The Tarot | El Tarot. [Eng/Esp]

Fraternal greetings and the best of success to all the hive and the Holus&Lotus community. The history of the Tarot is exciting and full of surprises. In that sense, its practice is deeply rooted in the popular culture of much of the world, but it is important to clarify some things about its history and development, to put them in context with the intention of bringing to light false beliefs, which unfortunately have been transmitted from generation to generation. I hope this post will clarify many of these things and provide good information and guidance on this practice.

When we hear about Tarot, skills such as fortune telling and witchcraft come to mind. Many people are in the habit of visiting individuals who charge large sums of money to read Tarot cards. The famous witches or gypsies that have been popularized in movies and television and now in the so-called streaming, have been and are the main economic beneficiaries of these practices.

Most seekers of truth and personal growth, agree that these practices are part of one of the many occult practices that exist and that come from time immemorial as other knowledge that are used by scholars of these topics. But although it makes noise and it is hard for us to believe it, it is not like that at all; the Tarot is not occultist and it is more recent than many believe, but we will clarify that later.m

In my humble opinion, we should not take this knowledge lightly, it is good to know certain topics in depth to avoid that they can be used in a malicious way, since their emotional and psychological charge lends itself to this type of manipulation. On the other hand, those who love knowledge know that culture and especially science must differentiate between what is plausible and what is true, and between myth and reality.

Going back in time, the first reference to some very special cards considered as a work of art and still preserved, belong to the Duke of Milan: Filippo Maria Visconti (1412-1447). These antiques can be appreciated at Yale University. They are also known today as Visconti-Sforza decks, due to the marriage union of the two families. However, their use as a game was already popular in Europe with the traditional decks of cards.

These cards, which emerged in Milan because they had special images added to the existing ones, began to be called trump cards. They were so named because of the very popular parades that were held in Italy during the Renaissance, which were reminiscent of those held in ancient Rome. From there, they began their journey as power cards, since they were directly related to the political power of the time.

This is how they began to spread to other kingdoms in Europe, until they reached Marseilles. On the other hand, the meaning of the word Tarot has not yet been able to determine its origin, and there are many theories about it. In this sense, one that has gained strength is the one that says that the word that circulated at that time, that is, in the 15th century, was not exactly Tarot, but rather taroki or taroqui. If we go further back in etymology, in Italy there were some engravings with which certain surfaces were decorated, called tarocatas, which were used around the central figures and on the back of these cards, so this could have caused them to be so named.

Returning to Marseilles, it was in this city that they were given their definitive appearance and the images as we know them today were made. These cards became so popular that they were imitated by other manufacturers in Europe in the 18th century. We are already talking about a period of three centuries, from when they appeared in northern Italy until their European popularization. As can be appreciated, still in the 18th century they were not related to divination or witchcraft.

So where does this supposed property of the cards come from, so that when used by a person with faculties, they could know what had happened and what was going to happen in the future? Researchers say that already in the eighteenth century in many countries had ended the witch hunt and began to proliferate occultists who delved into the occult knowledge creating a whole movement in this area. This century was a century where publications were the order of the day, remember that the printing press had already been invented more than two centuries ago and there were many books on alchemy, occultism and related subjects.

These occultists, together with the intellectuals of the Enlightenment, were pushing the idea that humanity had gone through a golden age, which could reveal many secrets, among them the very origin of mankind. One of them was a French author who in a very imaginative way, in a series of volumes, revealed the life of ancient Egypt. At that time, the interest in Egyptian culture was so great that everyone was obsessed by it. Everything ancient, strange and profound was automatically related to Egypt. So many thought that the golden age of humanity had arisen in this ancient civilization and that the word Tarot also came from there.

What was certain about this work on Egypt was that it was more an exercise in creativity and imagination than a true investigation that would reveal the life and culture of that African civilization. To give us an idea, at that time the meaning of the hieroglyphs had not yet been revealed, so that everything that was said belonged to the realm of speculation and oral tradition. However, this spurious work was invalidated when the Rosetta Stone was discovered. This served to clarify that the word Tarot did not come from the Egyptian culture, which was affirmed in the aforementioned work.

In spite of all the fantasy and falsehood of these theories being exposed, the faith and enthusiasm for the Tarot cards, and the hope that they hid occult knowledge was strengthened in France as well as in the rest of Europe. Thus we come to the twentieth century when other decks of cards were created in 1910, which were created by occultists. Then the interest in occultism resurfaced again in the seventies (70's) when they began to talk about the Tarot again, not only as a way to know the future but also to find ancestral knowledge.

But the final touch to his mystical fairy tale came in the eighties (80's), when the so-called New Age movement united the Tarot cards with Carl Jung's universal archetypes. The interesting thing about all this is that all these associations remain unproven, and many claim that proposing this Tarot/archetypes relationship is another fantasy or at least a rather adventurous idea. To be consistent with the above, the Tarot images correspond more with European history and culture than with other cultures such as Indian, Chinese or Egyptian.

The Tarot was born as a game and there is no evidence of its relationship with occult knowledge and ancient cultures. That is the truth, undoubtedly there is no denying that this game has served as a reference point to connect different historical moments and has also been used in esoteric and magical practices, but its origin is not occult or hermetic properly but Renaissance. Hopefully this post will serve to clarify many erroneous beliefs and stimulate research and knowledge of true spiritual principles.

En ese sentido, su práctica está muy arraigada en la cultura popular de gran parte del orbe, pero es importante aclarar algunas cosas sobre su historia y desarrollo, para colocarlas en contexto con la intención de sacar a la luz falsas creencias, que lamentablemente se han transmitido de generación en generación. Espero que este post, aclare muchas de estas cosas y proporcione buena información y orientación sobre esta práctica.

Cuando escuchamos hablar del Tarot, se nos viene a la mente habilidades como la adivinación del futuro y la brujería. Muchas personas tienen la costumbre de visitar a individuos que cobran cuantiosas sumas por leer las cartas del Tarot. Las famosas brujas o gitanas que se han popularizado en el cine y la televisión y ahora en el llamado streaming, han sido y son las principales beneficiarias económicas de estás prácticas.

La mayoría de buscadores de la verdad y el crecimiento personal, coincidimos en que estás prácticas forman parte de una de las tantos conocimientos ocultistas que existen y que vienen desde tiempos inmemoriales así como otros saberes que son de utilización cotidiana por los estudiosos de estos temas. Pero aunque nos haga ruido y nos cueste creerlo, para nada es así; el Tarot no es ocultista y es más reciente de lo que muchos creen, pero eso lo aclararemos más adelante.

Por lo dicho anteriormente y en mi humilde opinión, no debemos de tomar estos conocimientos a la ligera, es bueno conocer ciertos temas a profundidad para así evitar que se puedan utilizar de forma malintencionada, ya que por su carga emocional y psicológica se prestan para ese tipo de manipulación. Por otra parte, los que aman el conocimiento saben que la cultura y sobre todo la ciencia debe hacer una diferencia de lo que es verosímil de lo que es cierto, y el mito de la realidad.

Remontándonos en el tiempo, la primera referencia a unas cartas muy especiales consideradas como una obra de arte y que aún se conservan, pertenecen al duque de Milán: Filippo María Visconti (1412-1447) para el interesado, se pueden apreciar estás antigüedades en la universidad de Yale. También se les conoce en la actualidad con el nombre de barajas Visconti-Sforza, por la unión matrimonial de las dos familias. Sin embargo, su utilización cómo juego, ya era popular en Europa los cuales utilaban los mazo de cartas tradicionales.

Estás cartas que surgieron en Milán por tener imágenes adicionales añadidas a las ya existentes, se comenzaron a llamar cartas del triunfo. Se le denominó con ese nombre, debido a unos desfiles muy populares que se celebraban en Italia en esta época Renacentista, que rememoraban a los que se hacían en la Roma antigua. De allí comienza su recorrido como unas cartas de poder, ya que estaban relacionadas directamente con el poder político de la época.

Fue así como se comenzaron a esparcir por otros reinos de Europa, hasta que llegaron a Marsella. Por otro lado, el significado de la palabra Tarot, no sé ha podido precisar aún cuál es su origen, y hay muchas teorías al respecto. En este sentido, una que ha cobrado fuerza, es la que dice que la palabra que circulaba en esa época, o sea en el siglo XV, no era exactamente Tarot si no taroki o taroqui. Si nos vamos más atrás a la etimología, en Italia había unos grabados con los que se decoraban ciertas superficies llamados tarocatas, que se utilizaban alrededor de las figuras centrales y en la parte posterior de estás cartas, por lo que esto pudo originar que se les nombrará así en honor a este hornamento.

Volviendo a Marsella, fue en esta ciudad donde se le dio su aspecto definitivo y se hicieron las imágenes tal y como las conocemos hoy día. Estás cartas se hicieron tan populares que fueron imitadas por otros fabricantes de Europa en el siglo XVIII. Estamos hablando ya de un periodo de tres siglos, desde cuándo aparecieron en el norte de Italia hasta su popularización europea. Cómo se puede apreciar, todavía en el siglo XVIII no tenían relación con la adivinación o brujería.

Entonces ¿De dónde surge está supuesta propiedades de las cartas para que al ser utilizadas por una persona con facultades, podía saberse lo que había ocurrido y lo que iba a acontecer en el futuro? Dicen los investigadores, que ya en el siglo XVIII en muchos países había terminado la cacería de brujas y comenzaron a proliferar estudiosos que ahondaban en los saberes ocultos creando todo un movimiento en esta temática. Este siglo fue una época dónde las publicaciones impresas estaban a las orden del día, recordemos que ya la imprenta tenía más de dos siglos de inventada y había muchos libros sobre alquimia, ocultismo y temas relacionados.

Estos ocultistas junto a los intelectuales de la ilustración, estaban impulsando la idea de que la humanidad había atravesado por una edad de oro, que podía revelar muchos secretos, entre ellos el mismo origen de la especie humana. Uno de ellos, era un autor francés que de forma muy imaginativa en una serie de tomos, revelaba la vida del antiguo Egipto. En esa época, el interés por la cultura egipcia era tan grande, que todos estaban obsesionados por él. Todo lo antiguo, extraño y profundo tenía automáticamente relación con Egipto. Por lo que muchos pensaron que la edad de oro de la humanidad había surgido en esta antigua civilización y que la palabra Tarot también provenía de allí.

Lo cierto de esta obra sobre Egipto, era que constituía más un ejercicio de creatividad e imaginación poco realista, que una verdadera investigación que revelará la vida y la cultura de esta excelsa civilización africana. Para que tengamos una idea, en esa época todavía no se habían revelado el significado de los jeroglíficos, por lo que todo lo que se dijera pertenecía al terreno de la especulación y la tradición oral. Sin embargo, esta obra espuria quedó invalidada cuando se descubrió la piedra de Rosetta. Lo anterior, sirvió para precisar que la palabra Tarot no provenía de la cultura egipcia, cosa que se afirmaba en la obra antes mencionada.

A pesar de quedar al descubierto, toda la fantasía y falsedad de estás teorías, la fe y el entusiasmo por las cartas del Tarot, y la esperanza de que escondiera saberes ocultos se fortaleció tanto en Francia como en el resto de Europa. Así llegamos hasta el siglo XX cuando se crearon otros mazos de cartas hechas en 1910, que fueron creadas por ocultistas. Después volvió a resurgir el interés por el ocultismo en los años setentas (70) donde comenzaron a hablar otra vez del Tarot, no solo como una forma de conocer el futuro sino de encontrar saberes ancestrales.

Pero el retoque final a su místico hado, surgió en los años ochentas (80), cuando el movimiento llamado Nueva Era, unió las cartas del Tarot con los arquetipos universales de Carl Jung. Lo interesante de todo esto, es que todas estas asociaciones siguen sin ser comprobadas, y muchos afirman que proponer esta relación Tarot/arquetipos es otra fantasía o por lo menos una idea bastante aventurada. Para ser coherentes con lo antes expuesto, las imágenes del Tarot se corresponden más con la historia y la cultura europea que con otras culturas como la india, la china o la egipcia.

El Tarot nació como un juego y no hay pruebas de su relación con saberes ocultos y culturas antiguas. Esa es la verdad, indudablemente no se puede negar que este juego ha servido como punto de referencia para conectar diferentes momentos históricos y también ha sido utilizado en prácticas esotéricas y mágicas, pero su origen no es ocultista o hermético propiamente sino renacentista. Ojalá este post les sirva para aclarar muchas creencias erróneas y estimule la investigación y el conocimiento de los verdaderos principios espirituales.
