“ WE TELL STORIES TO OURSELVES IN ORDER TO LIVE”.

-Joan Didion-

TEXT IN ENGLISH

A cordial greeting to this great family of writers and lovers of literature and quality post. All human beings have our leap of faith, that to which life takes us at some point without remedy, then it is at that precise moment, that we must decide whether we jump and assume the consequences or not. If we become aware, there are many leaps we make during our lives, but the one we remember the most is usually the first one.

Enrique had to experience his faith or spiritual strength at a very young age. It all happened when he was studying physical education, and he was taking one of the most demanding subjects, at least for him: gymnastics. The professor had noticed that in class he was afraid to do handball, because during the class he did not practice any exercise related to this jump. He would just sit and watch his classmates practice, which, by the way, they all did very well. That frustrated him a lot, but it wasn't a fundamental reason for him to decide to drop out. There was also another reason that served as an excuse for him not to do any jumps until the time was right.

That's how the whole semester went, with Enrique sitting down when it was time to practice the jump, and to make it more difficult, the professor decided that the final exam would consist of doing that one jump, and depending on how the student executed it, that would be his grade. Of course, those who did not do it knew what was going to happen to them: they would have to retake the subject. Gymnastics was one of the filter subjects in Physical Education and those who did not have the conditions would fail the subject and perhaps even drop out of the course.

Enrique never did anything related to jumping. He never read anything at all about the technique, never watched any videos, never jumped on that reed colt, which as you may notice he had a certain animosity towards, not even from his bed did he jump. Until finally and inevitably, the moment of truth arrived, the day of the final exam.

In his country the grading scale, at least at that time, was from (0 to 20), one of the many peculiarities that Venezuela had and perhaps still has, since it is one of the few countries, if not the only one with this type of scale. And although there have been attempts to change the different educational levels for a more universal scale, these proposals have never prospered, and it has not been possible to achieve a change in the way of grading, at least in practice, until a few years ago.

The truth was that before the test began, Enrique asked the professor to allow him to be the last one to jump. He with some sarcasm told him:

- No problem, we all know what the unfortunate outcome will be, it's almost inevitable. So don't worry, I'll grant you your last wish.

After that answer, he thought better of it, and questioned that request, since it was really absurd, if he had been the first one, the ridicule he would surely commit, would be forgotten in the heat of the subsequent jumps. But no, now he was going to jump with the whole classroom as a witness of such a spectacle. It really didn't look good. He knew the teacher and he knew he could not regret it, so he left things as they were. Everything was done, he was going to be the last one to jump and all things happen for a reason.

The vast majority of his teammates' jumps were good to excellent, but Enrique didn't watch any of them. He just visualized himself performing the jump over and over again. He had heard that the mind does not differentiate between reality and fantasy. He had read about this visualization technique some time ago, but it was only on that day that he came to put it into practice. It lasted for more than an hour, he forgot about his surroundings and concentrated on that visualization.

He was in a forced breathing practice, when suddenly he heard his name. He stood up without looking at anyone, not wanting to see a face that would take him out of concentration or make him afraid. He did some stretching exercises, a few small jumps, and then placed himself in the starting area to perform the jump. As he looked straight ahead, he saw the teacher standing near the colt change his blue pen for a red one. He also heard some derisive laughter.

He now fully understood what it meant to take a leap of faith, but he immediately put his mind at ease and waited for the signal. He heard the teacher's whistle and began his run. As he approached the colt he felt a peace, he didn't have the fear and anxiety that accompanied him throughout the class and even in the semester vanished. All that was left to do was to make this life or death jump and it would all be over.

He felt the trampoline under his feet, the momentum he exerted on it, and how he rose from the ground taking an inverted position. He placed his hands on the rack and made the turn in the air, to fall to the other side vertically without falling. When he felt the ground he said to himself, "At least I'm alive." Then he turned to look at the teacher and wait for the verdict. The professor, with a half smile and a "I can't believe it" look on his face, changed pens and placed the note.

Enrique waited for a while, until finally the professor said between his teeth: - You have eighteen points, very good jump- When he heard the grade, he felt a very great relief, along with a sense of accomplishment he had never experienced in life, he had successfully performed his first leap of faith.

See you soon.
