What is the Stickiness Factor to Hive?

Hive exists in one of the most interesting ways in the crypto industry. When you know Hive -as we all do - you know it to be a thriving ecosystem of dApps and a hardcore community of diehard users.

When you look from the outside, Hive appears to be a tiny player in a tiny industry called crypto.

That being said, our technology is far better than other chains. Our use cases are far more developed. Our community is far more die hard.

So why isn't Hive growing more rapidly? Why don't we see new people onboarded regularly? Why don't we see people sticking around.

I believe there are a lot of varying answers to these questions, depending on how one chooses to approach it. Today, we'll focus on the stickiness factor.

What is the Stickiness Factor to Hive?

In any social media platform, there is a stickiness factor. The challenge is not only getting people to sign up and join your dApp, but also getting them to stick around.

For social platforms, we can sit and wonder: what would keep a user coming back each day.

This brings us to another question: What brings you back every single day?

  • How long have you been on Hive?
  • How did you find Hive?
  • Why did you join Hive?
  • Which dApps do you use each day?
  • What makes you keep coming back to Hive?

I would love to see the answers to these questions. Let's take a quick poll of the Hive community - answer the above 5 questions in as much detail as you wish to provide by commenting beneath this post.

Behind these 5 questions and answers, I believe a lot can be learned about how we can grow Hive.

Afterall, the best place to start marketing is to the existing demographic. We take the demographic that is on Hive today and extrapolate to other platforms. We look for other members of the same demo and try to onboard them.

What is the Stickiness Factor to Leo?

Obviously, our team has been slaving away at building The Everything App. We believe we're onto something big with the new app.

It went live on May 1st of this year. It's been just over 60 days since the app went live and it's wild to see how far we've come in a short period of time.

That's crypto for ya. Everything moves so fast.

Lately, we've been putting a lot of effort into marketing and growth. You can read our latest Growth Report Here where we talk about the growth we've seen and the growth we are chasing.

We have 3x'd the size of LeoFinance in the past year. That's pretty wild to think about.

We are currently at 1,100 MAUs and our goal is to hit 5,000 MAUs by December 2023. This is a huge target for us and considering the current size of Hive, we have our work cut out for us.

We'll need to onboard thousands of non-Hivers to the LeoFinance UI. This is not an easy task. It's a problem that the Hive community has been trying to solve since literally day on of this ecosystem.

That being said, the stickiness factor becomes an ever-important question.

How do we get people here and how do we get them to stay?

What makes people want to come back each day?

I want to see responses in the comments but I will elude to the broader picture that I see and have experienced first hand.

The world is moving ever-toward Finance. We are seeing the financialization of everything simultaneous to seeing the digitization of everything.

The culmination of these things is where the idea for LeoFinance was born.

In my opinion, one of the sticky reasons that people come to Hive/Leo is around money. People are gladdened to see a few bucks hit their wallet after making a post. People love to see some earnings, no matter how small.

I believe this lies at the heart of the initial sticky factor.

We come for the money.

But why do we stay? I don't think it's only for the money. I think the Money is good on Hive but it isn't great.

I believe that Money always plays a role but that there is something bigger here. The community on Hive is a family and that is a major reason to stay. We build relationships here while simultaneously earning some small $$ for our efforts and we have the promise of potentially bigger $$ in the future.

These 3 things play a key role in stickiness for Hive users IMO:

  1. Earning some $$
  2. Making relationships
  3. The promise of bigger $$ earnings in the future

What are your thoughts? Don't forget to leave a comment below with the 5 questions and your answers. Let's poll the community and try to figure out how we can onboard the next generation of Hivers:

  • How long have you been on Hive?
  • How did you find Hive?
  • Why did you join Hive?
  • Which dApps do you use each day?
  • What makes you keep coming back to Hive?

When you look from the outside, Hive appears to be a tiny player in a tiny industry called crypto.

Lol, Hive is visible from the outside?

I've been on Hive since 2016, when it was Steem. I found it while looking for a facebook alt, for all the reasons everyone hates Facebook, but particularly for their arbitrary banning policy. I joined because I had been watching BTC for about 3 years and knew there was something to crypto, in general, but the concept of using it as a reward system for social media was too revolutionary to dismiss out of hand, so I started dipping in and trying it out.

I didn't really make any money, or come up with any amazing ideas to take advantage so I found it difficult to hang out here in the beginning.

Then I found Splinterlands (Steem Monsters at the time), and it further drove the point home of what a crypto reward system for daily activities could do, so I was hooked.

Daily, I use peakd, hive-engine, beeswap, peakmonsters, Splinterlands, of course, dCrops, and I'm trying to spend more time in the Leo-verse, but I don't have much to contribute here, so I'm still a tourist.

Simply put, I keep coming back because I'm invested. Not just financially, but in the belief this tech really is a key component in some of the major changes that are unfolding before humanity's eyes.

Speaking of invested... Hive is where I learned how to invest. I was dabbling with BTC, but I knew nothing of markets, investing, ROI, APR/APY, or even how networks work, really, before I dove in here and began seeing how it all interconnects.

Honestly, it may be a bit dramatic, but Hive is my home, office, church university, and nightclub. Whatever I'm in the mood for I can find here, so why borrow an account from facebook to get slapped in the face with someone else's curated garbage.

I own my Hive account, decide what makes it on to my feed, and get paid for my participation. Nothing else comes close, and that's just the social media factor. I bank here, too. Would you trust facebook with your money? I should hope not.

How long have you been on Hive?

I have been around since July 2017

How did you find Hive?

I came across STEEM as blockchain social media while doing cryptocurrency research. I checked out the project and it seemed worth checking out and making an account.

Why did you join Hive?

Originally I wanted to see how a blockchain social media would work and and I soon realized that it is the best large scale community I had ever come across. There were many smart people who I can have a real connection without even knowing their real names.

Which dApps do you use each day?

Frond Ends: @leofinance @ecency @peakd @dbuzz
Games: @splinterlands @risingstargame
DeFi: HIVE-Engine + Tribaldex

What makes you keep coming back to Hive?

  • Community + Knowledge shared (which I believe to be better than an expensive paid subscription)
  • Games
  • Easy to use feeless blockchain + DAPSS
  • I like writing and sharing content
  • I want to support great projects that can change the world for the better
  • Earning $HIVE $HBD $LEO etc.

This is a realistic piece....with all sincerity, hive has been just more than a blogging site.

I've been here for the past 8 months

Actually we joined as a team who migrated from #steemit under the the leadership of @fokuznow with other amazing souls as @ijelady, @luchyl, @sammyhive and many others

Our aim for the move was seeking better opportunities, of course web 3 is much better than web 2

I've used dAPPS as @ecency, @dbuzz, @hiveengine, @leofinance etc

I've kept coming not because of the earnings, going through my blog, one can actually testify that I'm not getting so much, but I think I've learnt a lot, I've made friends across the globe... people like @taskmaster4450le, @mattsanthonyit, @freewritehouse 🤣🤣🤣
I'm moving ever forward with hive

Which dApps do you use each day? LeoFinance, Peakd, LikeTu at least.

What makes you keep coming back to Hive? Mainly I see the potental of Hive. Where it should be in 10 years.

How long have you been on Hive?
4 years with this account.

How did you find Hive?
I was introduced by an influencer on an other social media plattform

Why did you join Hive?
I found (and still find) it interesting to whatch a new economy forming. the major issue of "The internet" had always been the lack of a cheap and secure value transfer. Paying cents for reading an article by only a click. We see an extrem evolution of this concept with the reward pool distribution and all the things that are possible here.

Which dApps do you use each day?
PeakD, Leo Threads, Ecency

What makes you keep coming back to Hive?
It is my main source of information about crypto and new projects. With @spinvest I found a community of equal minded people. The rewards are more of a motivation than of an income source at all. I never exchanged any crypto back to fiat.

Thanky for the questions!

How long have you been on Hive?

I'm here four (4) months now.

How did you find Hive?

A very good friend introduced me to Hive

Why did you join Hive?

  • First, I need to release my thoughts each day through creating contents so Hive was the best place to do that.

  • I also needed another source of income and Hive proved to be the best place.
Making friends is what I like doing and I've gained that here.

  • Learning never ends and Hive has proven a good place to learn so many things stemming from crypto, other country's culture and food, etc.

  • One day, one will need to retire from work or business and fall back on his or her savings, so I saw Hive as a better place to save for my retirement.

Which dApps do you use each day?
I use LeoFinance, Ecency, Hive frontends and just got signed up on Peakd.com today.

What makes you keep coming back to Hive?

I see Hive as a second home and as such like to interact with the people I call family.

To share my content and engage with other user's contents too

To earn and save more for my future retirement.

How long have you been on Hive?

I have been on Hive since 2018. So a total of 5 years

How did you find Hive?

I got to know about Hive through a friend in uni

Why did you join Hive?

Well, I needed some extra income and I loved writing, so Hive was the perfect opportunity for me.

Which dApps do you use each day?

Right now, it is leothreads. I spend roughly 4-8 hours on the app each day. It is fun and I get to talk to a lot of people.

What makes you keep coming back to Hive?

The money. Creating content on Hive adds to income. It is better than working a minimum-age job and I love the freedom it gives me to explore other creative endeavors.

Also, I have other projects and communities I support. Hive gives me the unique opportunity to service my community and help other younger people from my demographic earn and grow.

Lastly, my stake. I want to see that grow in value as well. It's one of my few tickets to financial freedom. So that's another incentive to stay and build here.

On and off, I've been on Hive for around 5 years now.

I found Hive (actually Steem) while searching for ways to make money online. I was spending a lot of time on the internet, so I figured why not monetize all that time rather than let it go to waste?

I joined Hive to try and make some money online. Back then, I had no idea about the huge potential of Hive so I wasn't even looking to make a lot of money. All I wanted was some extra bucks to buy a couple of beers every now and then but as I started to get more and more involved in Hive, I learned it was much more than a social network where you can make some money from your content.

The dapps I uses the most are LeoFinance, Risng Star and Splinterlands.

I keep coming back to Hive because I learn a lot about many topics interacting with people in the community. Also, I do believe Hive has immense potential to lead the next technological and social revolution and I want to make sure I'm involved.

This is something I am always interested in giving answers to. It's a pity not many people know about Hive and even those who know and have signed up aren't active again. Why? Let me give my answers to get the "Why".

How long have you been on Hive?

I have been on Hive for 2 years and almost 4 months now.

How did you find Hive?

There was a platform I joined three years ago which crashed in the year 2020. I was on another platform when @dreemsteem told us about Hive. I was reluctant at first because I was told it's just like Steemit because I was a user there in the year 2016 when I spent a year and left. After all, it was hard to earn. I was there for the money alone. Then, Hive came and concluded it would be hard too. After a year, I had a rethink and joined. Sincerely, I was here for the money at first but along the line, I saw the potential in Hive and changed my mentality to start building myself and account while learning the hang of investment.

Why did you join Hive?

Just like I said, I did join for the money but today, whether money or not, I have found a great and quality relationship that I don't plan to ruin or put an end to.

Which dApps do you use each day?

Every day, I use Ecency to post and comment. I also use Leofinance to engage in the community. Then, peakd is just to view my Hive Engine wallets and trade other tokens.

What makes you keep coming back to Hive?

Hive has been a home to me. I can't go a day without coming here, especially coming to see how my account is doing. I keep coming back because it's already part of me. I took Hive as a job where I resume for the day and close at night. I enjoy the social interaction, engagement and fun of improving daily mere looking at others' works. Now, back to the "why" I started with, it is being intentional that makes one keep coming back. People don't want to do more work but expect large returns which is impossible. They aren't ready to put in extra effort and because they keep getting little cent, they assume it is small to waste their time here. Trust me, if one is intentional about growth here on Hive, they would keep coming back here to make it happen.

Thanks for bringing out these questions.

I have been on hive for 8 months now

I never knew what is Hive until @fokusnow told me about Hive

He said that, it is a web3 Blockchain, much more better than web2 where we was.

I love opportunity so I needed to more from him. And I left my city to his one city to learn about Hive. After the training, I went back to my city to share to my people all the things I heard about Hive.

I come to hive each day because I will not afford to miss good friends I have here on Hive and LeoFinace. Honestly, hive has become a second home for me. Whenever am facing challenges, I come to hive to seek comfort and many friends will wish me well.
Hive, I love you so much

  1. I joined steemit in 2018. From there i came over to Hive briefly and went back to steemit. That 2018 was my year of joining crypto too. I returned fully and finally to Hive November 2022. I Actually came over with close to 25 friends including @ijelady, @sammyhive, @beauty197, @marajah, @herculeand, @pearlie123, @ijebest, @ngobaby, @iamchimary, @mr-chuks, @iamnursejeff, @samueluche07, and others that remained active till date. Unfortunately more than half of my friends that came over from Steemit lost interest.

  2. I heard about Hive from Steemit. A lot was not really clear to me then as a newbie. But am happy i got to know about Hove then from steemit.

  3. Hive was clearly doing much better than steem especially with regards to promoting free speech and removing censorship. Dapps, communities, projects and teams like Leo team drew me to Hive.

  4. Mostly Leo threads and Leofinace.io. I use Hive keychain for wallet, and ecency as a backup UI.

  5. I find value in Leofinance. I really appreciate this team. They are simply the best. If you check my blog, you will notice that 80% or more of my work is leofinance. With 18k LP, i have shown that the Leo team and project won my long-term commitment.

How long have you been on Hive?

Just a couple of months, 5 months to be exact.

How did you find Hive?

I stumbled upon Hive through researching about cryptocurrency and decentralization. The concept around it was pretty fascinating to me and I decided to dig down the rabbit hole.

Why did you join Hive?

Truthfully, the potential to earn was the main driving force on joining Hive. But I was also curious to know what web3 was about. What made it for me was reading the why Hive page on the hive.io website.

Which dApps do you use each day?

It's mostly ecency, peakd and leofinance.

What makes you keep coming back to Hive?

It's the vision and the potential the ecosystem has. The genuine relationships that I'm forming and the diverse and valuable knowledge that users share here. I've also become a bit addicted to the gamification, growing my stake, building reputation, achieving X amount of activity, climbing up the ranks etc.

Well Leo has been consistently at the core of Hive and its such a community that keeps the heartbeat on regardless of many crisis.

Diverse and multi-talented authors here on Leofinance are showing their ideas and the forum is solid - thats what have contributed to "stickiness" factor tbh..

I would of course want to see more growth and the community to shine and prosper.

As you mentioned; I think the main attraction to HIVE is the potential of earning currency. Which leads me to the following. I'm sure there are many reasons why some leave the platform but I would wager that a good portion of those leaving/ not sticking around long enough to find a niche boils down to human nature. Newbies sign up expecting to earn dollars but soon find out that most post make cents. They review the trending content/higher paying content and determine that their own content is of higher quality writing and can't figure out why they are earning less than the trending posts. They then toss their hands in the air and say "I'm Out" due to wrongly feeling "this is a scam", "this isn't worth my time (but then goes back to posting on facebook)" and/or "I guess no-one wants to read my content (Feels as if they failed at creating a blog)". A greater success of user retention likely can be found on marketing to the "FUN" aspect instead of the "Rewards" aspect. Ex. Those who signup as gamers to play Splinterlands and later transition to/ explore other aspects of the blockchain are lmore likely to be content with smaller rewards/ stick around long enough to find their niche.

Splinterlands, LeoFinance, PeakD, ecency, SoMee, HiveBlocks, HiveNow, HiveStats, ListNerds, LeoDex, and sometimes LeoGlossary. Just recently, ThreeSpeak

What makes you keep coming back to Hive?

The idea of micro earnings and micro investing and also the idea of Hive as a compounding machine via layer two tokens. If everything turns out right as I expected about Hive, saving for my retirement years.

How long have you been on Hive?

Since January 2018.

How did you find Hive?

Through Jon Olson, who seemed really passionate about it.

Why did you join Hive?

To check it out and see if I like it.

Which dApps do you use each day?

Are we allowed to say Keychain? That seems like cheating! :D

Leofinance, PeakD, BeeSwap/TribalDex (sometimes not every day), Splinterlands and a series of 4-5 idle games, CTPX, Listnerds, SplinterForge. Indirectly I use 3Speak every day because I watch/listen to videos, but without logging in to the platform. Every few days: PeakMonsters and/or Splex.gg. I'm sure there are others I don't remember right now. There are definitely others I use on a weekly or monthly basis or on occasions.

What makes you keep coming back to Hive?

Many things.

The relationships we've built. I believe they are tighter than on other social media platforms because we needed to stick together more than they do in order to get through the bad times or the reality of being mostly ignored outside our ecosystem.

The almost certainty that we can build up our voice in the community and that it matters and cannot be taken away, at least at the base layer. By voice I obviously mean both words and stake-weighted influence.

The satisfaction of being involved in something that may shaken the status quo, if it hasn't already started doing that.

The incentives, ok, that's a factor too. In time, they can build up to become a serious alternative or at least complement the earnings from the fiat world. I'd prefer the first option, but time will tell.
