From Pirated Music to NFTs - The LimeWire Saga

LimeWire

Before jumping into the story of LimeWire, I have to say that I love the nostalgia factor. LimeWire was the premier platform for pirating music over your dog shit dial-up connection. It was the coolest thing ever amongst my friends and family that you could get any song for free in an era when streaming wasn't really around. There were few options to stream unlimited songs (if any) around that time, maybe Napster was one but I don't think so.

The only ways I knew of to get music was to either pirate it or find a way to get the money from my parents to buy the CD... Which was no fun. So I spent a lot of time on LimeWire allegedly as most kids did downloading as much music as possible. It took a solid 30 minutes to an hour or more to download a song, so it was standard practice to do the whole "line the mouse up with the edge of the progress bar to make sure it's moving" trick.

As you can tell, this brings back a lot of my childhood, and I'm here for it. When I heard that LimeWire was rising from the dead as an NFT marketplace, I couldn't help but be just a little bit excited. Not because I'm planning on buying all the LimeWire originals NFTs or their new LMWR token... No. The nostalgia factor. I very much enjoy things from the past, especially things like this.

I don't support the RadioShack DeFi platform, but it kinda made me smile even though I'm pretty sure it's just a way for Tai Lopez to dump his bags...

Now you might be asking yourself "well, what kind of gems am I gunna find on LimeWire in 2022?" and you should be. Do yourself a favor and head over to the official website and take a gander for yourself. Not only will you find LimeWire original NFTs, but you'll also find NFTs from your favorite artist Soulja Boy lol. Clearly the target audience is people that remember using the platform in the past, but they claim to be attempting to push the music industry forward.

The video explains that because they're using Algorand for most of the NFTs, and users are able to truly own things like songs, art, tickets, etc... They are going to revolutionize the music industry. Artists will be able to release all kinds of different exclusive NFT content for their fans, and they can be easily purchased with USD or crypto. I'm just glad they didn't go the whole no crypto payments route. That would have been funny.

I don't really know what the purpose of the LMWR token is but I assume you'll be able to use it for purchases, and some kind of staking mechanism. According to the token page, users can use the tokens to vote on artist proposals as well. Seems the DAO is coming back, baby. Though I fully expect this to be highly centralized, just with some kind of voting system, it's a nice thought.

I don't really get the LimeWire originals collection, I guess it's just randomized characters like the whole 10,000 unique avatar thing. You gotta start somewhere, right? This is a completely dead company and they probably need the money to get things going. Who knows if these will be worth something or totally worthless. I wouldn't bet on it though.

I just wanted to talk about the weird excitement I feel for LimeWire coming back. I'll likely never use it, and have no interest in the Algorand blockchain... But it's still something fun to talk about because we all remember those days downloading tons of songs. Trying to get more and more into your collection of mp3's for your mp3 player or CD.

It's a fun time. Don't invest in this. Not financial advice, whatever.

What do you think?

LimeWire was a notorious source of viruses. Even for Macintosh computers which were then still widely thought to be invulnerable to viruses.

Those were the days…

Would be cool to own one of these, maybe I’ll take a gander. I allegedly remember downloading songs and someone picking up the phone during it all and boom there goes your connection lol. The good old days! Did you ever use Walmart internet? We did lol! Those were the Wild West days for sure!

Yes, allegedly someone answering the phone would destroy you lol. Definitely a simpler time!

Walmart internet?! I remember we used a ton of those free AOL internet demo discs, and our main connecting was through 550 access and it ran at a screaming fast speed of about 2 kb/s

Haha, this is me too.

It might be irrational, but I don't care.

This is awesome!
