones a los premios Oscars y a los Golden Globes.

Algo que también me dejó estupefacta, ademas de una excelente cinematografía, fue su música, no me esperaba tantas dosis de Rock del bueno en esta película, toda la banda sonora fue compuesta por Daniel Pemberton, y no podía separar la analogía con la que empecé a hablar de esta reseña de toda la música compuesta para esta película que terminó de darle el toque completamente sesentero y hace que alcancemos el climax de esta junto a esta maravillosa creación, yo estaba viendo la película con mis audífonos puestos y cuando comenzó a sonar la música durante las escenas de las protestas me dije: WOW, realmente lo lograron. Me iba a explotar el cerebro con tanta genialidad. Y aunque la canción "Here my voice* fue nominada a los premios Oscars como mejor canción, la pieza que más me gustó es Blood On the Streets.
