Putting Up A Tent
We worked together to put up a tent. The tent will be used for team work by those who are assigned to distribute the meat in Iedul Adha.
Today is the dry season. The sun is very hot in the afternoon. That is why we need to put up a tent. The tent is made of steel. It is usually used by the community when they have a gathering event. The tent is owned by our community. The lowest level of government in Indonesia is RT ( Rukun Tetangga), Or the neighborhood community. The leader of RT is elected every 4 years.
RT works to manage data for families in the community. In my RT , there are around 130 families. All the data is reported to the higher government.
RT has authority to own cooperation in business, social activities, charities, and health controls. Though all the activities are supported by the higher government, the decisions are a little bit decentralized.
The steel tent that we have is the RT property. All the families crowdfunded to buy the tent a few years ago. Now , we can use the tent freely. We only charge a small fee for maintenance.
There are also properties that our RT owns. We also have a land mower to cut grass and bush in the green area.
Working together is called "Kerja Bakti". We do not charge for Kerja bakti. RT officials usually serve some snacks and, water and coffee during the activities. It is suggested that everyone who has free time come to Kerja Bakti.
In our activities, we have some benefit. We can socialize intensively with other members in the neighborhood. The relationship becomes closer. Kerja Bakti is a characteristic of Indonesian people. We live in a big community.
Looks like there will be a feast to enjoy in your community. Your community seems systematic and orderly.
That is true, that is the traditional way we build our community, yet in a big cities and elite housing , the model role of togetherness have changed. Most people in elite housing more egotistical, they do not even know the name of their neighbours.
