TEXT IN ENGLISH

In some countries of the northern hemisphere and especially in ancient times, in the month of May festivities were celebrated on the occasion of the beginning of summer, in this sense it is pleasant and celebratory for me to publish again in one of the communities that most encourages with their accompaniment and assessment of content producers such as Holus&Lotus. Here are some comments on two fundamental moments of magic.

There are three radical positions or beliefs in the non-religious world. Those who believe in science, those who believe in magic and those who don't believe in anything. Between these three radical positions, there are infinite nuances and biases, it being logical that there are, since we all think differently or at least we want to believe so. In this highly standardized society, everything conspires for the existence of a single thought.

In that sense, speaking of biases, there are those who believe in both science and magic in almost the same proportion. There are those who give a little more preponderance to one than the other, generally science always wins. The group of those who believe that only very few things are true and that the rest of reality cannot be known is not small. Anyway, as I said before, the grays are innumerable when it comes to these two extremes called science and magic.

But although the evidence is strong in favor of science, I believe that there are issues and phenomena that cannot be explained with scientific postulates, at least for now. This is where magic comes in first as knowledge, although many deny that it is, and second as the possibility of transforming the way we perceive the world. The latter is fundamental, not in a utilitarian or individualistic way, but at a deeper level, I mean the existential and paradigmatic.

Magic is not at all what we have been sold in stories or in the movies. It is something much more measured, which strikes very sensitive chords within the human psyche. It would be difficult to define this phenomenon that has accompanied the human being for thousands of years and, even today in the era of artificial intelligence (AI) is still valid in many people, who are far from being ignorant or gullible. Perhaps, on the contrary, there are many educated and intelligent people who have deepened their study and practice.

However, as a historical fact that has undergone an evolution or transformation, it has periods in which it has achieved more validity and others in which, due to political or religious circumstances, it has had to be very protected in the privacy of its connoisseurs and practitioners. In ancient times, through Egyptian and Middle Eastern magic, a golden age was lived, to put it in some way. As a counterpart, we have the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, where it also had a development, but it was seen as an unnatural practice and could have terrible consequences.

It was a period in which magic and witchcraft were synonymous and even had tragic episodes for many people, as we said above. It is true that everything can be lucky or unfortunate and that a power or force can be used with good or bad intentions. But magical practices and rituals are totally different from the practices and rituals that are performed in witchcraft. Although there are areas where they converge and can even mix, that will depend, as we have already said, on the intention of the practitioner.

In this order of ideas, two great eras have to be separated in terms of the object or directionality that magic possessed. At the beginning we could say that it was a phenomenon directed abroad, since it tried to predict astronomical events, control contingent events, atmospheric phenomena, cure diseases or spells and superstitions. Historians and ethnographers have found different cultures that possessed some form of magic, more or less deep or rooted in their worldview and daily life.

When appreciating it with political overtones, we can agree that the magical phenomenon was a public or collective fact, used by all in an explicit way, although not in the same proportion or depth, since it had its codes and hierarchies. It is notorious that classes and castes have not only been present in the economy and politics but also in magic. However, although that period lasted for thousands of years, religion and modernity abruptly ended their reign. Magic did not come to an end, but it ended up hiding from the public sphere and moved more into the private or personal sphere, gradually gaining strength in the twentieth century and the current one, especially with the advent of societies and brotherhoods and especially with the social networks.

Delving deeply into magic is not the purpose of this post, however, it is convenient to mention some of its general characteristics, focusing on it as a discipline and above all for its healing purpose and its intention to achieve spiritual healing. All the knowledge stored by magic and its ancient practices in different cultures had consequences in different areas of scientific knowledge, in other words, many current disciplines have their origins and derivations in magical antecedents. For example: from alchemy -discipline already extinct- chemistry was born, and astrology -which is still in vogue- is an antecedent of magical origin that with the help of science originated astronomy.

Some insiders claim that magic and science are currently converging on some points in their attempt to explain reality. When referring to or developing another characteristic of magic, which was and still is present as something distinctive and fundamental within it, we have to mention its purely practical essence. Aspect that the difference with science that from its origins was an attempt to focus on particular aspects of reality to explain it with greater certainty and veracity. As we said in the opening paragraphs, magic had a curative purpose or health improvement, for that it used the properties of certain natural components such as plants, organic compounds and minerals.

In this regard, it is necessary to remember that current pharmacology has a large number of its active principles based on natural medicine, with an undeniable history related to magic. Something also very present in the two eras that we want to highlight within the magical phenomenon is its appreciation of that invisible world that is now being addressed by sciences such as quantum physics, and that many of us call vibrational principles, energies, or the spiritual world.

It is important to recognize, both for those who believe in it, as well as for those who do not, that magic has held an important place in humanity. Magic has given us the opportunity to have another perspective from a point of enunciation different from the currently hegemonic scientism, in relation to our less and less mysterious universe, from which we have extracted with effort some of its best kept secrets for centuries, through known scientific principles. However and fortunately, we will never know them all, if that happened, I fear in my humble opinion that we would be lost. We don't know what the future holds, but as long as there are mysteries to solve, magic will continue to exist on the planet.

See you soon.
