When I was about 9 years old, I started stealing stuff from shops. I had money, but I liked to steal. It gave me a rush of adrenaline because you have to be careful not to get caught. So, I stole little stuff like gums and little bars of chocolate. There were no cameras, so no one saw me. There was one shop that used to be my favorite for stealing stuff. The owner had one leg. His other leg was amputated due to illness. Also, there was something wrong with his left eye. So, he couldn't see me clearly. He had a small shop in our neighborhood to make ends meet. He was my favorite because stealing from him was easy.

I stopped stealing because my mom told me stealing is bad. So, years passed, and I prevented myself from stealing from one-legged man and others. Until I got into high school, my habit got the better of me and I decided to steal again. One summer day, my friend Marya and I were wandering in the school yard when we decided to do something we usually don't do: steal. For Marya, it was new, but for me, I was very good at it. It was exam time and student left their bags in the school yard because there was no locker at our school.

I suggested we look for precious objects like money in those bags. There was no one around, so it was good timing. We started to look for things we could sell or take for ourselves. We found money, make up and one gold ring. When we found the gold ring, we said we should just stop and run.

And suddenly, one of the teachers came out of the class and shouted, "What are you two doing?"

"Run as fast as you can, Marya!" I whispered, and we ran as fast as we could to one of the school exit doors. Our school had two ways of exit. One was on the right side, which was near a kindergarten and often was closed, but that day it was open. The main door was locked so our only option was to run from the door on the right next to the kindergarten.

There was an iron gate that separated the two buildings, and there was a small space between them. When we reached the iron gate, Marya's head hit the iron gate and she went unconscious. The iron gate was hidden in leaves, so she didn't see it. I ran away and didn't stop to help her. Teachers gathered to help her. The ambulance came, and she was admitted to the hospital.

She returned all that we stole back to their owners, and they forgave her, so nothing bad happened to her as far as I know. And she also forgave me for not helping her when she hit that iron gate because she realized I couldn't do anything for her, though the stealing was my idea.

I never stole again because I realized its karma will follow me forever. I could have lost my best friend. Marya forgave me because we were best friends.
