Totem |Tótem [Eng/Esp]

It is indeed strange, but sometimes you just have to look around you and you will notice things that had previously gone unnoticed. We insist on seeing life as a straight line, a thread, a beginning that will have an end. When we should recognize that we move in sinuosities, horizontal and vertical cycles depending on the spiritual, corporal, mental or existential dimension of the person we are talking about.

In my particular case, watching a movie, I realized that my cycles included or were especially related to certain domestic animals in different moments of my great life cycle. A specific animal predominated in some of those cycles: dogs, goats (goat), horses and cats as far as I am concerned, maybe for someone else it will be other animals or insects that have predominated, as I said that varies according to the person in question.

By way of synthesis, starting with my childhood in it the dog predominated, I had several of them, the most beloved died in an atrocious way to say a word that describes the fact. The poor thing got a wound trying to get out of his cage and for not taking him to the vet - my parents did absolutely nothing - the wound got infected and my dog died. I always blamed myself for that event, because even though I was a child, I could have sought help from other people and maybe the dog would have been saved. I suffered and mourned his death a lot, and for a long time I was accompanied by a feeling of guilt. Watching him die was horrible, those who feel special affection for their pets know what I am talking about.

Another animal that was very present in my childhood was the goat, especially in the menu we ate. My paternal family is from an area of the country where the diet contains various dishes based on the tasty little animal. Once, when I was about eight years old, I witnessed how they slaughtered a goat and it was traumatic. I had a long time without eating goat, but in the end hunger got the better of me. By the way, in the Chinese zodiac I belong to the sign of the goat.

The influence or closeness of those animals did not change in adolescence since those same animals mentioned predominated. Things changed when I got married and moved to a different geographical area, because then horses and birds came to dominate. The place in question was rural and there were all kinds of animals, but because of their unique characteristics I focused my attention on those two. There was an amazing variety of birds, and many people moved around on horses, mules and donkeys.

When I moved back to my hometown, because I changed my place of work and unfortunately I got divorced, the animals that have predominated the most are the cat and a bird that even in the rural area I did not see too much, the hummingbird. What special meaning they have today or what influence they had on me in the past, I could not say exactly. I am of the Scorpio sign and although I do not consider myself a follower, fanatic or scholar of astrology, in many cases I am right about the characteristics of many of the people around me and myself.

Ancestral knowledge is a source of wisdom that we should not underestimate. All the ancient medicine and herbalism have been the basis of modern pharmaceutics, and in my particular opinion with all its science it does not surpass the ancient.

The archaics were right in affirming that individuals, families and even peoples have a totem, since there are not only animals that define us and attract us in particular, but we also attract them by our particular vibration in certain moments of our life. The mystery of life continues its course, without our being able to unravel it, and perhaps it is better that it remains that way.

Es en realidad extraño, a veces solo es necesario mirar bien a tu alrededor y te percataras de cosas que antes habían pasado inadvertidas. Nos empeñamos en ver la vida como una línea recta, un hilo, un principio que tendrá un final. Cuando ya debiéramos reconocer que más bien nos movemos en sinuosidades, ciclos horizontales y verticales dependiendo de la dimensión espiritual, corporal, mental o existencial de la persona de quien hablemos.

En mi caso particular, viendo una película, caí en cuenta que mis ciclos incluían o se relacionaban en especial con ciertos animales domésticos en diferentes momentos de mi gran ciclo vital. Un animal en específico predominaba en algunos de esos ciclos: perros, cabras (chivo), caballos y gatos en lo que a mí respecta, quizá para otra persona serán otros los animales o insectos los que hayan predominado, como ya dije eso varía según la persona en cuestión.

A manera de síntesis, comenzando con mi niñez debo destacar que en ella predominó el perro, tuve varios de ellos, el más querido murió de una forma atroz por decir una palabra que describa tal hecho. El pobre se hizo una herida tratando de salir de su jaula y por no llevarlo al veterinario – mis padres no hicieron absolutamente nada- la herida se infectó y mi perro murió. Siempre me culpé de ese suceso, ya que a pesar de que era un niño, pude buscar ayuda con otras personas y quizá el perro se hubiera salvado. Sufrí y lloré mucho su muerte, y por mucho tiempo me acompañó un sentimiento de culpa. El ver como moría fue horrible, los que sienten cariño especial por sus mascotas saben de lo que hablo.

Otra animal que estuvo muy presente en mi niñez fue el chivo (cabra), sobre todo en el menú que ingeríamos. Mi familia paterna es de una zona del país donde la dieta contiene diversos platos a base del sabroso animalito. Una vez como a los ocho años de edad presencié como sacrificaban uno y fue traumático. Tuve bastante tiempo sin comer chivo, pero al final el hambre pudo más. Por cierto, en el zodíaco chino pertenezco al signo de la cabra.

La influencia o cercanía de esos animales no varió en la adolescencia ya que esos mismos animales mencionados predominaron. La cosa cambió cuando me casé y cambié de zona geográfica, porque entonces pasaron a dominar los caballos y las aves. El sitio en cuestión era rural y había toda clase de animales, pero por sus características singulares puse mi atención en esos dos. Había una variedad de aves sorprendentes, y mucha gente se desplazaba en caballos, mulas y burros.

Cuando volví a mudarme a mi ciudad natal, porque cambié de lugar de trabajo y lamentablemente me divorcié, los animales que más han predominado es el gato y un ave que ni siquiera en la zona rural vi demasiado, el colibrí. Que significado tienen e especial éstos en la actualidad o que influencia tuvieron en mí en el pasado, no lo sabría decir con exactitud. Soy del signo escorpio y aunque no me considero seguidor, fanático o estudioso de la astrología en muchos casos hay aciertos en cuanto a las características de muchas personas que me rodean y de mí mismo.

Los conocimientos ancestrales son una fuente de sabiduría que no debemos subestimar. Toda la medicina antigua y la herbolaria han sido la base de la farmacéutica moderna, y en mi opinión particular con toda su ciencia ésta no supera a la antigua.

Los arcaicos tenían razón en afirmar que los individuos, las familias y hasta los pueblos tienen un tótem, ya que no solo hay animales que nos definen y nos atraen en especial, sino que nosotros también los atraemos a ellos por nuestra vibración particular en determinado momentos de nuestra vida. El misterio de la vida sigue su curso, sin que lo podamos desentrañar y quizá es mejor que siga así.
