How City Development Eats Up The Farm Lands

Bekasi is located in the East of Jakarta. Jakarta is the capital city of Indonesia. It is one of the most populated city in the world. There are million of urban who live in Jakarta.
Jakarta will not be able to continue its growth without the support of nearby cities. The land is getting scarce in Jakarta. Therefore, more people tend to live in Bekasi.
Bekasi used to be farming areas in the past. There are millions of hectares of rice fields. However, the development of Jakarta has forced people to sell their farmlands. Most of the farmlands turn into housing.
In the next ten years, rice fields in my area will be extinct. Here is one of the last pieces of land that has been bought by a housing company.
The company builds the concrete walls to make a border. The land behind the walls is owned by a housing company.
Millions of people commute from Bekasi to Jakarta every week. They ride motorcycles and drive cars. Bekasi will be a metropolitan city that is integrated with Jakarta. In terms of development, that is great progress, but the development will have catastrophic effects on the natural environment.

In this rice field, a farmer makes bedding for sowing rice. The rice will grow and replant in cultivated lands. Rice farming will last around 3 to 4 months. Sadly, the farmers have not had their own lands. Their rice fields have been sold, but they are still allowed to grow rice here until the housing company builds new houses. That is the fact of the development at my place. Bekasi will be a memory for farmers in the next 10 years. Will development destroy the natural environment?
